Illinois Governor: Fill Contraception scripts
kbordson replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
Thank you... but I truly wasn't trying to fish for a compliment. I was just defending those with a varying perspective than yours. This is an interesting situation and can be an enlightening debate. But, it needs to stay open to discussion... to do so, then the typical speakers corner responses of "us against them" have to be checked. I think you have some valid points, but I still don't think that I would subject the patient to paying out of pocket by going to another pharmacy or refusing to fill/forward her script. Espcially since it might have been written for dysfunctional uterine bleeding, or maybe she gets severe migraine with menses and by being on the OCP, she's released from that pain. As stated by others, birth control pills aren't just for birth control. The pharmacist IS entitled to his beliefs. And I don't want to discount his morals, but he also chose to be a pharmacist - and as such he needs to take care of the patient or refer her to someone that can... it truly sounds like he did neither. So for the sake of his religious beliefs, he forgot about the patient needs. She is the important one in that relationship. So, anyway - back to the debate Karen -
I lurked from Peru.... didn't post there, cuz the computer was a bit too slow, but definately checked it out once or twice from the internet cafes. But, it was only after the clinics were closed and before the dinner stuffs were started (most everyone else was napping to prep for the playing hard at night... but who needs naps... sleep was overrated) Karen

Ya know, though... it's better to be pissed off.... (so I've heard) edit cuz of stoopid spelling.

Untrue statement. Firstly, I, and probably many with my opinion, are not necessarily "leftist" in thinking nor "anti-life." I just expect the pharmacist to fill the prescriptions that are written for the patients, without harassing them or interjecting their personal belief structure onto them. It is completely wrong to force another person to bide by your beliefs. We all have our thoughts on life/death and spirituality, it's not his place as a PHARMACIST to try to influence their religious beliefs. Karen -
Welcome Back! Hope that your trip was fun and exciting. Any stories to tell?

Understood.... but still just wanted to say but, now, it seems that I've successfully hijacked your thread.... so back to the regularly scheduled posts by Non Americans.

(long heavy sign) Yes.... but I wouldn't trade the pain for a moment. With those dear to the heart, you don't count the cost.

1) The customer has a choice to go to another pharmacist to get their prescription. True, except that the insurance plan might only specificy certain pharmacies. Then if they go somewhere else, it's an out of pocket expense due to someone elses religious beliefs... not a good option, especially if the patient has limited funds to begin with. 2) If the government can force a pharmacist to do something against their moral values, what about a doctor? Will Catholics doctors be directed by the gov't to perform abortions next? The govenrnment can not force him to do something against his moral values, he has the right to quit, to get a job in line more with his values. Saying that he is being forced is like saying that a doctor working in an abortion clinic is being forced to do the D&C's if it's against his/her beliefs, as in your second comment. Again a false statement. If it's against your code of ethics and you're in private practice, you can remove yourself from that after you've found her a referral that would be appropriate. But if you work in an abortion clinic, you can't then claim religious exception. If it's against your morals, don't work there. 3) If the gov't can force pharmacy to carry drugs that are contradictory to the beliefs of its owners, will it next force hospitals to perform procedures contradictory to the beliefs of its owners/sponsors? St. Josephs Abortion Clinic - here at the behest of YOUR government? Again, you're confusing private owned companies/practices/hospitals with corporations. I believe that there is difference. If you are a major pharmacy, and take many insurance plans, you should be responsilbe to fill all perscriptions covered on the formulary of the different plans. Maybe not have all of them in stock, but they should be able to be ordered and available to your patients. (note: if there are any pharmacist out there, please correct me if I'm mis-speaking) 4) Will 'Are you Christian?' become a mandatory question for pharmacists desiring to work at chain pharmacies out of fear of lawsuits? Will that be a discriminating factor in the hiring process? I don't think that question should be necessary. I think that the beliefs that you hold should not infringe on the beliefs of other people, especially patients. You can be a Jehova's Witness and have your thoughts on recieving blood products, but if your patient bleeds out and dies because it was against your "moral code" to give a blood transfusion - it's wrong. I think each person is entitled to his/her perceptions on life/spirituality and happiness.... as their pharmacist, what would give you the right to say "birth control pills are evil" -

Interesting post... and potentional for discussion. Vinny, I agree with your statements, but there has to be some difference between a large commercial pharmacy (Osco, Walmart...ect) and the small corner store pharmacies. If you go to the small local one, that might not carry too much in stock besides the monthly meds for the local customer, then it might be better to go to the larger one. But... if you're going to Osco (and remember, that insurance sometimes dictates where you get meds filled), you should be able to get the meds that the doctor did write for. Should there be room for dissent? Of course. Sometimes the dr might not be writing for the best option and calling them and educating them is fine, or maybe the wrong dose is written.... but if it's a matter of morals and the large chain pharmacy commonly has rx's for OCP.... I think that pharmacist needs to put aside his reservations or find a job in a location that is better suited for his spirit. Karen -
Just finishin' here too. Looks like a beautiful day here too! Maybe get a nap first and then dancing in the sky

No... actually not only is my glass half full, but I'll be happy to share it with anyone that's thirsty. I was just saying that it's not nice to just post a Non-American poll about whether America sucks or not. Especially since I didn't see a similiar one for Peru, UK, China or Australia. Seemed a bit as if you either had an axe to grind or you just wanted to complain about something. (but I guess this is Speakers Corner) p.s. not trying to be a mean argumentative, just teasing you and being snotty.... you're a bit too cute to try to piss off.
-
So... ummmm. Why the anti-American sentiment? Did some one piss in your Cheerios this morning, or are you hurt that your application for a mail order husband got rejected? Seriously though - not nice to just bag on someones homeland for shits and giggles.... I know you might have been placing that tongue in cheek, but still, not nice. Karen

Chelle, Sorry for your pain. It sounds like you loved him, and even with the pain of this rejection, the growth that you had while loving him is still worth the sorrow. With each person that you allow deeper to your heart, you grow and learn from - not just about him/her but also about you. Your dreams, desires, percetions of life all change with the new view that person might bring. It might mean that your heart will get broke and the time to heal might feel like forever, but it truly is better to have a scarred mended heart than to have a perfectly smooth unmarred and unfeeling heart. Take this time to cry, to question and to be angry. Yell at the moon, drink a shot or two, but let the sun rise and fall... with time the wounds do heal. {{{hugs}}} Karen

How about statuatory rape? More than enough cases to back that argument up.

I grew up in a strong military type family. My dad had just retired from the AF when I was born. He taught us a lot of respect for the military. Since he had three daughters (and no son's), I was the one most likely to not get kicked out of the service, so he started early to encourage a military future (Civil Air Patrol at 16, starting paperwork for ROTC scholarships....) Tried the academies (Navy wouldn't touch me with a history of a double skull fracture, and there was some serious service issues that my father had with the Army... so that left the AF) - got on the waiting list for the Air Force Academy, but was offered a full ride scholarship in ROTC at home.... took the bird in the hand and accepted the scholarship. Greatly appreciate the experience I had and would definately do it again. Got out to go to medical school. Might go back in... depends on what they do with TriCare (try-to-care). Currently, my stepson is stationed at my base. (new day and age - sons go into the squadrons of their stepmothers)

Your misunderstanding or refusing to open your eyes to the differences that others may have..... It's honestly not that I'm suicidal or "ego driven".... it's my belief set. As I'm leaving in a few short hours, I don't have time to restate my thoughts, so I'll just let you assume that you know my psyche diagnosis. But.... just enjoy it all. Karen

Expensive?! It's bistromathics, money doesn't really matter.... and the mods can just erase the bill anyway. (after they stop being dead, of course)

There are others ... like famous rock stars that have taken a year off as dead for tax purposes. It's a done thing.

Don't hurt yourself there... thinking is a dangerous pasttime.

Is not really good at self defense if a simple lil girl could steal something from him that easily (damn... missed it again!)
