45,000 americans die every year due to lack of health insurance
kbordson replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
Because it's NOT required by my occupation, nor do I wish that my profession be taken over by government control. And... for the record, my birth certificate (or certificate of live birth) would not give an "o" in bold face or plain type. As the name given to me at birth had no "o" in it at all. -

Is the o in bolface like that on your birth certificate certificate of live birth, also? what is a bolface? -

Do you believe that each individual taxpayer should have the right to choose whether or not to contribute funding for the military? Why or why not? And that was my piont, kbordsen must have missed it and directed to the brave troops no one claims are part of any fault here. you've quoted me enough, so get it right... it's Bordson And as far as you refusing to see the analogy, let me make that easier. Once things are controlled by the government (whether it's the military or health care), you, as a person, LOSE control -

Do you believe that each individual taxpayer should have the right to choose whether or not to contribute funding for the military? Why or why not? To contribute - probably should NOT be a choice. BUT I do feel that we, as the contributing source should have more control over the "services" that the military does provide. But, we don't. We, the people, seem to have minimal control over where the forces are sent. So, one could parallel that if the medical field were converted to such a "service"... the concern is that We, the people would have minimal control over those services as well. - but back to the military, I feel that it should be significantly down sized. (knowing that if that were to happen, it could significantly impact my husbands business) But "we" spend too much money and manpower on "protecting our way of life" by interfering with others ways of life. -

Or It's a service that is provided as protection for the people of a country by a smaller portion of the populous. Those volunteers are willing to sacrifice even their life if necessary for that cause. In return, those members are given minimal compensation for that willing sacrifice... and still people complain about what they do and demonize them for that service. And you desire the medical providers sacrifice as the soldiers have? -
Have a HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! If there is truly a thing called Karma, you will have a great life - celebrate this anniversary of it's beginning!

Oh, like the military? If the American population is willing to give up that control that military member have given up to get that service, then sure. HAVING BEEN A MILITARY SERVICE MEMBER, it was fair enough health care (but Tricare SUCKED). In exchange, I was on mobility, did TDY away from my husband and accepted a risk of death for the sake of my country. -

So does that mean all the other countries have people that don't want to take responsibility for themselves? Actually, yes. It infers that the people are willing to allow the government to provide it and accept the government control in exchange for a "free" service. I would rather pay and control my own services. Others feel that way as well. BUT I realize that others do NOT feel that way or are incapable of paying for what they want/need and are willing to accept (and some demand) that someone else provide. -

Counselor, you are a wise man. As far as the peds - THEY cause disease! Have you ever seen a pediatrics clinic?! All those mobile petri dishes! Leaking all over the place! No biohazard labels on those lil infectious sources! Transmitting bacterial and viral agents. It's the fault of the pediatric clinics that there is so much infectious disease in this country! AND... Pediatrics practices HORRIBLE age discrimination. Try going to your local peds guy when you're 45! That should be illegal. They shouldn't be able to refuse treatment to you just because you're older!!! - and christelsabine - The U.S. shouldn't do it either. I've been rather consistent with that opinion. -

this would be better phrased 'some believe that all citizens should have healthcare even the poorest and the sickest' No. I think I worded my thoughts correctly. But you can word yours how you see it and THATS OK. See. That is EXACTLY my point. my words are more honest - if that is your point There are none so blind than those that refuse to see. i already have a national health service - and it has served me and my family well - as well as the poorest and the sickest. So why do you get all hot and bothered about a country that isn't yours? Why try to impose your beliefs on a completely different population? Why are you trying to be Big Brother and tell the U.S. what to do? We kicked you out of our lives once.... don't be surprised if we don't want to come back. -

What's the best way to resolve that conflict? Marg I think it will take more of a philosophical compromise on the part of both camps. It will take a REASONABLE discussion trying to understand the goals of the people of the United States. There will always be those stubborn ones that REFUSE to listen.... on both sides. But, this IS NOT going to make or break the U.S. Personally... I just don't want the government to be looking into my patients (or my) private records. And I want my patients to trust that I have HIS or HER best interest in mind... not that of a government mandate. I have had A LOT of experience with Medicaid the past 7 years. I'm tired of that frustration... and NOW they want to make ALL health care like that? What frustrated me? -Medications. I can't give hyperemesis patients Zofran. Only phenergan. WHY? Zofran is better, less side effects. COST. I felt there were more limitations on what I could offer the medicaid patients than my regular insurance or private pay patients. -Referrals. Patient with carpal tunnel in the third trimester. Getting her set up with a referral BEFORE SHE DELIVERS is QUITE challenging. My nurse would spend HOURS pulling favors. - Entitled attitudes. Not all of my patients acted this way. In fact, only a small minority, but it was irritating to hear "You HAVE to take care of me." No... I don't HAVE to do anything of the sort. I had selected this population because I WANTED to give back. It's my CHOICE. BUT I do understand the NEED. AND... I am willing to accept some compromise in my core belief. but... it will be a compromise. -

Really. Why is that? Because people have limited imaginations. Whatever they "think" is the worst disaster, will be proven wrong by a bigger one; sometimes caused by something insignificant they never imagined would have caused one. I might have a limited imagination, but for what has been considered, we are fairly well covered. Granted, I don't have any good anesthetic, but I have the skills and supplies to cover most minor surgeries. We have the ability to be self sufficient for a period of at least a month. And we have the proper defenses to ensure that no one will compromise our safety. So... I would say... I'm fairly ready. WOLVERINES!!! (actually... Being a Wisconsin girl and not a Michigan girl... I should probably change that to BADGERS!!!!! but it doesn't go as well with the reference to the obscure 80's movie that is being remade and pertinent to the topic.)

45,000 americans die every year due to lack of health insurance
kbordson replied to riddler's topic in Speakers Corner
True statement, but I thought I would make it a little less .... harsh. Everyone has personal beliefs. Some belief that they deserve "free" health care as a "right." Others belief that they don't want to be "burdened" by the expense created by others choices - obesity, smoking, skydiving, driving cars, high school sports - and believe in their right to independence which comes with personal responsibility. When there's a sharp conflict in beliefs, then one camp usually views the others as "fools"... when, in reality, it's just a difference of views. Neither side is "wrong" and both are valid... but they are in conflict. -
I don't think that situation is too very uncommon. My situation - I'm more educated. You could probably describe that as "book smart," but it doesn't mean that I don't have the ability to apply that knowledge or have common sense. He's more mechanically minded. I am often amazed by what he "sees" when he looks at a chunk of 4140 steel . . . not quite like Tony Starks - but only cuz he doesn't have the cool suit of armor. . . . yet. I don't think either is "smarter," although neither of us have technically been tested.

Can you identify each of these firearms?
kbordson replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Darn. I can't open these files at work. (or at least I "shouldn't." I bet that I "can." But that would be quite frowned on) Maybe once this night "ends". . . if this night "ends". . . . -
WTF. "flee to avoid it"?! What it might do is limit my willingness to freely give to that population. I currently give money out of pocket for some of my "self pay" patients medicines. If the government (which I read as "ME through mandate") provides it, then I have less guilt and personal commitment to personally donate my time and effort.

Health Care Policy and the Village Idiots
kbordson replied to funjumper101's topic in Speakers Corner
OK. What does this post have to do with health care? To me (a recovering Catholic that does believe in evolution and genetic mutation/diversity): This post and many posts in this thread are just rantings of those that are willing to discriminate against others based on their religious beliefs. I had an ancestor hanged on Gallows Hill... I think I know something about witch hunts. -

Exactly. Do not get tricked into confusing correlation with causation. I'd bet there is also positive corelations between unisured and many other things, as well as dieing from certain causes and many other things. There is also context and scale to consider. I believe that is also roughly the number of annual traffic fatalities. I'm not saying it isn't worthy of discussion, just that it won't convince everybody (and alone should not convince anybody) that we should jump to a trillion dollar deficit in what could be a vain attempt to change things. Agreed. I have seen patients WITH health insurance get cervical cancer and patients WITHOUT health insurance get cervical cancer. I have even seen patients in a country WITH NATIONAL HEALTH CARE get cervical cancer. With early detection, you CAN treat and limit the progression... but even WITHOUT insurance, screening is still available at local health departments and Free paps are available in every state. But you still have to go and be seen. Patrick Swazye got Pancreatic Cancer. Still, even with insurance, even with money.... Correlation does NOT imply causation. Would it be easier if the government provided health insurance? Of course. Would it increase screening, most likely. But even with that... there WILL be deaths. Not having insurance did NOT kill those Americans. What does not having insurance do? Can decrease routine visits and limit screening. Can prolong time to presentation for care. Can decreases patient perception of power/autonomy. But... it's NOT guaranteed to do any of those. -
BSBD. Pancreatic Cancer is horrid. He fought a tough battle. I hope he enjoyed the experience of life.

Americans Buy Over One Million Guns In August

.... Is there some correlation between being outside the US and being rude and an instigator? ROFLMAO Being rude? Where? What I said is just obvious. Being an instigator? What a BS. We're not living in 3rd Reich anymore. Give your guys a better education and less guns. That might help a lot more. I'm sure about that. Edited for typo ok... that's rather funny. -
Oh... I know it's too Disney. And even I have a lot of growth to do... but it's still A solution. Just not really a viable solution.

Tom Cruise never did it for me, either. But, he did for a lot of girls, Shah. I'm sure there's nothing you can't do in a racecar. *sigh* Volley Ball scene..... *sigh* Sorry, I got distracted. Why did he have to go so "crazy" by attacking Brooke Shields and post partum depression.

This is WAY OUT THERE... and would NEVER happen.... but I am sincere when I say it. We all grow up. We are ALL HUMANS. Not "Americans" or "yanks" or "seppos." Not "British" or "Limeys." Not "German" or "krauts." Not black or white or yellow. Not "Northerners" or "Southerners." Not "Yuppers" or "FIBS" or "Valley Girls" or "Jersey Girls" We realize that we call all think differently and THAT'S OK. We all WORK for our future and not worry about what the Jones'es might or might not have. We all understand that everyone is truly just trying to make it through this life on this planet. We ALL grow up. Illegal immigration and the work force - does it "hurt" Americans? Yes and no. Yes, it does limit the available jobs that can be offered to "legal" workers. No, work is still being done for the American society. Turn it around - I might have been "legal" when I went on the medical mission to Peru, but I still did work that the local physicians could have done and gotten compensation for. But for the most part they were happy to be having help.
