so were all the kids in art class arrested too, or were their scissors under the legal limit for scissor lenght? this is total bullshit when i was a kid i'd always find stuff around the house that i thought was cool and just throw it in my back pack, no harm intended. Good point, and along those same lines most of these accidents are cause by people that are inexperienced in handling weapons. Like the people that don't own them, the ones that borrow them from a friend or rent one at a shooting range. A good example, if you look at the military, and where the training accidents involving firearms are concerned, the majority of them come from non combat-arms units, ie support units. Not to take anything away from those soldiers we need them and they are great at what they do, but they don't handle their weapons often enough to be as comfortable with them as the grunt in the infantry battalion who always has a weapon at his side. Quotebelieve it or not, some of them are fighting because the last guy who kicked their door in, handcuffed their mother, ransacked their house and interogated their father and brothers had an american flag on his shoulder... reply] I do agree with you in the sense that some of what we have done here has created some enemies, but we don't kick in ranom doors, we go into homes and mosques for a reason and it takes a lot of work, to make sure we don't invade the wrong home. sometimes that work sends us through the wrong door, and we do everything possible to make up for our mistake, including paying for damages, and helping clean up what mess we made History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. These people aren't fighting to defend their country, they aren't just killing americans, they are killing innocent civilians, on purpose, and attacking the iraqis who volunteer as police, to protect innocents from criminals, what kind of a fuckin hero is that. i haven't gone a day since i've been here without hearing a firefight in the distance from insurgents trying to take over police stations and attacking the iraqi national guard at their checkpoints and in their homes. they kill the families of iraqis that work for us, these poeple are trying to earn a living to support their family and they lose their family for doing so. these aren't freedom fighters, they are simply people who hate us because we are americans and are willing to take the lives of all those who hold the same beliefs. How is killing relief workers being a freedom fighter. we are here to help these people. U.S. army deserter seeking refugee status in Canada
GQ_jumper replied to IanHarrop's topic in Speakers Corner
If I remember right death is still the maximum punishment for desertion in time of war. And as nice as that would be to see there are too many people who would be opposed to that, so it would never fly. just like the soldier who tossed a grenade in his commanders tent at the beginning of the war, he could've been executed immedeatly on order by his commander, but with all the media attention that would have been impossible. Fears of Troops Spread Thin, Specter of the Draft
GQ_jumper replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
yeah screw the country that gives me all my freedoms, i don't owe them shit!!! that's a great attitude to have. About troops beign spread too thin though, trust me thats bullshit, there is an over abundance of troops in iraq, trust me. there won't be any draft, GW said so himself he doesn't want one. it might be a little easier if the people who VOLUNTEERED to serve would have the balls to live up to their commitment and not try and duck out of it when they are asked to do their job in a place outside of the US, what did the expect when they joined the military. I have to agree with you in that people in our sport have to learn things the hard way. That is the kind of personality with which our sport is filled with, and as much as I get along with people like that I hate seeing them do stupid things. Has anyone here seen this film yet? Was it just an incredible amount of hype going the extreme opposite of Moore? Or did someone actually try and use facts to debunk Moore's conspiracy theories? History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

It's ok to be diverse when it comes to what you are learning about as long as its not about the majority. for example, no one would complain if they were learning about Islam, or Taoism, but don't even mention christianity. black history is ok but if someone were to teach specifially on white history it would be racist. That's my take on it at least. History does not long entrust the care of freedom to the weak or the timid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower

Actually, once you leave an objective after it is cleared, it is no longer clear, unless you leave a security force on that objective. Unfortunately it seems as if this argument has reached a stalemate though, it's obvious that neither side is going to budge so might as well leave it up to the people really deciding his fate. >>I have never said that he is innocent simply because he is a marine>i have never heard anyone state that the objective was cleared, and you know what i don't need the news to tell me either way, it was apparent that the objective was not cleared when in the video people were still walking around with their weapons at the high ready. If the objective had already been cleared then they would have already found that the man was still alive.>So you would rather see our troops die because they didn't want to do something "questionable" to protect themselves. I'm sorry but even though i am sworn to uphold the principles of the geneva conventions, and fight by the values that we in the US believe in, my first loyalty is to my team, and I'll be damned if i'm going to let one of my teammates kids grow up without a father because i took the time to think "what would geneva do" before i acted to protect them.
-
So let me get this straight, just because the Marines have opened an investigation that means he is automatically guilty. I'm glad that there was an investigation started, that goes to show that the US is making an effort to uphold the articles of the geneva conventions. but that does not automatically mean that he is guilty. last time i checked we are in a country where one is presumed innocent until proven guilty. so give the man the benifit of the doubt in believing that he didn't wake up one morning saying to himself i'm gonna kill an innocent today, do you really think this man looked at the situation and said i'm gonna do the wrong thing, no, he did what he felt he had to. and i do understand that even though the terrorists don't fall under the protections of the geneva conventions we are still expected to act by them so don't even try and throw that one at me. But let me clear something up, just because someone doesn't meet the criteria of a legal combatant does not mean that we cannot kill them. read my previous post about hhostile noncombatants. regardless of what the geneva conventions states we are always givne the right to self defense. anyone is given that right on both sides, so if i feel my life is threatened i'm authorized the use of deadly force to protect it, while in a combat environment at least, and this is not just my opinion, it came directly from the mouth of a JAG officer who gave me a legal brief before a deployment. and let me state one last time that as you are clearing an objective you are authorized to shoot those presumed to be dead, to ensure you don't get hit from behind, as well as those who are pretending to be dead, for the same reason, once you cross the objective they become POW's. If you have something to add, say it, but if your sticking around simply to start fight we'll be better off without. Trent had an accurate definition that he found, whatever the source may have been i was just adding something else that he didn't mention. As you said before you have had more effect on the rules of warfare than i ever will, so i figured that would imply that you know that Trent was right. Just FYI, a wikipedia definiton of combatant... argue this till you're blue in the face, but here it is. A combatant (also referred to as an enemy combatant) is a soldier or guerrilla member who is waging war. Under the Geneva Conventions, persons waging war must have the following four characteristics to be protected by the laws of war: In uniform: Wear distinctive clothing making them recognizable as soldiers from a distance. Openly bearing arms: Carrying guns or small arms and not concealing them. Under officers: Obedient to a chain of command ending in a political leader or government. Fighting according to the laws of war: Not committing atrocities or crimes, not deliberately attacking civilians or engaging in terrorism. A combatant who has surrendered or been captured becomes a prisoner of war. Great post, but i would like to add that lawful combatants must also carry identification stating that they are lawful combatants, if you look a Military ID cards, they say Geneva Conventions card on the back(ours do at least). How many students do not continue to jump?
GQ_jumper replied to mazevedo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know a good number of people who have started and never finished even the student program. I couldn't give you any stats, but for reasons, i am guessing money is one of the big ones. me personally i made my first freefall and was hooked, and ended up digging into my retirement account in a desperate effort to make more jumps.
