I was out of the sport for 14 years after getting my A license and making a total of 57 jumps. I kept my USPA membership and license current so that was not an issue. I sat through the first jump class again just to refresh my mind on emergency procedures, then made one "recurrency" jump with an instructor in which all I had to do was a diving exit, get stable and stay relative to my instructor without grips, deploy at the correct altitude, and land. After that I was good to go. I was a tad nervous after 14 years off, but hell I get nervous after a few weeks off ;-) __ My mighty steed

How far will DZO go in insulting you?
ChrisL replied to matereti's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I dont intend insult with this, but the fact is if you ask a silly question you can expect a silly answer. You asked if you could bring your dogs to a DZ with a no dog policy. That falls firmly under the silly question category and you got a silly answer as a result. Its up to you whether or not you want to be offended by it. __ My mighty steed -

PhillyKev also went the way of the Dodo. Last he posted, he claimed someone on dz.com badmouthed him to his employer and he lost his job on account of it. Except for one or two ninja posts, never heard from him again. __ My mighty steed

I had 57 jumps and then took 14 years off before returning. I sat through the FJC again just to refresh, and then made an AFF style jump with an instructor to make sure I didnt wig out ;-) After that it was back in business. __ My mighty steed

Actually mushrooms are fungus, not mold. The point remains true though. No matter what they are, one thing they are not is food. Fungus = not food mold = not food mildew = not food feces = not food __ My mighty steed

MS Excel Spreadsheet Logbook?
ChrisL replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Hooray LAMP! Any chance you'd share some of the details? I'm not talking about the data for your jumps, but instead the database schema, PHP code, etc. As you might guess, I think this is a way better idea than Excel, at least from the standpoint of features and good design. It probably kind of falls over on the "usable by non-geeks" score, but you can't have everything. If you'd rather not, that's cool, but asking is free. Eule LAMP?? I dont get it :-) It actually very easy to use by anyone. Its just not something that is easily set up unless you happen to run your own web server and database server and have some development skills ;-) I'm more than happy to share, but I wont bore the forum with the details. Just as a curiosity, my last canopy (a sabre2) came with 825 lb spectra. I just noticed that my new Aerodyne Pilot that I ordered comes with 725 lb. What, if any, significant difference will this make in durability, shock absorbancy, drag, etc? __ My mighty steed

MS Excel Spreadsheet Logbook?
ChrisL replied to slotperfect's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I actually created my own on-line logbook using MySQL database server, an apache web server, and a web browser front end I wrote in PHP. The main page contains dynamically created totals for jump number and freefall time. The database is searchable by single or multiple criteria, etc I can access and update my logbook from any internet connected computer __ My mighty steed -
This guy asked a perfectly reasonable question. Your response was uncalled for and unhelpful. __ My mighty steed

Theres just nothing quite like a nice juicy sweeping generalization, is there? Someday I may be able to speak for everyone too, but I'm not there yet When I sold a main last year I attached all the lines in order to my own home made card to keep them all properly ordered. Must have been a fluke... __ My mighty steed

Please comment on this months Parachutist profile
ChrisL replied to ChrisL's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Chris, Thanks for responding to the thread. Its interesting to see how different people had different reactions to the information presented in the profile. Most experienced jumpers almost unanimously assumed that there were simply gaps in the background info regarding your student progression and early jumps and that you didnt start jumping that 135 until you had some experience. My fear was that the inexperienced jumpers would make no such assumption and take the info at face value. Thanks for filling in the gaps :-) Chris __ My mighty steed -

That could well be the case, but Parachutist doesnt include any of that background info that would put the article information in proper perspective. Based solely on the information contained in the article, I believe its possible to misinterpret this. Most people are not going to dig deeper or do any research into his student days and will just accept the article as fact. Fact that seems to say that a 1.33 wing loading is both conservative and appropriate for a nivice jumper. Thats my point. __ My mighty steed -

Maybe my post was so long that the main thust of my commentary got lost. I wasnt asking what people thought of Chris wing loading :-) My question was essentially: Does anyone besides me think that the article could possibly be mis-interpreted to mean that Chris' first canopy was loaded conservatively? I DO NOT want to give the impression that I am judging anything about Chris or his canopy choices, or even whether or not his first canopy was really loaded that high. I dont have the experience, knowledge, or wisdom to do any of the above. The article does in fact state that he put his first thousand jumps on that Sabre 135. The rest is just math. I think the way the article is worded could possibly be misinterpreted. Thats what I was commenting on. __ My mighty steed -

My recent copy of Parachutist did a profile on skydiver Chris Salcone. First, please let me state unequivically that this commentary is NOT intended as any kind of slight or insult to Chris, who I am certain is a very cool person and exellent skydiver, or to Parachutist magazine which is an exellent publication with great articles. I enjoy it thoroughly every month. My commentary is about what I percieve to be a possibly confusing message that the profile might convey and I'm interested in hearing peoples responses to this commentary from any point of view. Agreement or disagreement. First, let me state the area that I consider to be potentially misleading. This is semantics, but nonetheless I think it could possibly give an incorrect impression. The sematic point is about the difference between "conservative canopy progression" and "conservative canopy choice" The article states that Chris believs in a conservative canopy progression and backs this with the fact that he stuck with his first canopy for 1000 jumps before downsizing. I think everyone will agree that that is most definitely a conservative progression. The confusion stems from the fact that the two things (choice or progression) are easily confused , especially for a novice jumper. Chris's stated weight is 155 lbs. and his first canopy according to the article was a Sabre 135 If we tack on 25 lbs for gear, his exit weight was 180 lbs. This put his wing loading at approximately 1.33 for his very first canopy as a novice jumper. I think most people would also agree that while Chris progression was conservative, his canopy choice was actually fairly agressive for a novice jumper. In the end Chris says that he has never had an accident or injury under canopy in thousands of jumps. I want to reiterate that there is nothing in the article even remotely wrong or intentionally misleading. Chris says he had a conservative canopy progression and that appears to be 100% true. The possible confusing message is that a wing loading of 1.33 is conservative ("progression" confused with "choice") and therefore appropriate for a novice, and this is bourne out by the fact that he has never had any kind of problem under canopy in thousands of jumps. I do not believe that this is what the article is saying. Not at all. I do fear that its possible to misinterpret it because of the way its worded and the way the facts are presented.
