Word. Look at a skeleton. There is NOTHING where your lower back is but a house of cards we call "vertibrae." Serious abs will give you a lower back that can take the load. Those guys (and girls) who look like (or are) they are 6 months pregnant are screwing their backs. t It's the year of the Pig.

Hard butt-first landing. Feels like I was in prison
Tonto replied to ntrprnr's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You have 2 legs. They are largely repairable. You have 1 spine. When it's broken, the chances of repair are slim. 1. PLF. Seriously. 2. Experience is what you get when you don't get what you want - so watch those "Wonky winds." t It's the year of the Pig. -
Q. Do you keep track of your jumps? A. Yes. I have 4679 logged dives and 57 hours, 55 min and 29 seconds of documented freefall time. My freefall time is low for my number of jumps because here, 11 000ft is the highest exit altitude in the country, and I have 750 CRW dives worth 1 second each. I update on DZ.com every 10 jumps. Q. Do you record your jumps in groups instead of individually? A. Individually. I log jump number, date, location, aircraft, equipment, altitude, delay and total time. I also add a brief comment on the dive. In addition, I log numbers on CRW, camera, tandem, AFF, Intructional, number of swoops and fun, and split fun between RW, Freefly and Wingsuit dives. I also log equipment by cost. Purchase price + additional expenses / by number of dives on that equipment. If the equipment is sold I subtract the sale price from the purchase price to get a real cost per jump in Rands. 1 rand = +_ 15 US cents. This is offset against money earned on that equipment doing AFF, Tandem, Instructionals etc so that I can calculate real earnings. Example 1. Tempo History, Cost per jump Total cost Jan 1998 R3500 Sold Jan 2005 R3000 Loss R500 30/01/2005 1590 dives = R0.31 per dive Example 2. Stiletto History, Cost per jump. Total cost Feb 2003 R4500 Line replacement R100 Line replacement R100 Replaced Line set December 2003 R800 Total R5500 03/09/2005 525 dives = R10.47 per dive As for the content on the dive, this would more likely log the performance of my student on their AFF, so that if they forget their logbooks, I can see how current they are, how they performed, whether they were passed to the next level and what that level is. I take all my students right through the program. I'm not a beleiver in passing them around from instructor to instructor. If it's a personal dive, then I log my performance vs goals etc. Perhaps as the novelty of skydiving wears off I'll become a little less pedantic. When I hear people say "I don't have the time." I hear "I don't care." Work out your skydiving cost per hour of freefall time to include driving time and cost, accomodation, equipment, lift tickets etc. Look at the number - then make the time. t It's the year of the Pig.

I got everything wrong that had anything mentioning America in it. Everything else I got right, so I know sex better than I know Americans. I think that 1. Americans have sex impossibly late. (I put 15, which is old for here as many, many kids are active at 11, some earlier. It's "cultural..") 2. American men are faithful. I guessed at 70% - which is about what my experience is with my married peers - who have told me. 3. (Some) American women are conservative. 6. 25% of American men are ... well.. figure that out for yourself. 15. (Some) American women should masturbate more. How can you expect someone else to please you when you can't even please yourself? 17. American women lie. t It's the year of the Pig.

Canopy control & "running it off"
Tonto replied to RossDagley's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A canopy, like any wing, has a stall speed. That stall speed will be higher depending on the wing size, wing loading, tempreture, surface elevation, density altitude etc. What you're saying is that if landed properly, all aircraft can touch down with their wheels locked, and without skidding their tyres. (That's tires for those of you without an Oxford dictionary..) That, as we know, is bullshit. What can be done with a canopy is to rapidly convert a chunk of remaining airspeed to lift, pop up 6 or 8 feet, go to stall recovery to get the canopy back above you and reflare for landing, but that's considered to be an old timer trick to prevent having to run over uneven terain like Ben Johnson on steroids and is frowned upon by the purists as it kills a lot of potential distance. Swoopers are able to do everything those with a straight aproach can do. Even though they enter their landing at above trim speed, once their level flight, altitude gain or parasitic drag has reduced that speed to trim speed, they're playing the same game as everyone else. Those who say they "have to" swoop do not understand even the most basic principles involved - unless they intend landing their canopies at above trim speed. (Something several femur kids are king at, by the way..) t It's the year of the Pig. -
I'm a millionaire! I have 2 rigs! Seriously? I'd buy 2 new Vigils and get fresh repacks, another pair of my favorite boots and lots and lots of nice new socks, all the same colour and size so it doesn't matter if one's a passenger, and a nice hot tap in the bathroom cos I don't like the one I have. Then I'd fly to Jari-land and hang around till they sold me an S5 Blade. t It's the year of the Pig.

Until you consider that the 82nd Airborne Division can have people and equipment on the ground anywhere in the world in 18 hours. The 25th Infantry Division can be anywhere in 24 hrs. I see no reason why the federal government should not have been able to get people and equipment on the ground in the gulf region in a similar time frame, considering neither the storm nor the flooding was a surprise. Maybe I'm missing something. Is it really more important to be able to take over a foreign airport on short notice than to respond to a natural disaster on our home soil? I think one thing that you fail to grasp is that we do not have a long and storied history of dropping troops and equipment into 20 feet of water. 've highlighted your mentions of "ground" and "soil." Look at that as a big difference. The US Military is not used to putting boots on lakes or going pier-to-pier or dock-to-dock. Add the element of water - vast and deep water, and things look much, much different from an operational standpoint. That's funny. I see images in my head now of a war room, generals hunkered down over a map decieding what to attack... One General says "I think one thing that you fail to grasp is that we do not have a long and storied history of dropping troops and equipment into 20 feet of water. Must be a dry place. No water or a very, very small likelyhood of water..." Dude delivering the coffee says, "Like a desert?" Yes! A Desert! Iraq here we come! t It's the year of the Pig.

Ah.. refugee noun; a person who has been forced to leave their country in order to escape war persecution, or natural disaster. These people are still in their own country. The correct term, jokes aside is IDP or internally displaced people. t It's the year of the Pig.

What are the Natural Disaster Risks where You Live?
Tonto replied to lawrocket's topic in The Bonfire
You missed sunburn/melanoma/skin cancer. At 5000ft AMSL under the hole in the Ozone layer (Thanks, industrialised nations..) a lunch with your shirt off could cost you your life. t It's the year of the Pig. -
John is really pouring his soul into this right now. He was back to backing wingsuit dives this past weekend. I'm pretty sure you can lay the credit for an instant weekend improvement of 20mph at the door of the GS-1. Once he starts to fine tune he'll improve more. This is the first mono wing he's jumped and was happy with it's responsiveness. t It's the year of the Pig.

Did I say there were shortcomings? You may well find the suit was built 100% to the measurements given. If that's the case, then the fault surely lies with the person who took the measurements. As for being your press officer.. the only people who make no mistakes are those who do nothing. We're all on a learning curve, and there is a great deal of anticipation around the GS-1 both locally and worldwide. I've recieved ill fitting gear before, and know of no one who's got everything right, including the master monsters like Tony suits. It's all about the response. t It's the year of the Pig.

Well... he's not a giant! He says the suit tore cos it was tight - but I know from experience as a dealer for another manufacturer that the measuring process in these things is critical. Although I've never had an issue with any of the measurements I've taken, I'm relieved to see that Birdman have moved to the simple "Height and weight" scale for the bulk of their suits. Tiny people (and I guess giant ones too) don't fit on their chart though. Taz is easily on the height side of the XS, but would have to put on about 40 lbs to get on the weight side, hence the need to retain custom sizes. Jii-Wings would be wise to get someone experienced to measure people for their suits. t It's the year of the Pig.

Saw John McKay's GS-1 this weekend. He was happy with the numbers he was posting (Mid 60's - he's a big guy) but was unhappy with the fit. The suit tore when he put it on, and he ended up jumping without shoes as the suit was too short. I'd be interested in hearing what feedback you have on this. t It's the year of the Pig.

Body Count for this Week's Episode of "Over There" 31AUG2005

I wonder how you'd feel if the chips were down and you had to stand by those words. I'd imagine most would choose life, because without life, there is no hope. Of course, the people of Iraq never had a choice. They had him, now they have you. t It's the year of the Pig. -
