  6. Or get blown way far from where you want to be. I still remember round reserves and people jumping in high winds cos their mains could handle it. I KNOW people jumping 99 sq ft mains won't stand down cos they have 250 sq ft reserves. It's all about balance. t It's the year of the Pig.

  8. Hey Peej, 1. Put the gates up. 2. Go for them with plenty of outs. 3. Be ready to bail if you can't make it work. Swooping is a bit like shooting. You don't learn from the perfect shots. They build confidence and inspire you to continue. You learn from the misses. Each time you miss, you must know why. If you don't understand why, you will not learn. t It's the year of the Pig.
  9. I have 2 rigs. 1. Mirage G4, with a pillow handle, used mainly for AFF. Over the last 1900 AFF dives I've had some "clingy" students and the lower grab/snag likelyhood apeals to me. 2. Mirage G3, with a low profile triangular handle. This rig is used primarily for Birdman, and with an alti, and sometimes a GPS, and wings, low snag possibility etc, I found the metal handle more practical. I have no AAD. The metal handle is certainly the more conservative and in my opinion, overall safer option, and can be pulled even if bones in the hand are broken. That's hardly possible with a pillow as grip strength is a requirement. I have 19 cutaways and have used both D rings and pillows on regular and Tandem gear, all without issue. t It's the year of the Pig.

  11. Does that include the speed generated by a weight shift turm if the unconcious jumper is asymetrical in the harness? t It's the year of the Pig.
  12. I don't think what I'm loading my reserve at is overloading, so that question doesn't apply to me. I'm well under the total weight of 254lbs with gear, and I'm loading it lower than I load either of my mains and have had no difficulty landing them, even at my hot, high altitude DZ. Have you considered a dual canopy situation? I've attached the report for your perusal. It's worth considering. The large Reserve/small main is NOT a recomended config. As for trusting PD, of course I trust them. 3 of my 4 canopies (2 of which are reserves) are made by PD. Adopting a "wait and see" attitude when I don't need to change yet, is prudent and has nothing to do with trust. In 20 years time, I may trust them even more. t It's the year of the Pig.
  13. I have very few monowing flights, but have you tried weight shift turns? Simply moving hips across left to slip left and right to slip right? The banking creates both turn and alti loss, which is a lot of relativity to manage. t It's the year of the Pig.

Had I split the discussion from that person's post, the possibility existed of ANOTHER poster answering your post in the same way, thus spawning mulitple Skydiving vs Driving threads.   15. I'll wait 20 years to see how it works out. If I've learned one thing in skydiving, it's don't be the 1st kid on the block with new toys. (Think Reflex Catapult, early cypres, early vigil, early neptune, Nova, reverse risers, etc, etc.) I would expect my reserve technology to have been jumped as a main for a long time. I have nearly 1000 dives on F-111 type fabric 7 cells as main canopies. I like that when flying my reserve. Or maybe I'm just happy with my PD 126R. t It's the year of the Pig.
  16. I voted 10% or less. I started jumping in South Africa in 1985. My 6th jump was my 1st freefall, and there was no AAD on that rig. In the words of my JM just before exit "Remember, there is no hurry. You have the rest of your life to pull." About 9 years later, I was "gifted" an AAD by a satisfied former student of mine. When I sent it back to Cypres for it's 4 year check it was gone for 6 months. When it returned, it never worked properly. Sometimes it would turn on, sometimes not. This resulted in many, many meaningless reserve packjobs. One of the theories from Cypres was that the unit was under "physical pressure" and so I sold my Tempo 150 and put a Tempo 120 in. This never solved the problem. 2 years later the mandatory battery change solved the problem. The unit had spent the past 2 years with a "faulty" battery. Needless to say when the 8 year check came up I never sent it off to the people who had built it, and disabled it for 2 years. The unit remained in my rig until it reached it's 12 year expiry date, and was then removed and not replaced. All in all, my "free" Cypres cost me a great deal of bother and provided me with no peace of mind. I own 2 rigs. A Mirage G4 - Stilleto 107 - PD 126R used primarily for AFF and a Mirage G3 - Safire 109 - PD 126R used primarily for Birdman but is occasionally pressed into service as an AFF back-to-back rig. I'm 44 years old. I think that 1st generation AAD's like the Sentinel and FXC were compromised when the sport grew away from solo jumps and bigger RW dives were being done and CRW developed. I think the current generation of AAD's like the Cypres/Cypres 2, Vigil, Argus are again compromised by the sport's growth, in particular WRT Swooping and wingsuit flight. Gone are the days of "turn on and forget." Gone are the Cypres ads showing some drawing of a dude swooping a pond. You better think carefully about that bomb on your back. The sport is contantly growing and changing. Your cypres is not. The Vigil may have the ability to evolve through it's ability to upgrade it's software in the same way the Neptune has grown with the sport in recent years. The Cypress is stuck. Sure, you can get the "Fast" version, but then I doubt you will get it to fire, even if spinning unconsious in a wing suit. Right now, while AAD manufacturers either cling to the past or try and contemplate the future, I prefer to rely on what I started with, which has evolved along with the sport. If I go in as a result of a no pull, you can resurect this thread and make me look foolish if you wish. AAD's are a personal choice. I have more saves on myself than the entire Cypres/Vigil/Argus companies combined. I've never had a boot up problem, leaked acid into my reserve container or had dodgy battery problems. I trust myself and that's good enough for me at the moment. I base that trust on the actions I have taken in my 19 cut aways from wraps, entanglements and malfunctions, and resolving one reserve problem. I will put an AAD back in my rig when an event I'm participating in requires it. t It's the year of the Pig.

  24. The reason I said it was a bit harsh is because it was such an intollerant reaction. We go out to play with parachutes each weekend. We stack them, we swoop them, we use them in many different ways. I'm sure every whuffo would want each fatality dealt with as a Darwin award. t It's the year of the Pig.
