I am shocked and saddened.... really not much to say as words dont really say it. I hope that he found the peace he was aparantly looking for. That said though, I in no way feel that his choice is a true option, ever... wow..... all that comes to mind as I shake my head...... Condolences to all, Scott Callantine "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Hello all....... I am following up on my Wings container that I received at the beginning of last year! Love it but there was one thing I was not happy about. It is refered to in the following thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=891395#891395 On the reserve tray there was what I called a "Catch" Never really bothered me but noted it when packing the first time. Not a big deal but it did generate a few very interesting openings with one riser set or line group getting "caught" for a breif time. I could feel it on deployment and ended up with line twists when it happened. Simple fix was to change packing method and not get the risers all the way into the channel. I ended up adjusting my pack to include a set that after I was getting the main bag in the tray I would bring "up" the main risers onto the side of the reserve tray and out of the channel. Once I started doing this no more problems. Well I let Sunrise know and through the help of a local Wings dealer who also contacted them about it after looking at it and seeing what I was talking about, Marko contacted me and said they would "correct" this for No charge. I sent it off after christmes and got it back a few weeks later with the "fix" nopted in the pictures. Very nice work was done, and they made a "Strap" for lack of a better term on the top of my head that runs from the right and left reserve tray lower vertical seams diagonally to the main pack tray creating a soft wall to prevent the lines from being packed under the catch. I have noted before and facter in the attched pics. Looks like it will do the trick but I will not get a chance to jump it till tomorrow (weather permitting). Interesting way that they came uyp with the fix.. Again I will need to jump and pack a few times to really get a feel for how it is going to work but it looks as though it will solve the issue. The rig has cut in laterials and this seems to be the only wings design that has this. I looked at a few other peoples that dont have the cut in's and they had the reserve tray with no "catch" Not really a big deal to me once I figured out the cause and adjusted packing to solve the problem BUT Kudos out to Wings for listening to what I was having a issue with and then comming up with and doing a fix. Workmanship looks awesome now I just need to see how it works.... Out of curiosity I was wondering if any body has seen this on a wings, the "catch" that is, and has heard about this as an issue.. Tandem Instructor Poll: (Intentional) Flips On Exit
sdctlc replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
I prefer to minimize variables in a tandem. Flips do/can serve a purpose, if the exit is poor sometimes instead of fighting the student, I will induce/allow a flip to solve an issue and allow you to get the student back in control, i.e. get the arms and legs if out of control back into control. I know a number of instructors that firmly belive that the filps are fine and do them on about every jump mostly out of a cessna. Again that is their opinion, but my opinion is "Why introduce an extra variable into the equation" My job is to first of all land safely with a passenger, realistically for not that great an amount of money so again I say why introduce variables... Second is to add enjoyment to the jump for the passenger and that is something that comes from all aspects of the jump, starting on the ground to landing. A GOOD CHUNK of the time the passenger has no idea what happened on the exit anyway unless there is video and even then hell they jumped from a plane and landed safely. Do I think flips are bad, well they have their place and I have done them and they are fun! But sometimes the best bet is to REDUCE THE VARIABLES! Just my 0.02 cents "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!" -
there seems to be periodically a discussion about "Integrity" or "reverse" risers and seems to create a bit of buzz on the net now and then. The one key thing to remember is that if you use them you will not notice a difference in their use during normal jumping BUT there are some situations that need thought regarding your EP's. One example of a difference you need to think about is created by a reduced angle between the rings on the "reversed risers" and the reserve riser. This can restrict the "open" space needed to allow the "reversed" 3-ring system to unfold releasing the main. This is where the talk of incompatability comes into play. RI Flexon for example, of which I have owned 3 and jumped for may years, had the option for reversed risers, which I also had for a number of years (not any more and the story below will tell why). The location of the rings on the MLW with all of my Flexon's was much "higher" on the shoulder, i.e. more at the top of the shoulder compared to Jav, vec, or really any other rig. This gave a good deal more of the "Open" space for the reversed risers release when needed from a open malfunctioning main... There are a number of ways to have a problem happen regarding the cutaway with reversed risers though. Some have been mentioned including the mechanical advantage issue for the cutaway. You can run into a problem if the reserve is deploying while under an open main. We all know that the opening sequence of the reserve lifts its risers off the shoulder and the reserve riser becomes progressively closer to the "reversed" main riser rings if the main is not yet cut away. Now from my own personal experience I was under my open main then realized my reserve was going out. I looked over my shoulder to see the freebag going to line stretch and my first thought was "shit" so I cut the main away before the reserve was open, thinking "quick chop fall under the reserve, canopy transfer all will be good!!"". Right???? WRONG!!!, a second later found myself looking up at a "Cut Away Main Main/Reserve Bi-Plane" with the cut away handle in my hand and cables dangling. Second thought: "WTF, this is not what I was expecting!" Luck had all ending good and that is a different story. I bring this up as something to think about regarding reversed risers… The reverse risers are out there, not so popular now but they are still around. You need to think about the differences with EP's brought about with this type of riser. Have your emergency procedures thought out regarding different situations that may be generated by the reversed risers. It is not always as simple as cut away - deploy reserve every time. If you use decide to get reversed risers great, if you don’t great, but be aware how these risers might fit into your emergency procedures and beaware of the rig you jump in regards to the manufacturers stand on these risers.... One should carefully think about the different problems that can come about with reversed risers. I dont jump them any more, have a set in my gear bag but not on anything... Blue Skies, Scott C. I personally like to idea of Top Mount. I have a HC 40 and have it on top of a BatRack. I also have a Still I can mout as well, its on a Strobo. I thnk it is cleaner and less prone to snagging something and no issues with Riser slap. Dont get me wrong, I dont think a Side mount is bad, I just personally prefer a topmount.. Scott C. C-man, congrats, John hit 200 yesterday as well! The numbers are getting up there for the Blue Crew that started not that long ago! Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Hell that chair, well who are we kidding that "plethaer" outfit and dirty girl look, may lead to a nice relaxed evening with a little fun. Start strong and end up with a nice "who's your daddy" spanking..... Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Got one hop-n-pop at 2.6k .. Ugh, that was low.. Person before me actually had a hop-n-chop Shit, 2.6K that is an altitude I have launched chunks from and turned points on in the past. Some things we have done we may not want to revisit but hell it was fun at the time. Free jumps at a boogie from 2.6 to 3K due to the clouds. DZO had PD tour in town for 4th of July Boogie and nobody was jumping so he started the Cessna and said "JUMP" so we did, hell it was free! Started as solos then went to 2 ways and finally chunking 4 ways with two different teams. Goal ended up becoming a 4 point 4 way and brioken by 2K. Both of us got to the 4 th point but had a grip out. Could not say differently as it was seen on the ground by the other team in each case. Living in the NW has also lead to having many jumps barley at 2K as solo h-n-p's Was this about an RSL? Oh well just got thinkig about the low exit altitudes that had been common before... Scott C. what is wrong with that picture, hell he did go the extra mile on safety, he has got a rock there to keep the truck from rolling backwards, Geeze people, really gotta calm down. Too much safety just flat out gets in the way! Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Have one and use it on a BatRack with a D-box from BoneHead. Works great but I dont use the esy function as it will only auto focus with it. Size and weight are very light and output is awesome. I am very happy with it "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Wondering what it takes to get a DC-3 started
sdctlc replied to Tweek's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Jack Guthrie at Skydive Utah might be able to help in gettig some info, they have a DC3 sitting on the airport. They take it up when they meet certian criteria, no idea what that is but it might be a good place to start to getting the information. Other option would be to find other DZ's that have a DC3, like Eloy, and talk to them what their criteria is. http://www.skydiveutah.com/images/3.jpg http://www.skydiveutah.com/images/31.jpg Hope that gets you going in the right direction.... Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!" -
Good for her/them. Open is the "Pro" class If someone has the Drive sometimes that is not enough. Others have the $$ but that is not enough sometimes either. IF the $$ and the drive is there great, lets see a Great team next year that will have to prove itself with points not $$. For the rest of us that are lacking in one or the other of the above noted items, lets watch and live with a tinge of "wish I could do that" ittis! Scott C. Mine has had the batteries crap out on me a few times and now I have a "Back up" mouse in my laptop case. Problem is the damn cord just bugs me. Oh well it does save me the keyboard trouble route. You dont have a spare mouse around? Maybe this will cut down on your daily post whoring load/need/requirement? Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

I have a W10 now with a PD160R in it now. When I ordered the rig I told them my main and reserve canopies and the reserve at the time was a Raven I. The 160 fits no problem in there but they did build it with a Raven I in mind..... Hope that helps, Scott "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Camera dudes started shooting digital stills
sdctlc replied to efs4ever's topic in Photography and Video
This brings up an interesting line of thinking. A number of DZ's dont provide the extra equiptment to do the prints or CD burn. Add to that, gettig paid the same as a camera flyer its tough to justify investing in this equiptment on top of the digital camera when comparing to costs with shooting 35mm film and then giving it to the subject. The draw back is the fact that you never get to see the poct's (95%) when the film leaves and if you get "the" shot you dont know it and cant do anything with it most of the time w/o going digital...... Next season I am kicking the idea around about digital but most likely will stick one more year with 35mm. The DZ I do most stuff at sends the edited video within a week and I am thinking about tagging along on that idea and sending the film with the video. That was I can get a disk burned at developing, see the shots to see whaat I can do to improve or see what worked very well. It is something I am kicking around but still dont have it 100% worked out in my head. Anybody do something like this...... Digital is really cool though Scott "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!" -
I have a HC40 and have found that in Easy mode you cant have manual focus. As a result I just shoot in non-easy mode to keep the focus set to infinity. I tell ya what, let me know if you figure out how to jump the HC40 in easy mode but with manual focus Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"

Watch What Your Grabbing! 12.5 Reserve Deployment
sdctlc replied to catfishhunter's topic in Safety and Training
Well, it looks like a nice opening aty least I hear about this happening now and again either a handel is pulled in a funnel ot a snag comming out the door... Does the video show anything happening on the exit earlier, i.e people grabbing in the wrong place for grips on exit? Scott C. "He who Hesitates Shall Inherit the Earth!"
