I don't know why I'm posting these links really.. People would have to read them and it's not a fast look kind of subject..... The biggest difference between the disaster that the government studied and the nightmares of incoming ICBMs from the former Soviet Union is the size of the explosion. Cold War-era fears imagined massive hydrogen bombs detonated in the sky, not a smaller device – one that might fit inside a parked van – exploding on the street. "Our images of nuclear war are either of Hiroshima or Nagasaki or what we saw in the movies during the Cold War," said Brian Michael Jenkins, a senior adviser to the president of the RAND Corporation. "If you are thinking about (a city) being wiped off the face of the earth, that's not what happens." The study, "Key Response Planning Factors for the Aftermath of Nuclear Terrorism," was produced in November by the Homeland Security Department and the National Nuclear Security Administration. Even though the government considers it "for official use only" and never published it online, the study is circulating months later on scientific and government watchdog websites. The weapon was developed by the Manhattan Project during World War II. It derived its explosive power from the nuclear fission of uranium 235. The Hiroshima bombing was the second artificial nuclear explosion in history, after the Trinity test, and the first uranium-based detonation. Approximately 600 to 860 milligrams of matter in the bomb was converted into the active energy of heat and radiation (see mass-energy equivalence for detail). It exploded with an energy of 16 kilotons of TNT (67 TJ).[5] It has been estimated that 130,000 to 150,000 people had died as a result of its use by the end of December 1945.[6] Its design was not tested in advance, unlike the more complex plutonium bomb (Fat Man). The available supply of enriched uranium was very small at that time, and it was felt that the simple design of a uranium "gun" type bomb was so sure to work that there was no need to test it at full scale. Contents [show] Also, Khan could have difficulty achieving his political goals because the government limits his movement. He was detained in 2003 and admitted on television in 2004 that he operated a network that spread nuclear weapons technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya. Pakistan has insisted that Khan's proliferation network has been shut down, but the U.S. still has concerns because American investigators have never been able to question him. The U.S. is especially worried about Iran's nuclear program amid fears the country could one day seek to build a nuclear bomb. After Khan admitted leaking atomic secrets, he was immediately pardoned by former President Gen. Pervez Musharraf and placed under de facto house arrest. The government ended his house arrest in 2009 but still limits his movement to some extent. Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, a metallurgical engineer, joined this program in 1976, but became highly dissatisfied with PAEC's approach to indigenously developing of this program with no foreign assistance required. In spring of 1976, Abdul Qadeer Khan took over the program and founded Engineering Research Laboratories (ERL), starting from centrifuge designs he stole from his employer URENCO, the Dutch firm where he had worked as a senior scientist. To acquire the necessary equipment and material for this program, Khan developed a black market procurement network, which was later used to provide enrichment technology to Libya, North Korea, and Iran.[51] http://nucleardiner.com/archive/item/us-pakistan-and-pakistan-iran-nuclear Could terrorists build nuclear weapons? A study prepared for Nuclear Control Institute by five former U.S. nuclear weapons designers concluded that a sophisticated terrorist group would be capable of designing and building a workable nuclear bomb from stolen plutonium or highly enriched uranium, with potential yields in the kiloton range. This risk must be taken seriously, particularly in light of documented attempts by al Qaeda to acquire nuclear material and nuclear-weapon design information. Despite claims to the contrary from plutonium-fuel advocates in the nuclear power industry, effective and devastating weapons could be made using "reactor-grade" plutonium, hundreds of tons of which are processed, stored and circulated around the world in civilian nuclear commerce. Click here for documents that examine the ability of terrorists to construct nuclear weapons with materials now used in civilian nuclear commerce. I don't thing I made any links to a 007 movie... Lets stick to facts... When I get back home I'll give you all the links to how The cia, nsa, dod. think what is the likely bomb design... Killler....

If you think that they are smart enough to run and build a complex enrichment plant and "NOT" smart enough to build a U-235 fission bomb copied after the little boy bomb? Because "EVERYONE" else thinks that it is the most likely use of a nuke used by nutters... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Boy Unlike a fusion bomb that has to stay together long enough to achieve critical mass and more likely to blow itself apart before going "BOOM" Like the North Korean's first test of their pu-239 fission bomb... The nice thing about U-235 in bomb design is that just bring two sub-critical masses together (about 28kg ) will give you a really big bang.. It is guessed that little boy only burned 5% of it u-235 fuel... Killler....

Wrong and wrong. Also we were discussing Iran Israel now you throw up a article about a Nuke strike on DC? You didn't see that it was about the use of a gun barrel nuke parked in a van inside a city... i think that is exactly what I said was the most likely use against Israel... Most people would think it was spot on target to this thread.... But , Then again this is speakers corner where facts don't mean $hit and posts are take "WAYOUT' of context... And how would they do that without nuking the Palestinians and having fallout and radiation killing and contaminating the Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Jordan? Don't forget where their proxies live. Those are the same proxies on whom they will be depending to take the fight across borders in to Europe and the USA if required. Your argument doesn't stack up. You think and said the city and all the people around it would be killed and other countries would be f@#ked and .. THAT IS NOT THE TRUTH or FACT, Far from it... Killer...

You know little about nuclear weapons I see.... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/27/dc-nuclear-blast-report_n_1382086.html Thought out history leaders have been willing to send their people thru hardships and even death for their own goals... The leadership of Iran will be watching CNN on a widescreen TV in a nice underground bunker when the $hit hits the fan... To think that it's unthinkable for nutters to use a weapon in this case is silly and not inline with known history of past behaviors... The goal of this group of nutters is the removal of israel and jews from the face of the earth... They believe that this is the "WILL of GOD" and must happen... People do CRAZY shit all the time... What makes you think when they get the chance to make the words of GOD come to be, They will not pull the trigger... Will it happen? I don't know... But, History tells me that there is a very good chance it will... Killler....

I could see a crude gun barrel nuke used by hamas or one of the other 1/2 doz nutters over there... You need to get away from the shiny new ICBM with a small Hydrogen bomb on top... I think a 1ton van with a old cannon barrel closed off at the end as the tube and two slugs of U-235 and you got a copy of the little boy bomb... And that design is so simple that we never even tested it before use on Japan.... Killler

Limited use of nukes is not unthinkable... Iraq used poison gas and got away with it.... I just don't think we can take it off the table... They have been funding attacks against us and Israel for years and years without having a nuke... Killler....

Just having the bomb changes the game.... MAD keeped the world in check for 65 years.. BUT, At the same time we planned to have and use limited tactical nukes ... The first thing to remember is that people do stupid shit all the time... Add god in to the thinking of anything your f#@ked.... I could see Iran thinking that it would get away some what ok after using a nuke on Israel... Killler...

Bill.... They are already enriching to 20% and to get to bomb grade... 85% + is fast once you are at 20%.. They have no need for the size and scope of enrichment for power plants... they run at 3% to 4% for fuel rods... They are putting the pieces in play to fast track a uranium 235 a-bomb... They keep spinning more uranium everyday and everyday we are closer to being to late to stop it... Killler..

Businessweek Hurricane Sandy Cover: 'It's Global Warming, Stupid'
killler replied to ShcShc11's topic in Speakers Corner
In the last 25,000 yrs sea levels have raised over 400 ft and are still rising.... That is the way it is... People build a house on a beach and cry when they get washed out, They build on fault lines and cry when there is a earth quake... They rebuild New Orleans even though it below sea level and sinking lower and lower and they will cry the next time it's flooded out by a storm.... Every time something " oil spill, fire, storm, earth quake people stand on the soapbox crying it's never gonna be the same, The environment is ruined and it will never recover.... then later life starts to rebound and a new cycle starts.... here's a link for you... climate change http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/100,000-year_problem Killler -

No scientist worth their salt would say one way or another about a particular storm, especially not so soon after it. We can definitively say that the damage was worse as a result of global warming (the extra 10ish inches of sea level). We may also at some point look back at this storm and conclude it was consistent with a trend of increasingly severe weather, or we may look back on it as an outlier. Either way, we'll need a much wider lens than that afforded a couple days later. Blues, Dave Can you tell me how 12 ft 10in of water is causing "SO MUCH" more damage then just 12ft of water.... Man is just a sea flea on a blue whale's tail in terms of Changing the planet.... The power of nature is gonna do what it does.... In the 4.3 billion plus yrs that this place we call earth has been a frozen ball and a tropical heatwave .. Life has come and gone.... 98% of all living things that once were here are now extinct... Our time will come and we too will fall on the extinction list... That is just the way the cosmos works... Whether it be a super volcano, space rock, Gamma ray burst from a super nova 5000 light yrs away or a virus, Are time will come. To me it shows how small minded people are that they think "MAN" somehow can control it... Live life to the fullest and don't sweat the stuff you can't control... Killler -

Bill, Why would "REALLY" smart people think that planets are not the norm? I like to think that common sense would lead you to believe that planets are very common and life is also very common, We are not special in any way, shape or form... Just a very small part of the cosmic soup.... But then everyone likes to think they are specail.. Killler
