One thing I have found when I am teaching packing is how people make the stows. I have found it much easier to make neat line stows by first making the stow in my hand and then wrapping the rubberband over it. By doing this you can work any unevenness into each bite so it is completely unnoticeable. I see a lot of newer packers putting 2 fingers through the rubberband and pulling the stow through. I don't know about 7 cell vs nine, but it's pretty much different for every canopy. You really need to spend some time up top playing around to see what gives you the best result in every situation. That being said all my canopies (Icarus canopies) do best in rear risers. Scott Miller has told me every PD canopy he has jumped has done best in 3/4 brakes. Each canopy is definetly different. I wouldnt say the xfire is the same as the vx. Since you are loading the xfire up pretty high, you will probably see a lot more lift coming from the vx. I found the xfire performance started to drop off over 2.0. The front riser pressure is a lot higher. I can pull it down pretty far, and it wont pull from your hand until you let it. You can let it up a little, but you wont get it back down once speed has started building. It is a lot more ground hungry in full flight, and when you transition from brakes to rear risers (for glide lets say) the canopy surges quite a bit. It floats pretty well in brakes but like most Icarus canopies, I believe it gets it's best glide from the rear risers. I was pretty surprised how well the VX opened. I roll the tail real tight (like press the air out of it over your shoulder and then roll the tail some more). I have gotten really consistant openings that way. And the recovery arc is a lot longer. Actully I think you almost had it. The lines are different (HMA) The trim is different (and the lines continuous) Stabilribs are added The nose was closed off The slider has brass grommets.
