Thanks. I think I need to work on my arch and be more careful who I jump with before I try weights, but I'll keep it in mind. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

I have a tendency to float and sometimes it happens that I get in a situation where I remain 30-40' above three people. What is the best way to handle this potentially dangerous situation? How best to determine when and where to track? "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

I've only been to four DZs, but my home DZ has two 182's and a 206, so I guess that"s small. If you ever get to Franklin, Indiana check out Jerry's Skydiving Circus. Great folks! I've jumped at this DZ twice recently, four times out of a Super Otter (awesome!--a six second takeoff on grass!) and four times out of a Casa (fun!) Very large landing area which is great for a low timer like me. I flat pack, so I apprciated the large packing area. The personel were very friendly. The DZO, Jim West, saw a couple of faces he did not recognize and came right over and introduced himself and welcomed us to his excellent faciliy. Very classy! And Treeboy, the local rigger, patched a small hole in my topskin for two bucks. We all had a great time. We'll be back, for sure.

Tighten the leg straps so tight that it is hard to walk. Works for me. Until I did this my openings were vicious. (I think I might have cracked a rib while on student gear the Spring before last--hurt to breathe for a month.) Got videoed--nothing changed except that my leg straps were tight. In training: Getting UNSTABLE then stable again
Croc replied to somethinelse's topic in Safety and Training
You can do it. Tell your instructors about your concerns. You'll be high enough that you can easily recover from an unstable position with thousands of feet to spare. Good luck! Have you asked your daughter what she would rather do? I did AFF, but if someone had told me that I would have to hang from a strut of a C-182 on my first skydive, I would have never set foot on the DZ. Lots to be afraid of with AFF (e.g., the door) but I definitely had a leg up on my SL friends when it came to freefall, but they were better at minor things like landing. (joke) Probably a toss up unless she has a preference. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." I scored a minus 22. I think I got it, but who knows? I'm a plumber, and we think all desk jobs are bullshit. Cavemen, we are. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

Yep, I read my owner's manual and it said that packing any way except pro packing makes you a test jumper. I have a PD 218 seven-cell. It flat packs fine. Test jumping anyone? I hope I haven't given anyone the impression that I do not pack my own chute--I do. Why was your reply directed to me? I jumped my first pack job without a moment's hesitation. I knew it was OK because I packed it! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

I had to jump my pack job before the DZ owner would sign me off. My pack jobs are not very neat. I flat pack--never learned to pro pack. I have decent openings and it seems to me that I generally pack faster than the average pro packer. Why learn to pro pack? Some jumpers at our DZ have thousands of jumps and never pro pack. (Sorry if this is a different subject, but I think many people are intimidated by learning to pro pack, while flat packing is so simple--four line and control line check takes about 30 seconds--that I don't know why manufacturers recommend pro packing. Then again, what do I know?) "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

I came here to learn how to pack after I finished all the other requirements for my A license at another dropzone. Everybody has been great. I've done four ways with jumpers who have thousands of jumps. No cliques, no skygods, no one left out. I feel like every jump is a free coach jump. This is my home DZ now! As a postscript, the other DZ offered packing classes for fifty dollars a pop; here I learned to pack from some folks who have been in the sport long enough to have remembered the invention of nylon, and they never charged me a nickel.

Congratulations on passing AFF! That's a significant achievement. Now as you work towards your A be careful to take instruction only from coaches and jumpmasters. Beware of skygods who are always ready to give advice that may or may not be appropiate for you. Blue skies and welcome to the skydiving community. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. It was very windy at my DZ yesterday ( 20 mph), and the owner had me watch a group of experienced jumpers land so that I could decide whether to jump or not. I have 47 jumps and a PD-218 wing loaded to slightly less than 1:1. Well the wind kicked up a bit more and one guy with thousands of jumps hit some turbulence and his itty-bitty chute bowtied and he fell like a rock. Luckily he was low to the ground and he landed safely, but a guy standing next to me saw that happen at Z-hills at 75 feet and it either seriously injured him or killed him--can't remember. Anyway, I decided not to jump. Didn't matter, the DZ owner grounded the planes after that. There will be other days. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Had to make a quick exit from a Cesna 182 that was losing altitude. I did a retarded exit and hit my head on the step. Glad I was wearing a helmet. Also, since that time, I keep my goggles and helmet on during the entire ride to altitude. Next time I need to make a quick exit I won't be fumbling around for them. I probably have ridden 50,000 miles on various motorcycles without a helmet, but I jump with one. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Could you give me more details about your flap opening up? I saw the surgeon today and she assured me that even a 120mph wind (without goggles) could not dislodge the flap. Under what circumstances did yours open? Thanks. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Charles Fort, commenting on the many contradictions of astronomy

Don't wear any socks and roll the bottoms of your pants up a bit. My AFF instructor had a student in our class do this and she immediately stopped turning once she could feel the wind against her ankles. Might help. Anyhow, turning is very common, and you'll get it! Hang in there! Also might get a video of your next dive. Good luck! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. A senior rigger told me that my RSL does not have a retaining ring. I jump a Vector II. He advised me to see a master rigger about it, which I will do. In the meantime, can anyone tell me why this is bad? Thanks. "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Get the video "Fly Like a Pro" and study the section on landing large, F-111 mains--if that is what you're using. They do Not fly like zp's, and flaring them just takes practice. Also, yours may be worn out, making matters worse. Stick with it--you'll get there! "Here's a good specimen of my own wisdom. Something is so, except when it isn't so." Be very careful with prescription goggles! I had a pair that changed my depth perception. I wore them every time that I worked out so that I could get used to them before I jumped with them. When I did, I flared high, but it sure didn't look high to me! I took them right back. (I got them at Lenscrafters and they have a no-hassle 30 day guarantee. Thanks for the info. I'll ask the surgeon about the flap part when I see him/her in a couple of weeks. I have not met anyone who has had PRK but I know several jumpers who have had Lasik.
