  4. agreed - get a passport and eliminate the issue crossing back to the US from Canada (before passports were required) customs questioned me because the kids didn't have passports I thought they were kidding (have since learned that customs agents are breed with no sense of humor). The conversation went something like - How do we know they are yours? They're not, there hers but the way they behaved on this trip you can have them. OK sir go ahead. I think the shocked look on wifes and kids face gave away the plan. Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
  5. 9. almost forgot, you can shop electric suppliers or other rates with CL&P - the delivery charges are set so no changing those - go to this website to do some research http://www.ct.gov/dpuc/cwp/view.asp?a=3356&Q=405992&dpucNav=| Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. 10. 1) water heater - turn off the breaker to the water heater, take off the 2 cover plates, behind each plate you will see a dial, make sure both the dials you see are on the same setting - I'd recommend 120 degrees, if you live alone and don't take real long or real hot showers then 110 might work - the difference between 110 and 120 will save $2-$3 a month 2) the old fridge can be using a lot more power than you realize, is this the same fridge you had in your old place?, it could easily be $15-$20+ per month 3) the kWh rate is 12 cents and you have a delivery charge, welcome to deregulation & thank you Mr. federal government for screwing up the best utility grid in the world - more under #8 below 4) you used 713 kWh, I don't have any reference to know if this is high or low, there are too many variables, one thing you can't do is compare your bill to others or to your usage last year, again too many variables 5) the empty unit next door may be part of the problem, if the heat is turned off next door then you can be sure it is real cold inside, it is possible that the common wall you have with that unit is not insulated 6) keep checking the meter for a few days to get an idea of the kWh usage for a 24 hour period 7) call the utility for an audit, forget complaining about the meter they are almost never wrong and I've tested a couple hundred, most of the time they are slow 1-2%, you have a digital meter so it must be fairly new and accurate 8) researching the CL&P website: - you are on the best rate you can be on - CL&P is deregulated, this was the government idea of "creating" competition in an industry where size does matter - when deregulation was created the previously integrated utility was "broken apart" - that is why you have all the delivery charges listed, these are the seperate entities involed in getting power to you - once they were split apart each had to have their own President, VP and all the other overhead people and costs - any idiot could predict that the cost of service would rise - you also have the "social program" costs, Public Benefits Charge and FMCC - total of $0.01477 per kWh, so those cost you $10.53 - makes you all warm and fuzzy inside doesn't it 9) there is a fixed charge in the bill that remains the same regardless of usage, $16, this covers the meter, meter reading and bill processing, this is a normal charge and seems in line with other utilities 9) you are paying about $0.20 per kWh, here in SC we fought the government and did not deregulate, the 713 kWh would have a total cost of about $80, $0.112 per kWh after adding the fixed charge of $8, what is so crazy is the government is still trying to force deregulation - trucking, banking and the phone system were all deregulated - anyone happy about that? - the utility system is bigger, $$$, than all of these combined, if they keep screwing with it they will wreck that also - having said that, your best bet is to conserve and use appliances with high efficiency, this will reduce the kWh usage - stop as much of the air inleakage (infiltration) as possible around the doors and windows and any other wall penetrations - use compact fluorescent lamps - your t-stat settings are much lower than most people - overall the best option is to move south and always check the utility usage of a place before you rent or buy - NC, SC, GA are all great places to live, for me FL is too hot - we have a turbine DZ just south of Charlotte and would love to have ya' and the Farm is NW of Atlanta Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
  11. if few thoughts from an energy auditor, start with the simple stuff: - go read the meter and compare it to the reading on the bill, this should not be a problem but you never know - since I don't know what kind of meter you have, look at the meter to see how it works, the dial should be turning or (if digital) the numbers changing, now go to the main breaker panel in the apartment and open the main breaker, the meter should stop, if not then something in the adjacent unit is wired to your meter - we see this all the time - if all that is OK, call the company and ask to have the meter changed or tested, if they balk just tell them you plan to call the Public Service Commission or whatever the regulatory agency is that governs them - in this case the squeeky wheel gets the grease - ask if they have people to come to the house and help with "high bill complaints" or to do an audit - after this, start looking at the meter at the same time each day and record the readings - what is the electric rate?, gas rate? - how old is the frig? -how old is the heating/cooling unit? brand? - what temp do you set the t-stat on? do you change it during the day or night? if so provide info? - gas or electric water heater? size water heater? temp setting on water heater? I could ask a ton more questions but if you can provide the info above that is a good start. Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. 15. unfortunately there are not enough folks to provide the "proper burial" ceremony that our veterans deserve, those that can do the ceremony are booked almost every day, the farther you are away from a military town the harder it is to have it done my father was also a Navy vet, the flag ceremony was done by my son, nephew and myself a couple of his friends that were vets thanked us for doing it properly Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. 16. Probably just threw a dummy out of the plane like the Skyride doofuses at Pell City did on their last weekend there. thought we were all just dummies jumping out of planes?!? funny thing is the cops were given GPS coordinates of where to find a body, while they were standing there the guy comes whistling down and fraps 20' away I don't know about the rest of you guys but I'd be running as soon as I heard the whistling Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. 21. it is about how the man perceives the actions of others and how he personally defines what "respect" is and how important it is for him, simply saying "I respect you" is meaningless, action has to back up the words for some men respect is more important than for others, respect or lack of respect is defined by the individual for instance some simplistic examples are, the man has certain wants - 1) he wants certain things done his way, 2) wants his stuff left alone, 3) wants his stuff put back where it is supposed to go if it is borrowed, 4) wants his mate to leave him a note where she went and what time she will be back so he won't worry about her, etc. - if his wants are met most of the time then no problem - if his wants are rarely met or not met when it is most important to him then he may perceive that he is not "respected" - for instance if he needs a hammer right now and the hammer is not where it is supposed to be then that might be a problem - if he comes home with a plan to ask his mate out to dinner, mate is not around and there is no note then that might be a problem His mood (yes beleive it or not men have moods) is effected by his environment. Bad day at work = shorter temper or sharper reaction to things that happen (missing hammer, no note) Everyone has varying abilities to manage stress. On a stress-free Saturday afternoon it may be almost impossible to get a negative reaction. On Monday evening after getting bitched out by the boss for no reason the missing hammer may cause an explosion. Why - because the boss "took" his self-respect and the missing hammer reinforced that he is not respected - even by the one that he trusts the most. There are tons of ways to show respect. You know your mate, what they like and dislike, what ticks them off, etc. Based on this one will know how to manage. Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together.
