  1. ahh funk, i click the link, but no pic comes up... could you post it here as an attachment? Never go to a DZ strip show.
  2. Plus, there's the whole issue of coordinating supply and demand. Here, it's pretty cold and the skies are often far from clear during these months. If they were actually employed with hard set hours, employers, or DZO, might be faced with the paperwork involved with laying people off (and the hassle that comes with it and rehiring) during the "off" season. Working as an IC is like feast or famine. The way it's set up, the good times, well as the french say... laissez les bon temps roullent! But, as my JM for level IV pointed out, "I made $62 this week." Never go to a DZ strip show.
  3. oh my, i really can't believe you were not allowed to jump because of Bush being in the area. They must of figured the assassins were falling from the skies at that point... Never go to a DZ strip show.
  4. Wow, 8 hours is quite a drive. There is probably a USPA affiliated DZ closer to you. Check the dropzones section on this site or www.uspa.org. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  5. The use of IC designation for tax purposes can actually be beneficial to both the DZ and instructor if one (i.e., the instructor) takes full advantage of the deductions offered him/her. Although when you consider lack of benefits, potential liability, etc. it's probably a raw deal. But, if an instructor challenged the DZ on this, I'd say the DZ would probably say take it or leave it. If they really pressed the DZ might designate them as an employee and tell them when no students were around they could be taking out the trash, cleaning bathrooms, etc.. Oh well, the pros/cons of the IC in any industry are to numerous for me to continue babbling about here. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  6. You could track him down by posing as someone wanting to buy the plane from him... Never go to a DZ strip show.
  7. To me it helps to assure myself that if all else fails, never be afraid to pull and at least I'll stay alive in order to get myself over the performance anxiety (wondering whether or not I'll be able to stay stable, do my turns, etc.). Now, the thing that sucks is that I'm on a very tight budget. I can't afford to fail. (Knocking on wood). This has to be a good release form the stress of ATC huh? Never go to a DZ strip show.
  8. Now you're putting (bad) words in my mouth. Your understanding of statistics is still flawed. I wouldn't play roulette the first or the 25000th time. Risk, 1/25000 on the former or latter would be to great. I'm not taking a 1/25000th risk on my life for the adrenaline rush that hearing the click would give me. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  9. Thanks for all the input on this guys. I was able to perform both front and rear riser turns today (all above 2000 ft of course)! Woohoo! I'm psyched Never go to a DZ strip show.
  10. Ah but that has everything to do with it. If something isn't worth it to you, you don't do it. In a capitalistic society anyway... If sex was not pleasurable, would you have it given all those diseases out there? So, you're right, we wouldn't be likely to play the roulette, but not because this 25000 chamber gun is no more dangerous in terms of odds than a double mal if those are the numbers... But rather we choose not to because the risk (or cost) is not worth the reward (or benefit). Oh shit, economists are falling from the sky! Never go to a DZ strip show.
  11. Finally, someone who gets the Ralph Nader referrence: "Unsafe at any Speed"... I don't think I'll stop driving (just byy a $250 junker) but I do think I'm gonna sell my car to buy a rig. It's the only way I'll possibly get to do what I want. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  12. I think this is one sport where it's probably a pretty damn good idea to be a perfectionist Never go to a DZ strip show.
  13. to quote myself, "hi, i'm fairly new to the sport, and therefore you should definitely take my advice witha grain of salt" Hmm, maybe there was a reason I put that there. I was being honest, I know I should have kept my mouth shut but there were other reasons than the "I do it so you should too" line of reasoning. First, I just seemed logical to me. Secondly, I actually did a bit of research about the sport before deciding which route to take myself so I was using that as well. Plus what I've heard from others. OK ok, just wanted to point out that at least I was up front about my inexperience and that you really had no good reason to "bytch" at me. Thanks and blue skies. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  14. Does anyone know what the requirements are for this boogie? License or # of jumps? I've got 16 days, I might could get my A-license! Never go to a DZ strip show.
  15. Should we feel it necessary to force riggers to inform us of any financial relations they might have wih any manufacturers before giving their opinions on rigs? Just wondering what reasons you give for their rankings? Prioritized criteria list? Never go to a DZ strip show.
  16. yeah, upon reflection, i do remember my fjc instructor/JM tell me he wouldn't go in for me. "I have no friends under 2000 ft" Although he did divulge to me that in some cases it would be logical, possibly even beneficial to ignore "my" hard deck. if it's fine at 2500 but turns to shit at 1600.... Never go to a DZ strip show.
  17. hi, i'm fairly new to the sport, and therefore you should definitely take my advice witha grain of salt... but imho I would switch to AFF as soon as possible. aside from tunnel time, it seems to be the quickest way to progress into the sport Never go to a DZ strip show.
  18. this basically seals it for me, as soon as pops transfers the title, i'm selling my car and getting a custom rig. the only thing i haven't decided on is the container, i think i'm down to mirage or infinity. have jumped the mirage and like it, the guys at my dz seem to like them too but those infinities sure look nice... Never go to a DZ strip show.
  19. ok, correct me please if I misunderstand here, does heavier front risers mean it's more difficult to perform a front riser dive? btw, it's great having a physicist around when ya need one! Never go to a DZ strip show.
  20. I know I've got time before I need to have it signed, I was just curious and a little anxious I suppose to develop my canopy skills. It seems like that's the part of the dive that I'm best at right now anyway. I'm heading to the tunnel tomorrow to work on some freefall. So far my CC has been money, although I'm told by my JMs that I am now doomed having stood up every landing only about 5 ft off the x at most. I think I'll also ask if they could maintain radio silence next time unless the see me screwing myself. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  21. My pops took me to a tunnel when I was like 7 years old or something... Man, that's fear. I thought the damn thing would blow me away and I'd never get back. I think I'm gonna go back tomorrow (18 yrs later) and give it a shot. I would go jump but the weather's shite. I'll give you guys my low experience update tomorrow if I end up going. Never go to a DZ strip show.
  22. Or stop by your local camera shop and pick up a pentax cloth... these things can even be thrown in the washer if you get them a little gunky Never go to a DZ strip show.
  23. I think the A card says a "front riser dive" Never go to a DZ strip show.
  24. Not yet discussed, planned on asking about it on my next jump (hopefully Sunday)... what should I expect to happen if I'm successful with this maneuver? Never go to a DZ strip show.
  25. check the white balance setting on your digicam Ang, sure looks blue to me, but hey, looks good anyway, and i am speaking of the rig here... Never go to a DZ strip show.
