What do you cover in your camera briefing?
jimmytavino replied to Peej's topic in Photography and Video
Peej !!! how are ya'??? don't forget the simple things...which include... Prepare for camera jumps,, before you even GET to the DZ.. Batteries charged, including a back-up adequate space remaining on flash cards and/ or tapes.. IF using Tape... be sure it NOT still cued up to the start of the LAST jump, or somewhere OTHER than at the point where you want the NEXT jump to begin...(can sometimes happen, if you were viewing the footage the night before..) . Altimeter zeroed, Audible set, and of course cypres or vigil... ON more tips,, from the next posters.... jmy -
you're not a nut.. but i'd say you need to relax a little... when we're in traffic, especially 2 lane traffic,,, LOTS of stuff can happen..... Would you have gotten outta your vehicle?? if your daughter was NOT the driver of the car, in the left lane???? people pull,,,"mario andretti" moves , all the time while on the road,, and YES.. sometimes THEIR sense of urgency( especially if they are running late). sometimes overrules common sense, and simple safety procedures.. BUT it happens all the time... I have both a daughter AND a son, and I'd be less than Happy for someone like you, to consider my Son, as "some punk kid"... just cause he made a bold move, in traffic.... YOU never changed lanes,, last minute??? Did YOU have to jam on your brakes,, to avoid a collision??? Sometimes people MIGHT assume that those around them will YIELD,, and will ALLOW them a late second maneuver, if they are in a wrong lane... It's called cooperation, while at the wheel...we were taught to drive defensivley and to ANticipate, silly and/or stupid moves by others.... But there's no good reason for you to have gotten outta your vehicle to harass the kid... Glad that you 'approve' of his driving, till he got to "what you assumed was his job".. God Bless you , for your service, and I thank you sincerely,,,, but you do not have to go marching around,, being the local "traffic sherrif", uniform or no uniform.. take things easy,,,, and you'll be happier.. What's gonna happen when your daughter starts DATING????? skydive safely jmy

Tips on how to finance Skydiving.
jimmytavino replied to Kursk's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Re : "balls to the walls into this fantastic sport"... Just the sort of approach, which could get you into trouble. That might work in some sports,,,, but IMHO,,,not this one... It could be best to go easy and openminded, cautious and willing to accept that there is SO much to learn... carefully and attentively...listening to your instructors, all along the way. I would Never advise borrowing $$$$ to jump... especially NOT a student loan...( regardless of the interest rates ).... Don't you have to BE a full time student somewhere??? to get the loan,, and then, IF you spend it on skydiving, how would you plan to pay your tuition??... try to do both college and skydiving, if possible, but recognize that it's a slower pace, and much more work,, than you may realize. Especially if you do BOTH.... Pack parachutes, sweep the floors, empty wastebaskets....use your networking abilities right within your local DZ, to connect to a part time job, or to create a part time job, in order to generate funds, which can be used exclusively for your new hobby. Are you currently employed full time?? if so, have those wages, cover all your various living expenses and YES, even continue to build savings. See if any work opportunities are available right on the DZ,, from maintanence to , cleaning, to office needs..to packing parachutes. enjoy your next jump. jmy A 3914 D 12122 POPS 3935 -

Gangrape of girl, 15, dozens watched and did nothing
jimmytavino replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
the news reported that the victim " left the dance and was drinking 'alcohol' with a group....." prior to the attack... were those in the drinking group, males?? females?? or a combination of both??? was it this drinking group?? that turned, "animal"??? or did the victim leave the first group,,, only to stumble over to ANother group,,, who assaulted her? the reports seem to indicate that the perpetrators were male and that most ALL of the 'observers' were male... Was the victim enticed into the alcohol consumption,, by males or by females...or a group of both? AND what sort of drink?? are we talking about??/ Hard liquor?? Wine? beer? all of the above? i'd tend to wanna believe that If there were other Girls involved in the 'drinking group', they would have intervened,,, when some IDIOT male(s) began the physical assault....in order to protect the girl.. or at least run off and report the ongoing assault. IF the drinking group was ALL males,, then REAL poor decisions were made by everyone... The victim....who made a terrible choice to "put bottle to lips" ,especially if it was only in the company of a group of boys... ( Have any reports, said just What her blood alcohol level was??) ..and the assaulters, each of whom must have some overinflated sense of machismo,,,, and NO regard for the personal space of women.... There was a REAL opportunity for someone,,, ANYONE, to become a Hero... by disrupting the event,, by chastising the "dicks" involved, and by even physically disrupting the occurence...However "gang mentality behavior."... is peer pressure,, at it's worst, and as we see,, NO one goes against the grain... ALL sorts of cell phones there,,, yet NOT one,,, dialed 911.. NOT a single real man, among that group of Boys... how pathetic... all who will be identified, as part of this crime.... NEED to be incarcerated... or better yet, castrated...then incarcerated... If it was My daughter.... They 'd have to be looking over their shoulders for the REST of their lives. Think " A Time to Kill" Samuel Jackson, Matthew McConeghey (sp) damn jt -
ketchup based Cocktail sauce for seafood!!!! horseradish, ketchup, and whatever spices they include in prepared "seafood sauce" to enjoy with 'extra jumbo shrimp'.... get the two pound 'peeled and de-veined' packages, keep 'em well wrapped and sealed in the freezer. remove and thaw a half dozen or so, at a time..... BURY them in cocktail sauce!!!!... Yum!!! i also really like Arbys' "horsey sauce" packets... ( only i Hate, their roast beef sandwiches......).. " Just What part of the Beef.... IS that" !!?? jt

you MUST be..... cause what Feel Like I do for a living,,,,, is scour the forums threads for posts from skymama......!!!! sometimes funny, usually interesting.....Always helpful... Actually,,,, small business owner, selling accessibility equipment for commercial and residential situations... StairWay Chair Lifts, Wheelchair elevators,, Ramps,, etc. sell , install , service... regional dealer for a couple of national manufacturers, of such items... been at it now for 27 years....can't quit yet....cause Lift Tickets never seem to go DOWN in price.... jmy

. . . . . . ..... "Door " !!! also ,, when at the bank, cashing a check from a profitable job,,, " do you want that, in fifties,,, or hundreds"??? also like the term... "whatchamacallit" or the italian version,,, "Comosegiamma" and always liked, "ten minute call for the Casa Load"....i'll take that,,, any day... lastly ... anytime the kid from college says " Dad I got a B on my paper, ( or exam) ",,, instead of " Dad, my checking account is empty,,, can you put some $$$$ in it..."... jmy

i recall the time when you rented the bobcat!!!!!!! THAt turned interesting tooo!!!! BV... never mind 'have a buddy around" better i think,,,,, to "have a video camera around...." though you DO always do a good job in describing the "ACTION"".!!!! JMY

never...... calling "yourself" a skydiver is presumptuous. you're a skydiver,, when peoples' faces light up, as you arrive at a dz. when others, ask you to join them on a jump, when you NO longer have a savings account...and when your credit cards, are all maxxed out. BUT mostly,,,, when the DZ Staff.... annoints you as such....based on your Progress within the sport... i'd consider anyone who has made one tandem, to be " a person who has experienced skydiving".. i would Not truly consider them to BE a skydiver... not yet... jmy

rock & roll !!! jt

yes, I sure did... providing that you have some penetration.... which will not be the case ,,, if it's at allll breezey. in a windy day, you could be backing up, in which case a slight ( 30 to 45 degree turn to one side or the other..) can better set you up for the " feet and knees together,,,elbows in, slightly sidewards PLF " that you could NEED to do... made over 900 jumps on a french papillon... sometimes would cross my arms, grab as high as i could on the rear risers, and then pull up,, WHILE twisting 180 under the canopy, soas to land running, facing 'backwards' while the canopy was still facing 'forwards'.. pulled it off many many times.... One time,,,,, i landed and did the straightforward 'chin-up move',, and the left riser,,,,,CHINK.... came right off the harness,,, IN MY HAND>!!! i was left, standing there, with one entire side of my main,,,, attached to me,, by my grip.... whoa.... !! the rig had R3's, a "bastardization of the old shot and a halves",,, and the one side, had somehow, undone it's velcro, between when i stepped off the cessna, at 3,500 feet, threw 3 backloops, opened, and flew the canopy descent...never noticed it while under canopy... NOW a part of my post - deployment 'adgenda' , includes a goood.. visual LOOK at each of my 3 rings, and the nylon loop, which holds the yellow release cable...to be sure, that all is in order... If the OP Does jump the PC, expect one thing, for SURE!!!.. the toggle 'pressure' will be sooooo low!!!!! that you'll think the steering line disconnected from the canopy.... very very light .. in fact, i don't believe that the term 'toggle pressure' even came into being,,, until after ram airs came around....(Can any others here, chime in about if that term was talked about in the earlier days of the Para-Commander and other "high performance" rounds..)??? PCs and cheapos as i remember , feel as though your steering line, is connect by ONE stretchy little rubber band.... very different from what you'd be used to... under a square have fun, wear a good helmet,,, not a frappe hat... could be best not to take it to terminal right away, and give yourself some cushion wth your pull altitude.... ALLOW for that , in your spotting.....\ What sort of riser releases are on that Pioneer Container??? what sorta reserve?? and what sorta reserve handle??? If the gear is deemed airworthy, then it sure can be jumped... enjoy jmy uspa 9452 a 3914 d 12122

thanks... so IMC is IFR.....?? I knew what IFR was... is there any difference...? so if you have one plane, flyin' as fast as it can , so it can pace another plane that's flying as SLOW as it can..??? shouldn't That tell ya something??? talk about distraction,,,, I read about a concept in "Aviation Safety Magazine", a long time ago,,, called "in - the - cockpit syndrome",, wherein a pilot gets so absorbed in studying and reading his/ her instruments,, that they fail to notice things OUTside the plane,,,,,, such as, an impending contact with the Planet!!!!! or another equally unobservant AIRPlane!!!!... yikes... i think i'll just continue to be wearing a Parachute system,,, ANYtime i get IN a plane !!! altitude is your friend jt

way to go tbrown, for being super observant, seeing and recognizing the issue, and selflessly staying WITH the jumper, to render aid, if needed... What was the experience level of the man.?? had he ever had a reserve deployment, prior to this? As noted,, there is a VERY good likelihood that he was head down, as the reserve deployed... You have described a nearly identical situation, which i experienced 3 years ago...though i was wearing a jumpsuit for RW,, ( thankfully NO cameras).... and the reserve suffered no damage... but.... i had made 2 tries for my main PC handle and came up empty.. both times.. after hanging around at the end of a 6 way... to do a 2 way... with a pal.... (was coming off an injury, and had waaay less reach, than i expected...) i thought to myself... " well enough of THIS, I'm AAD equipped",,, and found my reserve handle left handed and yanked it.....soas to beat the cutter, to the punch... Well yank.. was the operative word.... and I had to be tipping head to earth,, cause i ate, just ATE, my cheststrap..... it smashed me in the nose, and made it clear to me.... that "freefall was over"... I looked real hard at the canopy.. to be SURE that nothing "broke"... good thing i was jumping a 225 ft. reserve...i had a second rig at the time with a 175..... and it's to my good fortune, that THAT rig was not used.... In fact, after pondering the point you are making... it could be time to sell that Swift+ 175.. ( purchased New, Never deployed) altogether.....it's perfectly solid for others,, but i've added a pound or two, over time... i too have the aerodynamics of a concrete block ( but a concrete block that CAN fly ) and so choices i have made about gear and camerasuit wings, jumpsuits etc.... have been based on that... Bigger is often better,,, in many situations and in my case Does,, apply to my canopies.... i marvel at some of the small SMALL sport rigs that i sometimes see... "upsize , downsize, let's just stick with the right size" and if unsure , let's try to err on the side of caution.... edited to add.... Did you find the freebag???, did he keep or toss the handle... That can vary, based on whether it's the first reserve ride or the fifth... good post jmy A 3914 D 12122

At what point do you stop thinking of it as "home"?
jimmytavino replied to Nataly's topic in The Bonfire
in my case,, never born and raised in New York State, Hudson Valley area not far from Conn.... Lots of family Still there..... But at age 18, went 350 miles northwest, to ANOTHER part of NY state...for college...a college which just so happened to have a "skydiving Club" so i joined in sept of my sophmore year, when i was 19... stayed in the rochester area after finishing college, cause i found a job, liked the local DZ's, had friends, and the cost of living was reasonable... Still i would drive the 700 mile round trip to see my Folks,,, Often.... ( they are in the very same home,, which my father built when he was 25 years old, and in which they raised 5 kids..) the house is in great shape, due to diligent upkeep and to the fact that he built it with a brick exterior...and one of my bros. and his family live next door, in a stucco house which was formerly my paternal Grandparents home. and the lot was big enough to allow dad to build a 3rd house,,, ( in his retirement) which is now the home of my dear sister.... I On the otherhand , have been one of the "out of town " siblings, living in the town where my wife Nancy grew Up.. so i have tons of family here,,,,( where we chose to make our home ) and tons of Family there.... I no longer think of my Home town as "home"... i've been livin' in this town for twice as many years now....as the time spent growing up. here is where our kids were born and raised, here is where my friends are, here is where i'm happy.... BUT i CAN return to the very home in which i was a 5, 6, 7 year old kid, , can eat in the same kitchen, walk in and out of the same back door,,, and litterally sleep in the same twin bed frame, from way back when... not bad... though sadly,, thanksgiving is usually spent here, rather than at M & D's table.. Oh well i still get to see 'em whenever we can visit... So NY is home,,, though i've split my time spent here,,,, between two distant parts of the state... jmy -

7 Children take into care because of obesity
jimmytavino replied to Skyrad's topic in Speakers Corner
please do not mistake "restaurants" for the food dispensing locations, that my post mentions... Food, nutrition, eating and drinking are all wonderful and beneficial things, and one of lifes real delights. Restaurants offer the atmosphere, character(s) , menu, and amenities to allow the experience to be a pleasant one. Fast Food, on the other hand, offers only the barest modicum of "ambience" and coupled with the "semi-good" food... ( can't really say it's bad,,, just 'cause i feel that way.... others may disagree, and apparently MANY do... as shown by the traffic congestion in and out of many such places )..... is not always a healthy choice... i see you've highlighted what DOES sound a bit like "Revolution in the Air" !! Don't really trust the government to step in.. they seldom do what's best for the citizens, but some sense of Optimism inside me, would count on another Entity,, that of good old plain common sense.... It would take a community with resolve ,to make some changes, stop eating in the car,,, give up some "conveniences' if they aren't really good for us...Backstep a little, and instead,,,, prepare sensible healthy food, at home, the way it was decades ago... stretch the grocery dollars, build some family harmony, and build better overall physical and mental health... "shut Down and Shutter "!!!! had a nice ring to to when i typed it, so i stayed with it..!!! but i CAN see where the statement can be interpreted as ' flirting with the edge of the envelope ' .... I feel so radical!!! as far as drawing the line....you bring up a good point... In a land of freedom, no one wants ANY lines drawn,,, (pursuit of happiness and all that....) and far be from me,,, to decide.. but sometimes we need to be protected...especially from things that harm us... Isn't that the purpose of the Food & Drug administration??? But humans do as they like and often do the opposite of what is best for them... Recommendations, and advisements.... " common sense bulletins" and notices, issued by Think tanks, Institutes of Learning, and Independent evaluators, knowledgeable in the respective subject matter, could go a long way, in leading our country and world, forward.... peace jt -
i saw today, where Soupy Sales has passed away... His smile and spontaneous comedy always brought me delight,, when i was kid, parked in front of the old motorola Black & White TV... His Pie in the Face routine, was perhaps the precursor to skydivng's "pieing of jumpers" whenever they reached any certain milestone... The news reported that Soupy took tens of thousands of pies to the face,,, on his Childrens Tv Show.... sometimes 3 or 4 at a time... He sang silly songs.. "Ba-Ka-La-Fa-Ka", and "Hey !! Do the Mouse",,, and had a few puppet "co-stars" like White Fang and Black Tooth, who were nothing more than a furry-gloved hand, with claws,,,,which appeared before the camera, while Soupy was doing one skit or another... He had another puppet pal, named Pookie who was also a regular....... A real nice guy and a Televison pioneer, back in the days of One camera, LIVE TV, shot on site in a studio, somewhere... SO????... who here Remembers??? Soupy Sales?? who does Not?? i DO and will continue to remember him. I'm singing the Mouse song, now, as i type this,, and that damn thing will probably be stuck in my head now,,, all day..!! R I P Soup............... jaytee

hmmmmmm i know nothing about the 'military' implications... but i wonder if maybe..... she is "with child", and that's why the wedding date has changed.... the other stuff is mostly a cover..... However,, I COULD be, completely WRONG.... ( wouldn't be the first time,,, won't be the last ) jt

I've seen that alot on first jumps...haven't you guys? that description just screams!!! tandem.... out of a tailgate.. and if there was video then she could have "re-experienced' that one dive , over and over again,,, to the point where she truly DOES believe that "she's done it a number of times"... NOW lets Get JAY Leno out to a DZ to make a few,,,, and THAT would be a positive thing for the sport.... jmy POPS 3935 36 hrs. 1281
