New jumper, still pretty fearful after 18 jumps
jimmytavino replied to souleil's topic in Introductions and Greets
Dear O.P. when entering into a new and especially an Exciting, "adventure" sport... it is always best to work with those who have been Trained, critiqued, approved and Certified !!! to teach others... If your S.O. doesn't yet meet these criteria he should gracefully step aside..... and YOU should insist on it... I have seen this scenario many a time... where an "experienced" jumper, Usually a guy, tries to "introduce " his GF or Wife, into the sport...But THEN overwhelms her, by disecting EVERY little thing concentrating on "fixing things" and failing to point out all the positives.... ( of which there can be many,, even on jumps that don't always go 100% perfect ) Sometimes the guy takes on the role of "mentor" whether He is capable or Not.. It often doesn't work out well for anyone... and can even lead to "off the Dz " issues, tension and disharmony.. no... it would be better for souleil to stick with Rated instructors, who would have less of a Personal Take, on things... Once you're settled and comfortable, there will be plenty of time for "sharing the air"..with your guy.... Providing that your freefall profiles,, size weight shape etc. ARE compatible... Talk to your instructors. but more importantly to your man,, ONLY do it gently... in case his ego might be fragile... good luck skydive safely jt -
welllllll .... BOTH , for cryin' out Loud !!!!! Both...

...first of all...... ALL you finished, in one WHOLE day of Laying bricks was 1,400/? hell i worked with some masons,, that could have done THAT, by lunch time... Maybe.....If a "non -USA citizen" Laborer was working with you,, ( Guatemalen(sp) perhaps ) mixing mortar and supplying bricks.... you mightta done 2,000..... Anyway. i do feel your pain, but Hell.... that's just part of American Life today.. I go into ANY store, and there are people there, speaking languages OTHER than English...Sometimes they are customers, sometimes they are Staff!! what are ya' gonna do???? i just ignore it, take care of my purchases and feel, that I'm Glad that i have cash to spend.. ( from workin'), a place to exchange it for food, goods, etc. and then a semi-reliable vehicle , in which to drive to my "boughten and Paid for " !! HOME.... I wouldn't wanna be on welfare. or food stamps... would You??? I see from your profile DanJohnson that you joined this little "discussion group" quite recently..... well here is a friendly "heads-up"... chill out.. EXPECT the sort of responses which YOUR very post,,, elicited.. SHOW at least SOME respect for those on here,, who are making comments.... THEY are Not,,," some kinda freakin' Novice" to these forums and are equally entitled to expres their thoughts, as you are.....MOST of them have been around the block, a time or two.. especially the ones whom YOU dismiss, with poorly concealed distain... THIS is speakers corner...Pal. and while I try to stay light hearted and cordial in ALL these forums, I have learned that this one,, ( SC ) plays by slightly more Grown Up ground rules......so be prepared, be forewarned.. As to Your original question.. The store manager is probably Already working 12 or 14 hour days.. He or She cares little about How people pay, or if they have to wait on line for an extra minute or three... But Sure... you can Add to His/Her workload, and aggravation factor, by complaining... or else NOT

it's supposed to give you a sense of Accomplishment... no one promises a rush...... A jumper gets to enjoy THAT... after learning a thing or two and successfully carrying out a few jumps...

"Kill Him" "Kill the Umpire,"!!! shouted someone on the stand " "and it's likely they'd HAVE killed him, had not Casey raised a hand" With a sign of Christian Charity, great Casey's visage shown. He stilled the rising tumult... He bade the game go On. He signaled to the pitcher and once more the spheriod flew. But casy STILL ignored it,,, and the Umprire said "Strike two " .. "Fraud "!! cried the maddened thousands, and the echo answered "Fraud " !!!" but one scornful look from Casey and the Audience was Awed.. They saw his face grow stern and cold they saw his muscles strain, and they KNEW that CASEY wouldn't let that ball go by, again... And NOW... the pitcher Holds the balll... and NOW .. he lets it go ... and NOW ... the air is shattered by the F O R C E of Caseys' Blow !!!!! Ahhhh somewhere in this favored land the sun is shining bright. A band is playing somewhere and somewhere hearts are light..

there was a bible story.. about how one, "worker " was upset because another "worker " was paid more...... The lesson(s)?? Life is NOT always equitable..... get over it... AND, Each person may negotiate for ThemSELVES... within the context of the system in which they work... one on one, with the Person who "writes the check". Deliver what's expected and maybe a little bit MORE.... and Hope that your efforts are noticed... When that happens, and appreciation is verbalized,,, that creates job satisfaction for the worker...

Is # 2... the pedal powered Gossamer Albatross???? VERY lightweight. transparent skin. a "capsule" shaped fuselage/cabin wherein a world level bicyclist would sit.. and Pedal ... sending power to the props.. i believe it skimmed across the English Channel at one point,, no higher than 100 feet off the water.... but i could be mistaken..... jt

true enough..... ReHab and ReLapse , too often, go hand in hand..... what's Left then????? Maybe real intervention,,, like monitoring the Ill person 24 - 7 and then physically intervening.. when the bottle goes to the lips... or when the heavy duty, physically debilitating drugs are reached for...the backlash could be Bad...as the subject will sometimes fight for "their right" to do as they please.....But it could still be worth the chance,,in the hopes that they WOULD respond.... Recreational is one thing... but the grip of some intoxicants can be overwhelming.... Does treating the addict like a child, and denying them the use of such substances, work???? Could the accumulated wear and tear of hard partying have worn out her cardiac system??? It seems that details are only now, emerging.... maybe some answers will be found j

sad.... what a shame.... could it be??? that due to her poor physical condition, and dangerously LOW body weight...??? she may have been more vulnerable to the negative effects of "combining" alcohol and ANY "designer" drug???? photos seems to show that as of late, she was skinny as can be, Emaciated, actually.... AND so, NOT likely to resist the deadly combination(s),, as she may have done,,, in the past.... was there NO One in her inner circle... who could have seen this coming?????? I bet there WAS... yet , as is often the case, people hesitate to "speak up" and THAT too,,,,,, is sad.... never any easy answers...

Any latebloomers to skydiving?
jimmytavino replied to Namowal's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
i've been at it for almost 4 Decades,,, but i still have Yet To Bloom !!!!!! However i AM enjoying the ride and i try to carry On, carryin' On.... skymama, " reserved" is a fine way to be... But showing your kids that Adventure and Excitement CAN go hand in hand with caution,,,,,and common sense, is a very good example for your children.....I have a feeling that they are VERY proud of you.... Our sport IS a rare one,,, in that folks of alll ages,,,, IF they are in reasonable physical condition,, and IF they can "keep their wits about them"... CAN learn how to safely participate in the sport.. Young AND Old.. Male And Female... it's a fantastic hobby/ sport , in that regard and often, latebloomers are the ones more likely to be in the position, time-wise and money -wise to become active in the sport...... -

Hell NO my friend !!!! i have Plenty of OTHER things to feel Guilty about..... but finally getting central air in our house, after 20 something years. is NOT one of them !!!!! the couple of window units,,, just weren't getting the job DONE... still,,, around here,,,,,,,we do NOT get temps in the 90s for the same extended lengths of time, like You folks.... and almost NEVER hit 100... I cannot fathom.... how those in Texas can TAKE it !!!!especially Day after DAY !!! true enough about automobile AC... that must ALSo add to the outdoor temps... HOW much of this "people generated" warm air rises Up and into the atmosphere??? a bunch i'd guess!!! stay COOL folks....
-
contribute to the oppressive heat conditions???? I see 90's all over the US Map today, and 100 and even 110's in the south and Over the Texas OK and New Mexico areas.. i KNOW that summer = Heat ! but i was wondering just HOW MUCH does the exhaust coming off AC units... especially rooftop mounted systems of HUGE capacity.. contribute to RAISIng the ambient air temps,, in the first place. have never measured to see what the temperatures ARe for the exhausts from an AC machine, but i have to believe that as we cool interior space, we HEAT up the exterior, which then requires More cooling and so the cycle just continues.. Anyone able to guess what percentage of commercial Buildings in The South use Central Air??? ( i would guess over 75 % , maybe More ) and any guess about the percentage of AC use in residential properties???? i know it's a function of economics but do Poorer folks have to endure ADDED discomfort, cause the AC units in their areas are ADDING heat.. while they cool living/working space..?/ Could be that exhaust heat is inconsequential, but maybe the heat in the outdoor air is generated by MORE than just Mother NAture... comments???/ jmy

Who remembers their Free lottery number
jimmytavino replied to Krip's topic in Skydiving History & Trivia
sure do.. i was in college... it was early 1972... "student deferments" had been eliminated.... i lived on a floor in a dorm, which had mostly upperclassmen,,, but there were 5 or 6 freshmen, all of whom would be affected by the lottery draw...... one by one birthdays and corresponding lottery #'s came up... one guy got something in the low 300's most of the others were in the high 200's...THEY all went to the Rathskeller to celebrate Me????? I waited it out.... well MY birthday came up # 16... Go Figure !!!! i was healthy, in decent shape, Quite likely to PASS a pre-induction physical,,, and NERVOUS.... Really preferred to STAY in school..... anyway I received a notice to report for that physical in NYC, sometime in sept... wrote back to say.. "i'm in college, 375 miles AWAY... can't make it." they responded, Ok sit tight.. we'll re-schedule you to someplace in Buffalo.... Then in Dec of '72 got the new notice, borrowed a roommates van,, drove into rochester. where they put us on a bus to Buffalo.. and bascially spent the rest of the day "Qualifying" for induction.... Was classified 1A. went back to school.. to wait for the draft notice... Within ONE month,,,, Nixon "ended" the draft.... and i was never called... I had started jumping in sept of '72 and so was happy to finish college and to continue jumping.... AS A CIVILIAN !!! -

Dark Knight skydiving mishap~
jimmytavino replied to airtwardo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
could this have been a case where the MOVIE Director says ,, "Get the shot" " do it Now", "we're on a schedule".... "i don't CARE about "winds" ".. " are you professional skydivers,,,??? or Not "?? of course the winds may have come up suddenly,, but except for a canopy collapse,,, i'd hope that most "stunt jumpers" should be able to AVOID a roof !!! glad he's ok... jmy -
Case dismissed against woman arrested while videotaping police
jimmytavino replied to ryoder's topic in Speakers Corner
i live in a suburb just north of The City of Rochester... the police in this City have ONE helluva a P I T A job to do...... parts of the city are a mess.. with open air drug sales, Street corner loitering,,,vandalism and petty crime is abundant. Some People who have No licenses No insurance, and Not much to contibute to society are running around,,,in a "borrowed car" 'freelancing" and selling /doing whatever they feel they can... to get by. The Cops here are well trained, have seen it all and are basically trying to deal with a citizenship which has decided it will be Un cooperative whenever possible. We had a teenager Shoot a Cop IN the HEAd... last year... with a small caliber rifle FROm " a house down the block".. when canvassed.. " Nobody Knew ANYthing, SAW ANYthing, HEard anything .... The cop survived after immediate surgery, but will NEVER be right... ( Think Gabrielle Gifford,, only without the national media attention THAT case has recieved..) the kid,,, a 16 year old, who after MAny issues at school,, was on "in Home suspension" and had access to weapons... He WAS eventually discovered... tried and found guilty.... The Police are understandably On edge, whenever they make a stop ANywhere in the city... This woman DOES have the "right " to stand in her yard with a video camera.. but in my opinion also has The "responsibility" to comply with the request made by the Cop.. The Chief of Police, indicated that this wasn't just a routine traffic stop...( the woman had decided herself that it was a "simple matter " of racial profiling,,, because the driver was black....) In fact, the driver was KNOWN to police, to have gang affiliations, past problems, and had two other 'friends' in the car.. It was night time. The cops were following proper protocol. The woman could be applauded for being a Diligent Citizen , but SHE is ALSO known to police as " a community activist"... ( not just some Random resident...) While her intentions may have been innocent and seemingly benign.. once the Police asked her to desist... and she refused.... then i guess "technically" by the book.. that became "Obstruction of Justice".... I was impressed with the professionalism and restraint used by the Officer(s).... after much to do,,,, the case was thrown out..... However, Dismissal,,,,, does not mean Innocent... while i applaud a persons desire to be Active in the community, and to try to foster change.... She may have been more effective,,,, by choosing some other means to do it.... Must be there was "Nuthin' Good , on TV that night"..... jimmy rochester Ny
