  1. another bit of evidence that "Flying the Friendly Skies" is not quite like it used to be. Give someone a position of 'authority' and once in a while these sort of things will happen. However, simple common sense on the part of all passengers is helpful too... Regardless of the Girls' sense of Fashion... that design was BOUND to draw someone's interest.. and TSA folks...tend to be "by the Book".. not happy about it???? take the train..... i do not condone what the TSA person did..and DO see it as an example that "Idiocy Abounds"... but that seems to be where we are going... the last decade or so... best part of that link?? something Else on that page , about the worlds Largest insect!! check it out. hahaha
  2. meals on Wheels everywhere, does a fine job to help those who have reached a point in life where mobility is an issue, where friends and family numbers have lessened and where folks Really DO need some good nutrition AND neeed someone to "check in on them " each day.. It's a win -win situation. the folks who are helped, look forward to the daily visit,,, as brief as it might be. and the Folks who Work with the program are able to enjoy some sense of Giving,,, of looking out for their fellow community members and of helping out,,,, alll year long... you made a wise choice skymama to look into that program, in your area.. This season and all year long.... it's better to Give,, than to receive
  3. good point about not letting things get worse and also about not burning alt. "fixing something" I towed a pilot chute back in the transition days of gear,,,, on a piggyback with belly band pouch and hand deployed PC from that pouch. well the bridle ran from the pouch , around the right hip, into the bottom right corner of the container, and on up under a flap to the single pin closure. ( steel pin nylon closing loop) I twisted the belly band when gearing up and found out about it one second after i pulled... which was plenty under 3,000 feet. as that was the practice of the times, Pre-AADs... anyway the twist in the webbing effectively trapped the bridle but the pull from the pilot chute was strong... strong enough to pull the bridle through the twist, and to extract my closing pin.. container is now open... i'm hanging head down AND feet down from my hip AND i'm spinning. I sense the pull from my hip and quickly snatch at it, thinking the bridle was caught on a buckle or on the corner of the container.. quickly glance down and the pea gravel was under me.... and it was Big... Like i'm used to seeing, as i'm setting up on an accuracy shot... whoa... i squared away in the air, getting flat and FELT.. what i realized was my Main D Bag.. Hitting me on the backs of my thighs I immediately thought.. " it's clear Right NOW!!!! over my shoulder blades!! and i pulled my blast handle reserve activation device!! Bang!!!! i stop...hummmph... i'm under an open and intact 26 foot round reserve... i'm about 600 feet off the ground.. and i just ended a very interesting freefall... I look around me and i see suspension lines,,, apex lines from my round main.. and a main d bag hanging just under my feet... still closed by 2 or maybe 3 line stows.. i carefully drew the bag to myself, and stuffed it between my legs.. landed , but not a standing landing.. 15 or 20 seconds later... felt like i did well , NOT to just PULL reserve.. while i was head low AND spinning.. and to rather CREATE the open channel of air above my reserve container by using a second and a halfs worth of altitude to better enhance my changes of getting a good reserve your mileage may vary... jmy a 3914 nscr 1817 4 stack 930
  4. Just more good ole family values from the GOP... you expected more?? Expected more? Nein, nein, nein. Very good..... speaking of which, i never heard for sure nor inquired deeply enough to find out.... But would that tax plan be on TOP of the 8 % sales tax.. we already pay ??? and on top of the LOTTSA taxes we already pay on gasoline??? i think ... maybe Ron Paul seems Able... Could be, he can "Kill Cain"..... and step ahead of all the other candidates... who seem to me to be much of the same... ... and that hasn't been working too well lately... Now Has it????? just under 12 months away.. we'll be watching
  5. Some powerful men in business and politics tend to behave in this same sort of similar way...... i.e. behaving like they are a bachelor... have we Not seen enough, in the last 3 or 4 decades to Learn THAT????? Not every man in such a position, but many... That Mr. Cains personal life seems to show a 'rambunctious' attitude, toward women, will not bode well with many... he is temporary news fodder and will throw away millions to do little more than Open all the closet doors,, of his past... i hope he's got alot of buckeroos on hand. to carry on afterwards...( which might be shortly after New hampshire..) and if his marriage will survive. Ron Paul??? have noted him since the last pre election efforts. LIKE what he says... HOW he says it and the straightforward common sense way he delivers his message..he seems to receive sooo much less press... and that Better Change. or we could be in for just tooo much More of the same..... I wish Pres. Obama could have done things better, but he was handed the biggest MESS!!!! we never could have imagined.. thanks to G W B McCain would have done No better... I voted for Neither.. in the last election, ( though i DID vote) Ron Paul needs to be considered... He could be a real Diamond in the rough, and a potential leader... imho Gingrich ?? Pleeeeze... how much of an insider can your GET??? He is the type of Politician we need to TOSS!!!!!! wasn't he already part of t he problem.. ( congress) when all this chaos began ?!!!! and now the G O P may expect the citizenship of this country to welcome back Newt??? " man you're lvin' in the past " it's OVER for Newt"....
  6. leave it alone it can fly..... and anything that can fly is OK in my book...( i truly believe that Birds are a higher order of animal than mankind...) ( but THATS another discusssion) anyway ,,, try to find something else with which to practice your riflemanship. might be good to work now, to help prevent any such need.... to "have to use them ( hunting skills)and have to survive off the land ". Are you expecting some t ype of calamity, or collapse of society?? ( And THAT's another discussion too... ) whether we like it or not,,,,,it IS the 21st century, not the 18th or 19th.. though (sigh) there are many among us whose personalities could be better suited to living in centuries past..... myself included only drawback??? NO skydiving....
  7. i visited EMS in 2010 and made a half a dozen jumps there.. VERY nice DZ... i liked many things about it...if it happens to be nearby to you... that is a good thing. skydive safely jmy
  8. be sure your weight is forward when on the step. rock forward over the strut and launch. your leg wants to push off the step before your hands leave the strut so that for a split second.... you're like a bedsheet on a clothesline,,, blowing in the wind.... Which There WILL be.... ( "wind " that is...) you're ON the ball of your left foot... so that you can also kick a bit to the right as you go... soas to limit any likelihood of getting into the step . might help to get your Chin UP.. Might help to consciously LOOK at the Airplane... as you leave. Might help to get your hands down in a delta position,,off your hips, rather than to put them above your head in some sort of an exaggerated arch... As you clear the relative wind of the prop blast and start to fall , you can then ease your hands and arms forward... The "poised exit" is the classic.. especially for anyone who came up through static line... learning it, so that you're comfortable out there is a good thing. balance + relaxation = success ask you instructors to help you fine tune things,,, based on your body size, shape and weight... good luck. jmy
  9. Cheap is good if i'm buyin' a lawnmower Cheap is good if i'm going to the grocery store...
  10. QuoteJimmy...I like it. You're thinkin'. Somewhat more so than most 'Merican sheeple.*** ...while my post is based on an "off the top of my head" idea...i will agree that trying to make it Happen,,, WOULD be complex... the concept has mostly evolved, as i've watched those in the Entertainment Industry, make millions and millions...year after year....In lots of cases working for less than 6 months of THAT year, ( think Pro athletes) and from watching Actors and musicians who only need to produce one or two movies or records a year,,,, Am i jealous?? not really...good for themm... I just think that in the real scheme of things, while entertaining, their work is NOT crucial to societies' well being...and it wouldn't hurt, for them to contribute more...... As for allllll other occupations... YES it would be tough to place a Value on it since values are so subjective.. BUT an independent and impartial review might be able to categorize work into 3 or 4 levels. 1. service workers, foundation level medical workers, educators, hell..... even day-care operators... low paying til one has endured years and years of hard work, at which point SOME folks start to earn a decent wage. Entry level jobs in these sectors pay very little. So tax them in a moderate way. Use those funds for education, libraries, and to reduce property taxes for those who Own homes and commercial buildings. 2. manufacturing workers, factory workers, those who "punch in" and "punch out" , who work on lines and in assembly facilities and who do somewhat monotonous jobs... Tax them at a rate which still allows for a good net wage... They can simply come in and then LEave each day. NOT having to worry about things the way UPPER Management May, hopefully doing their work soas to insure the continued EXISTENCE of their company but basically "leaving their work, AT work", when quitting time rolls around... USE those funds to pay for infra-structure repair , interstate highways, and maybe high speed train service tracks, switches, stations etc. 3. bankers, stock market managers, C E O s, Upper managment...College Administrators and all TENURED college professors... Those who do "not much" to get their hands dirty, but rake in the big bucks , off the backs of underlings.. tax them pretty heavily. Use THAT money to fund the defense department... 4. professional athletes, actors, musicians who surpass 2 million bucks a year. tax them REAL heavy and earmark those funds for Arts and sports at the local level, dovetailed into use of ALL public school buildings. Start programs where members of a community can USE the public school facilities, for excersize, for study, for Arts,, during OFF school, hours. ( EVERYONE who participates in such useage WILL sign and adhere to a waiver of their right to sue, should they turn an ankle on the hoops court, or should they, in some other way, be injured...) Why should we have to pay a memebership fee, at a Health club??? when we have (usually ) top level facilities right in our own Towns which have been Paid for, with Our property Taxes... yes yes. i Know that this entire concept is subject to all sorts of scrutiny and critique, and could be tough to implement. Still if structured FAirly,,, very few could really dispute the possibility of it's working... Don't like the upper levels of taxation??? choose a different career. wanna pitch in, AND save on income taxes??? choose a service career. As for 'wanna be ' actors,,, whose enthusiasm and drive,,,, i would NEVER want to squelch... at least WHILE they are being a waiter, or working retail somewhere, or taking on part time work... at least for THOSE wages,, they are NOT being taxed so heavily... i suppose it comes down to. " From those , to whom Much has been Given,,,, MUCH is required"..... i appreciate all the comments made here, and of course, " it's ALWAYS never simple"... but some type of parity would go a long way towards establishing a better sense,, That "we're ALL in this together" and could help eliminate the wide ranging disparity which is leading this country AND the entire world down a slick and slippery slope... all because of economics.. IMHO certainly these points here can be subjected to other forum members picking them apart, one by one, and in SC i'd expect as much.... But i'd challenge everyone who comments,,,, to suggest a revision, or an alternative, to what i've suggested,,, rather than just blasting it... thanks. jmy.....out.
  11. .... i'm not sure why this approach has not been considered sooner... but in this country ( USA ) we keep fighting about percentages and about rich vs. non rich and about needing to bolster the "revenues" so as to cover the "expenses".... but how about.. ??? an income tax system that varies.... based on the TYPE of income.. and How it's generated.... I have felt for many years now, that income which is made in the " Artistic Field " such as music, movies, TV and Professional Sports,, might be taxed differently ,( i. e. More heavily ) than say, income made in the "Service to others" field, such as public service jobs, teaching, nursing, fire fighting, and yes even Police Service.. The former "jobs" create HUGE wealth for folks like actors, musicians, pro sports types... who then are in a position to hire tax attorneys and accountants to "work the system" so that they pay as LITTLE as possible.... Case in point ,, i see Ashton & Demi are gonna split 290 Million Bucks.... Why not pop those folks ,,,at say, a 40 or 50 % rate..... They will still "live the good life". will still jet -set all over the world, at their leisure, and will continue to want for Nothing"... USE those specific revenues to earmark funding of the ARTS...and Sports, at the regional and local levels... I'd rather see, theater, sports, and the arts get funded right here in our communities, allowing More people to take part, in such activities... Right now,, the general populations' level of such activity, is basically limited to BUYING tickets, CDs DVDs. and living their artistic dreams through someone ELSE....OR engaging in them, at Their own Expense of time AND $$$$$ and making not a Dime from it... Tax hard working teachers, and Garbage men, and certain other professsions at a lower rate.....or hell.... at ZERO.... this would encourage MORE people to enter into those fields.. would leave those folks more NET income to spend in their own communities to "spur the economy"...and would offset annual salaries which are waaay below the true VALUE of their work... Who adds more to the well being of our society.. the CEOS and BAnkers?? who shuffle the money of OTHERS?? and then take a BIG slice of it as "earned" commission? The attorneys who mostly Insert themselves into the business of others... and TAke a BIG slice...?? and rate themselves at Hundreds of dollars / Hour?? or the Medical "understructure",, Nurses, aides, attendants, (NOT the Doctors,,) who create the foundation upon which the "big Shot" surgeons, specialists, and "experts" are able to ply their trade ? and make millions?? What about The Teachers, the factory workers, the ditch diggers, and the laborers? who day in and day out handle the major and minor aspects of "keeping things on track "???in our daily lives... Who IS more important?? i know that such a plan would be quite complicated and maybe not so widely accepted but the current plan is equally complicated and not widely accepted... try going to IRS.gov..... page after page after page of confusing and complex wording.... I often wonder, what ever happened to the concept of "the Starving Artist" who labors at his or her craft,, for Nothing... lives in a creative but penniless way.. for the LOVE of the craft at which they may toil.. Instead We have elevated so many of those folks ( actors musicians, athletes) to a point of Regal Stature,, irrespective of their Morals, ethics, behavior, and way of life...much of which is questionable... it might be about time that some things changed.... i dunno....... thoughts??????
  12. i'd agree... about "in the field fine tuning".. though i'd guess some sort of REAL testing HAD occured before Ram Airs were sold to the general public... i was VERY active in jumping then and was blessed to have a wonderful Dz 20 minutes away. we alll followed with interest... some guys had a voracious interest.. as the change to squares began.. In direct contrast to the HOT -To- GO jumpers, who HAdda have one now, were skydivers like me... scaredy cats i guess...who took a "wait & see approach" Like some., i too,, was not in a hurry Fix anything!!. i knew how to spot, was comfortable and pretty capable with a round , and could usually find the landing area/ peas. But YES alot of jumpers got hurt, or worse.. many sure as hell scared themselves at one time or another, and most had a cutaway,,or two to show for their efforts. My 1st square jump and maybe the next 30 were on ParaPlane Clouds. Rings and Ropes. 2 MA 1 pilot chutes from a minis system or a styleMaster rig...ONE Jump on a Strato-Star a few on a Prar Foil 181 i think. (borrowed from pals) never a mal as for owning
  13. speaking of tossing various items out of the plane... one time we chucked a big Rock out.. just to watch it... we were at 2 grand or so.. with 4 of us laying in the cabin, in various positions soas to get our heads out the door.... AWAY it went. it was about the size of a good sized dinner plate, and 8 or 10 iches thick !! maybe 30 pounds... it rocketed away!!!!... over a VERY remote UNoccupied area, and spanked the ground BIG TIME.... It remined me of a Road Runner - Wile E Coyote impact.. with a visible PUFF of air.. and a cloud of dust, rippling out away from the crater. like concentric rings on a Pond..... neat visual... Another time a jumper who was a Photographer had an SLR camera that he didn't like and wasn't using much. It was insured for damage, and he wanted to update his gear.. so he figured, "if it Falls,,,, and breaks",, the insurance will provide him with the $$$$$ to buy something "better"... sooooo Up in the 180 we Go he ties a W D I streamer onto it, so we can follow it.... "hires" a kid from the DZ to watch from the ground, and then head out to "recover it" and everything is Good to Go........well there was a real scramble to "get ON that load" once the word got out... and i was able to get a slot.. So anyway UP we go and the guy decides,, higher is Better.. ( for camera smashing momentum) so tell the pilot,, "gimme FIVE grand "... once again all heads have a piece of the door and were ready for " The Show".... he pitches that BadBoy OUT the door... just south of the DZ and over the top of a wide open field.. ONLY Problem???!!!!! the field is adjacent to a deep and nasty swampy area covered in water, and muck and brush and a few trees.... well with the "carry" from our forward momentum,, AND maybe a tailwind, and Maybe some Karma for this dude who was trying to rip off his insurance co...
  14. sensible advice.. only while it Is possible to catch and hold a 'skyball' or some smaller object... there's NO way that anyone will likely be able to hold a Watermelon Or pumpkin, once deployment begins and the jumper hits line stretch.... imho right???? jt
  15. Exactly... good for you deadwood i like that style..... with age comes wisdom and if certain things are inevitable, like loss of some agility etc etc it's good to approach that, as you have done with a well thought out game plan... however, i'd suggest ONE slight change
  16. thanks for the clip hwt that Man has a manner which is straight forward and refreshing.. A MUST See link. he's faaar from a fruitcake quade, and you do him a disservice to label him as such. my earlier post was somewhat tongue in cheek as might have been noted by my inclusion of Jesse as a V P choice... Besdies, the whole concept of ANY one "with their finger on the button", is dated and more from hollywood,,,, than from reality. The fact that NO nuclear bomb detonation, ( save for "testing" ) has occured on this planet since the 40s, is not by happenstance.... Tooo many checks and balances and practical physical actions, would need to be co-ordinated, for such an explosion to happen. NO single individual has that power. Not sure of others,, and while i vote EVERY election day, i have not cast a vote for the Position of P O T U S , since 1990. The Status Quo of our Political System,,, during those years and even BEFORE then, has only offered us poor choices, paper candidates, or "The lesser of two evils". so i abstain. But i Don't Wanna abstain.. I want decent and substantial candidates... Some sort of Change.. REAL Change is needed... Maybe this Guy fits the role. And so, I wish him well and will continue to listen to what he has to say.. The election is TWELVE Months away.. I hope by then, that we can " weed out all the Chumps !!!", such as the current crop of debaters... more like debasers.. PS who is runnin' Texas, while this Perry dude is out glad-handing people????don't get me started..... on the Last Texas Gov whom we all misunderestimated... he was waaaay worse than we first feared, when HE came outta Texas with that grin and "what, me WORRY" ??? sort of style... anyway watch the clip from hwt jmy
  17. sometimes fruitcake is "just the ticket".. i'd vote for Ron Paul and as long as we're on fruitcakes.......Jesse Ventura could be his Veep. I'd vote for HIM too.... sometimes you just GOTTA go,,, "fringe"..... for sure, the same old same old just ain't cuttin' it.... (Look at the last 12 years... ) jt
  18. actually, quite the opposite started slow. continued slow.... made almost a thousand jumps on a round main.... it took until jump # 279 to hit ONE hour of freefall, which occured in May of 1975 didn't get a 4 way until my jump # 300... and THAT was at a time when there was NOTHING else to do BUT Rw...... also at a time when we were sorta "self taught".. there was a fair bit of written material about canopy control, gear choices, spotting, EM's etc... but it wasn't until Pat Works book, The Art of Freefall Relative Work... that concepts like the relative wind, sequential, formations other than a star....came to be. I jumped mostly C 180s and C 182s, with an occasional visit to a Dz that had a 206... But seldom went above Seven-Five and at a time when the D license requirements included a certain number of "60 second delays" i was qualified for years.. before reaching THAT goal... I Know,,,,, I should have gone to where there were DC3s' or loadstars, or beeches that routinely climbed that high....but i didn't... i was "happy at home" and always working, so i had limited vacation time, to skydive.. always was cautious and so when ram airs came around, i was tentative... saw lots of my pals getting slammed, at opening, or getting hurt on landing.... waited a good long time til i "got a para-plane cloud" Regular jumping and staying current , has allowed me to develop the confidence to skydive the way i like. and the wisdom to recognize that 'There ARE dangers out there" and that "it's easy to get sucked in..to things that are beyond one's current abilities".. I've seen that, alot..... I tend to UP size rather than downsize,,, and feel that i fly plenty Fast enough, without having to go screaming around the sky..I can land my parachute pretty much ANYwhere,,, On or Off the DZ even now, have never done a 270 to landing, let alone a 540.. and seldom fly my canopy with front risers.... so i sure did NOT progress too fast slow and steady has worked just fine , for me... but, to each his own The sport allows each of us to progress independently and at whatever pace we choose....as well as in whatever Discipline(s) we like. me???? i just like being on a DZ, sharing the fun and energy with those around me, getting on the manifest, a whatever pace i choose, and relishing each and every jump made alone, or with friends... I've also always had a certain level of respect and maybe fear,,,,,about jumping and that has kept me within certain sensible limits... I'm glad about that Now.....as it has allowed me to stay WITH the sport... even as i watch soooo many "hot-shot" types.....either get hurt, or simply fade away.....like the sun sinking below the horizon.. while I am completing MY canopy descent to the pea gravel on yet another memorable sunset load !!!
  19. i gave up having that nagging sense that "something was missing"... The arrival of one child and then a couple of years later, ANOTHER....brought Joy, happiness, AND a sense of accomplishment and maturity... Parenthood will DO that to you... so i guess i gave up some of the freedom of youth, and the ability to absolutely "come and go as i pleased"..... but That was OK..... i was happy to do it.. The payback has far Out weighed the sacrifices and being able to see Two Grown-Ups.. today, who are STILL "My Little Ones".. as they blossom into productive and happy people has been a continuing JOY to Nancy & to me.. ( shah Baby,,,, ya' don't Know WHAT you're missing.....) signed, The Pater Familius

  22. perhaps you are correct....about the wife... and so.. i regret my earlier words, implicating her as a co-abuser..... my comments were spontaneous and tinged with anger, at Both parents...... so maybe the wife is NOT a P.O.S. but the man sure IS...... jmy.....out.
