  1. Nice!!! i remember the PCA patch and i like how you teamed it up with the uspa patch which matched it,,,(triangles).. the nscr is a favorite too.. i have always loved the colors and the design... I was lucky enough to earn my SCR in 1976 and so received a red white and blue "bicentennial" SCR patch..
  2. is there Any reason why the latching procedure can't Also include a secondary ( back up ) method??? such as a Bungee wrapped securely to keep the door UP... if for some reason the "pin" comes free??? I am guessing that the door stays OPEn for the entire descent and so it would matter little if there are 2 points of connection..... When the next load boards... if they HAVE to release the pin anyway....to Lower the door.... can't the back up system also be released at THAT time??? yes?? No??? just wonderin'
  3. Re: Aren't WE ??? NO..... not everyone here is stuck on that sorta sadness....... maybe some.....but there are MAny who are Life Livers!!! and try to absorb all that is out there to experience.... we CAN get sad.... when we lose someone... but should never let it get to the level of "morbid"... Rather, we need to celebrate the joy of that life . And then accept the role of carrying THAt loved ones energy with us..... during our rides to altitude... and when we move to the door. and as we Are IN the MOMENT of any skydive we will enjoy, after that person is gone..... carrying them WITH us..... helps to ease the pain and turn the loss into Gain... jmy
  4. there is No "no matter what" in skydiving.... it's a dynamic sport of which we are just a part.... anything can happen. jmy
  5. being a husband AND a Father... DEMANDS a certain bit of sacrifice.... and IF the Missus is uncertain about the idea... ( For WHATEVER reason ).... the best approach (imho ) would be to: 1. Maintain the Domestic Tranquility !!!!! 2. be patient...years from now ...maybe.... you make a jump WITH her or WITH one of your Kids !! 3. Honor the wishes of The Mother of YOUR Children... NOT everyone gets to skydive... it's (sadly ) just the way it Is... Good ideas from others, about tunnel time. then the Kids.. especially if they are young.. can be RIGHT there watching , as the smile on your face Grows!!!! good Luck jmy a 3914 d 12122
  6. good for You!!!!.... that you"did every one of those things" YOU made a career choice and so why Wouldn't you do those things?? however you don't KNOW me... and so you HAVE incorrectly attributed certain things TO me, that are flat out wrong.. i resent No one...I am a Husband to a teacher a Father to a teacher a Brother to a teacher an Uncle to about 6 teachers and so i Have first hand knowledge of the effort and Strength that it takes to follow that calling....( elementary and secondary education) That being said .. I DO feel that Higher Education (College and University Level) has lost some of it's cache'... That it no longer 'delivers'. That the spiraling costs may NOT justify the uncertainty of benefitting from said 'education', that graduates no longer enjoy the prestige and assurance of employment, as in the past.. and that YES.... lots of folks in University level Academia.. have it EASY.....Working waaay less that the hours which you state.... Just because i point out some Facts which may touch a nerve in you.... you may NOT label me as resentful.. and you may NOT claim that i hold anyone in contempt.... ...because Neither statement which you made about me....is true... If you knew me.....you'd be laughing at the absurdity of your remarks... so how about You do what you Wanna Do for work... and I'll do what i wanna do...???Ok???? Damn..... if you're working 70 or 80 hours a week???? when can you find time to skydive????? anyway.. This thread is about unemployment statistics... and so we Both owe the readers and the original poster here, an apology for taking it so far out of the intended subject area. I commented about 'college students' only as they applied to the "working or non working public". Nothing more nothing less.... But since that topic is apparently close to your heart... you jumped all over it... and me.... we're done Pal. Have a great career. inspire many. work hard... skydive when you can and do it Safely... peace jamesTavino A 3914 D 12122
  7. i have never cared for the electoral college system of electing a President.. But i do Not know enough about such things to suggest an alternative... I HAVE sometimes wondered why we do NOT use Election Day Voting to determine certain POLICIES and / or procedures . a national Abortion or Right to Life policy???? Vote on it. Adjust the legal drinking age??/ vote on it. Increase or decrease taxation on the general public. ? vote on it. Clamp down on Wall Street Shenanigans?? Go to WAR??? decriminalize drugs and Tax them??? accept or reject certain infrastructure rehabs?? vote on them... Sure we have a legislative branch and a judicial branch, and they may create and diseminate Their idea of new LAW(s) even if it's contrary to the status quo....and is appealing only to certain "special interest groups" THEY should not DECIDE... for all the rest of us...and If the 200 year old constitution says otherwise... then draft some New amendments.. time to take Back the country from the politicians who have long ago demonstrated their ineptitude and their pandering to financial supporters... as for ow6s initial question.....being a new yorker i DO feel that my vote matters little... I will go to the polling location , as i do EVERY Election Day and will cast a vote in matters that i support and for candidates that i support, but like the last 3 Presidential elections... i must decline to cast my vote... as i feel NO connection or affinity to Either of these current candidates... God Bless us all and God HELP us all
  8. GD would you be so kind as to edit your post wherein you MISSPELLED my name... christsakes, it makes you sound " Uneducated ", ya' know??? and we wouldn't want THAT now,,, would we??? Tavino....it's real simple... It pisses me off to no end when people simply ADD an "R " 'cause it sounds to THEM........like Our Surname Needs it........i.e. TRAvino.. It's just basic reading comprehension... did they NOT teach that to you...in grad school????? jimmytavino edited to add...thank you GeorgiaDon for making that correction.. ....carry on.
  9. "once again" do you have me confused with someone else????? I have NO "anti-education bias" I am NOT resentful of ANYone........ where did you come UP with THAT????? i simply point out the reality as i see it... It seems to me that while being a student IS work and requires great dedication and effort.. it is NOT like a conventional J. O. B. wherein some ELSE pays YOU...In the RARE exception some students are granted "full ride" scholarships,, but even THEY are not assured of a job and a fair number of THEM wash out.... before completing ANY degree..... I and many of my friends and all my siblings, and our kids and many of our childrens contemporaries have ALL earned College level degrees..... Sadly it must be pointed out ...That Not All have found gainful employment ANywhere... let alone in "their field of expertise"... You must be involved in teaching or academia of some sort, to be taking such a stance and blaming ME for the sad situation which many find themselves facing... This thread is about unemployment and i mostly just pointed out that far too many folks can't find ANY.... When people PAY to go to school That is the opposite of EARNING money... NO????? True enough, they may be HOPING to see some kind of return but there are NO guarantees... please don't take one phrase from my text and use it to ( incorrectly ) label me...OK??? Higher education is an asset and a noble undertaking.. but that is not the focus of this thread.... Lucky are those,,like deans and professors and PhDs.... whose somewhat "cushy" livelihood is FUNDED by such an ass-backwards system... I wonder if such folks ever feel any RESPONSIBILTY towards those students whom they kick out the door at graduation, regardless of whether or not those folks can FIND a J O B .. what matters??? so long as the next batch of innocent naive freshmen are there to take their places... peace and good luck ( sorry normiss...... for the thread drift) jmy A 3914 POPS 3935
  10. if a true poll was taken...of EVERY person male and female in this country, between the ages of 18 and 62..... and ONE simple question was asked... " Do you Currently have a full time job??/ 36 hrs a week minimum"?? i would bet a thousand bucks that over 50 % would be forced to answer NO..... maybe 60 or 70% that would be asking EveryOne... those who have NEVER had a job. those who may have ONCE worked... but got "down sized", those who are lucky enough to Still be working, those who have quit and never found something else and those who have been laid off.....even if it was YEARS ago,,,, and never found anything else....being a "fulltime student" MAY be work.. buy (sorry)... it's NOT a job... I pay attention as i drive here and there,, and through various parts of the city and suburbs... and believe You me........There are a TON of people NOT working.......Not volunteering. Not doing anything to contribute to the well being of the community.... the unemployment "statistics" are so screwed up that whoever calculates them..... should be FIRED!!!!!!!
  11. You are a Good Sport, gal... and seem to take suggestions,,,Very well... BIG difference indeed between a C208 and a C206.... two little numbers but a completely different door, exit position and climb-out.. Your instructor(s) will certainly help you to get into position and to achieve an acceptable exit.... stay positive... enjoy.
  12. Hang in there, and try not to Over Analyze, tooo much.. power point, flash cards, etc especially about malfunctions can be creating an OVER emphasis on that one part of your instruction...ok?? think more about relaxing, breathing, envisioning Moving TO the door, and then the positive, energetic and smiley faced exit,, for the start of your adventure....YOU are more capable than you may think.... if your size ( dainty) results in a sense that your legstraps are loose, consider extra clothing, shorts, pants, sweatsuit, etc to increase the bulk UNDER your jumpsuit and simply cinch down the legstraps to the Max... But try not to allow that distraction to lead your mind, astray.....
  13. in todays tight economy, can i ask??? Who fronted you a loan of that amount???? and what was the collateral ??? Bank??? private lender?? wishing you the best in your career choice...
  14. is the chrome Ercoupe ??? the one you mentioned that YOU flew????
  15. i saw your home dz listed in your profile and visited there a while ago. It happened that there was no jumping at that time, of that day, but i did look at an aerial photo... it looked like a tight Dz in the daytime !!! let alone @ night. where was your 2 way, in the exit order ? were you short of the DZ or long? on the windline or offset? where did your partner land??? And the others who may have been on the load?? any moonlight?? that night??/
  16. did the gift of the rig.... include a Frapp Hat??? or has that been kept,,? as a souvenir of past good times??? nice gesture from a nice person from what i have come to believe is a SUPER nice Dz with great staff, funjumpers , and DZO... carry ON Y'all
  17. re: Calvin & Hobbes Snowman... you mean... Like THIS???
  18. hmmmm almost looked like THIS one... see attachment. (disregard incorrect wording on the pic. ) it's a picture of Yours truly, wearing an early vintage, locally made piggyback which many of us were using...mid 70s ( The TSO is "due any day Now" ) The rig was custom built , with R3's and bellyband pouch for hand deployed PC...Blast handle. 26 foot Navy reserve, a SQUARE Hand deploy pilot chute, Pulling a Round, (Fr. Pap ) outta the pack tray... Well first of all i nearly killed myself when i twisted the bellyband, went on an 8 way... pulled low, and because of the twist, Had a P C I T ... The PC pulled shear through the twist , extracting the main pin, and yanking about 3 feet of crown lines from my French Papillon up into the twist. The bag came out... but stayed closed.... i was momentarily head down AND feet down,,, and spinning... and sensed that i was suspended from my waist.. I snatched at the bridle thinking it was caught on a buckle.. and then took a look DOWN !!!!! Whooooaaaa... I was right OVER the pea gravel and it looked BIG !!!. like as big as when we set up for final during an accuracy run... OH MY !!!!! I didn't wanna just pour out my reserve so i got Flat and stable and FELT the main D bag drop down and HIT me on the back of the legs!!.. i thought to myself..."Right NOW" !!!and i fired the blasthandle ..... BAng!!! open reserve ! i was around 700 feet... it was only after landing that i found i had twisted the harness and never caught it... That night we stitched a plastic stiffener into bellyband to make a twist much more evident, in the future... BUTTTTTTT i guess that rig was NOT done trying to OFF me..... because a year or so later i did a H & P solo... where i did 2 backloops off the step. I pulled, got a normal open canopy and completed my descent... The R 3s (which as many of you know, consisted of some of the metal parts from a capewell and some webbing, and some eleastic and some velcro...) well the R3 on my right side..... Disconnected !!! upon my landing, and the riser Literally "ka-chink"!!!!! came off IN my HAnd,,, just as i touched down. !!!!! go figure !!! Yup. "flaring" was ONLY for the ram airs... and with a round, in any sorta wind,, we would Never pull both toggles to our knees!!!. instead we would fly wide open Into the wind, and then at touchdown, grab our rear risers and do a "chip -up" to "lessen the impact" of the landing rate of descent.... anyway, this time i was left standing there with a handful of riser!!!! whoa... must be that the fork from the release, which slid up to hold the lug of the riser hardware had enough tension throught the descent,,, that it stayed in place... until i Unloaded it by landing.....real glad it didn't let go BEFORE then... got a wonderhog with 3 rings, not too long thereafter... quite glad that i did NOT kill myself!!!
  19. i can get with the idea of such an exit....i was lucky enough to enjoy a Few of those @ Quincy!!! BUT it sure seems to me.... that 2,500 feet...is too low... if the plane can be set and trimmed, and "auto piloted" from that altitude... to impact.. It sure seems like the same can be done. from say 4,500 feet or 5,500 feet.. two -five leaves way to little time for any issues, such as a hesitant exit. or a hitch, in getting from the Front to the Rear..OR serious instability at exit... and IF the Pilot was the Passenger on That tandem which has been mentioned.... then it's really....way too low... IHMO jmy
  20. thanks Popsjumper JohnMitchell and Rick... and everyone... i do hope for a few more years... or Ten... have always tried to pay attention, encourage fellow jumpers, share the air and share some laughs..... because for ME... this IS a leisure time activity., a hobby, a sport i enjoy when my free time and the weather can get together...and make for good conditions to skydive... i try to follow the good example of certain jumpers and chuckle and sometimes cringe.. at the "less than good " examples of Others.... But DAmn sure>>. it's always been fun...and has been the pathway to MAny a Fine FINE friendship... and As for the future....??? i can put it into THREE words.... Ready Set... GO !!!! jmy 4 stack 930 nscr 1817 POPS 3935
  21. what She said... Re: Ercoupe .... wasn't that the sorta airplane that you could make turn ... by Just LEANING!!!!! i think they had a double rudder tail section...right??? and That too. is what i thought of . when i read "powder bombing "!!!! ( white flour ) !!! how cool that you have such memories...
