SCARY: CREEPS skydiving gadget is this for real?
peregrinerose replied to FIREFLYR's topic in The Bonfire
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7179294565&ssPageName=MERC_VI_ReBay_Pr4_PcY_BIN_Stores_IT[/url] Frankly, I think this one is infinitely more useful. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Is it OK if a dog poops in your yard?
peregrinerose replied to WatchYourStep's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't understand what the leash law has to do with it. When I'm out walking my dog, and he has to go, all the leashes in the world won't change that. It's exactly why a bag is always in my pocket. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Coach Rating Experiance Requirements too Low?
peregrinerose replied to jsaxton's topic in Instructors
Actually, I'll be in Dave's course in January for the rigger's ticket The problem that I see here, is that a coach does not have a license to learn alone, they have a license to teach. Just because someone can perform various tasks reasonably well does not mean that they have enough experience to teach those tasks to someone else. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Fly out to PA and I'll meet you at my office
-
Any eye doc, if you tell him what the problem is, will see you that day. Make it clear that you are not scheduling for an eye exam, you are scheduling for an acute eye problem. If you are seeing a black blob in your vision that moves with your eye, it has nothing to do with red eyes, contacts, or any other problem with the front part of the eye. It can be a posterior vitreous detachment, where the jelly inside your eyes detaches from the retina, pulls a bit of pigment with it, and you are seeing the shadow from the pigment. It's normal, common, and irritating as hell. However, there are other things that can cause the same symptom, like a retinal tear or detachment, and those can cause permanent vision loss if not treated promptly. A few other things can cause the black blob too, but these are the most common possibilities. The only way to tell the difference is to have your eyes dilated and have the doc take a look. Call the eye doc, go in asap just in case you do have a more serious cause that needs to be treated. If your doc's office is closed, most offices do have an emergency number listed on the answering machine. Call it and get seen. I'm always on call, and this is one of the eye problems that I do drop everything and get to the office for if called after hours for help. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Coach Rating Experiance Requirements too Low?
peregrinerose replied to jsaxton's topic in Instructors
I just passed 100 jumps and eventually would love to be a coach/AFF instructor. However, I think that to coach at 100 jumps is plain nuts. I don't feel that someone who has just learned a skill should be teaching it right away. With every jump, I realize just how much more I need to learn. Even if I was God's gift to flying at 100 jumps (which I am not!), the lack of general jumping experience would be limiting. You can only experience so many things in 100 jumps. If there are 100 jump number coaches, great for them. I personally don't feel my experience is sufficent to pursue this route. Yet. But there's no hurry either, the sky will be there another year, when I can give the student the expertise they deserve. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I did a tandem weighing in at 225lbs. I looked like a cow in a jump suit, so refused to jump for real until getting down to 145. A year after the tandem, I started AFF Now down to 135, aiming for 125. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Congrats!!! I hit my 100th on Sunday. An attempted 10 way that incorporated a mid-air kiss with my husband. What actually happened was an atoms and molecules jump with everyone taking everyone else out and the video guy laughing hysterically at all of us. A lot of fun, hilarious video, and that is really all that matters No pie yet here. I'm going to wear a rain parka for the next few weeks. My thank you's to coaches would be too long to count. They all know who they are though, or at least they better!! Congrats on your 100th too!! Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Skydiving without shoes....
peregrinerose replied to peckerhead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm basically always barefoot except at work, or while skydiving. Though I can walk across gravel with the thick callouses on my feet, there's just no way I'd risk even one landing that resulted in messy feet. I'd love to do it, but just don't think the risk/benefit ratio is worth it for me Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
BTW, I think that your poll doesn't match your question. 'Enriching your life' can be just about any facet of your life that makes it more complete, family, friends, skydiving, work, whatever else makes you tick. There's a big difference between something that adds to your present life and your poll that is more along the lines of 'are you obsessed by skydiving.' It enriches my life, but a lot of other things come first. I live at the DZ every weekend and all of my 100 jumps were made in the last 9 months. However, I could give it up in a heartbeat if necessary. It's a hobby, it enriches my life, but it doesn't define my life. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Yes, it enriches my life, but not from a hurtling myself out of an airplane part of it (though that's fun too). It's the awesome people that I meet each week at the DZ, the fun we have over beer every weekend, that whole DZ family thing. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I'm not an instructor of any form (obviously, with my brand new B license in hand!), but I do have a seizure disorder. 'Epilepsy' is an incredibly broad term and tells you absolutely nothing about the person's ability to do a tandem or any other jump. Grand mal seizures (the motor kind) is only one type of seizure. Most seizures are not grand mal. Some don't even lose consciousness, just sort of space out a bit. If you are concerned, ask the student to bring in a note from the neuro/family doc stating they are stable on meds, or do not have grand mal seizures. If possible, find out what triggers the seizures (if anything), what time of day they occur (if there is a trend, schedule tandems accordingly). Ask them if they get an 'aura' or anything that would signal an upcoming seizure, and make sure they've taken their meds as prescribed lately. If someone told me that someone with a seizure disorder should not be jumping out of airplanes, I'd be one bummed out camper (well, my neuro told me not to do it, but he thinks skydiving in general is idiocy). I haven't had a seizure in a year and started jumping about 9 months ago. I have never lost consciousness with a seizure anyway, I could have one right in front of you and you'd never know it was happening. But that is just me, and this should really be decided on a case by case basis. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Passed out under canopy: watch those leg straps!

Menstrual blood does not come from the bloodstream, it's been building up uterinely over the course of the previous few weeks, so would not have any effect on this. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I'm a 100 jump wonder and even I know that's a bad idea. I hope this is a troll post! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

My husband and I stopped by there on our way back from a funeral in MI. Everyone seemed so nice! Unfortunately the weather wasn't cooperative, so we didn't get to jump, but it was a nice detour from a long drive home. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Your life depends on that canopy, so might not be the best idea on earth to trade as a favor to a friend

Is religion the cause of all our problems?
peregrinerose replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
So just because I have no religious inclination, I therefore do not have ideas, philosophies, moralities, or upbringing? Even if religion was banished completely, you would still have different sects of people... divided by country/geography, culture, split on idealogical issues (abortion being right/wrong for example), political parties. It is division between groups of people, regardless of the barrier's name (religion or something else) that causes the problems. It is the lack of communication and understanding across that barrier. It is egocentrism, perhaps even some degree of insecurity that causes the 'I'm right and you're wrong' mentality. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I wasn't questioning their right to do so, as a private business, they can have whatever guidelines they want to, and jumpers can deal with it or jump elsewhere. Not a thing wrong with that at all. I was just curious if there was an actual logical reason as to why they would specify brand of reserve? Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
-
Is there a reason why a DZ would do this to begin with? It makes about as much sense as mandating a certain color of jump suit because they feel it is better for visibility or something. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Lapse time of Jumping...
peregrinerose replied to simplycomplex7's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I'm sure you don't want to hear this, but ask your doctor, there's no other way to find out since everyone is different. Chances are you'll be out of the sky for at least the 60 days, but ask. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Would you jump at a DZ with a wingloading rule?
peregrinerose replied to outlawphx's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I wouldn't just because different canopies are different, so wingloading doesn't really tell the whole story. Every jumper is different. There may be students who probably land better than I do, and 1000+ jumpers who don't land as well. Wing loadings are nice as guidelines, but I don't put a lot of stock in numbers being etched in stone criteria. Of course this is coming from an almost 100 jump wonder. Currently working on downsizing from a .9/1 to a 1/1 canopy. Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Les Mis is by far my favorite, makes me cry every time. But I also love Paint Your Wagon (nothing like seeing Clint Eastwood sing in the movie version). And Camelot. The last scene, where Arthur says "Each evening from September to September, before you fall asleep upon your cot, think back on all the tales that you remember, of Camelot" So sad. Pull sltitudes for recent student grads
peregrinerose replied to Pendejo's topic in Safety and Training
I'm still new, and want to pull at 3500 or higher, so prefer to break off at 5000 (bigger than 3 way) or 4500 for 2-3 way. The folks I jump with are always more experienced than I am, and the breakoff has always been set to what the least experienced jumper is comfortable with. It has never been a problem, they've never made me feel badly for wanting to break off higher than they normally would. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I agree. You pull stupid shit, getting drunk and going off with a bunch of guys you don't know, things can happen. However, what happened still isn't her fault. There is no justification for what the guys (whoever they were) must have done to her. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
