Douva, you keep questioning the plausability of her income... I dont know her, but I can attest that my financial status was basically identical to hers for 8 years. I left home at 17. Had almost full scholarship for undergrad, worked 40-60 hours a week on top of school during undergrad as a midnight waitress to pay ALL of my expenses. Grad school tuition was student loaned for one degree, the other was through a grant. I worked about 20 hours a week on top of two full time degree programs to pay the bills. I drove a piece of shit car, lived in a slum, ate a lot of noodles. Oh, and I still had health insurance. I made hard choices about where money was going to go, but survived 8 years that way. My only debt was student loan... no credit cards or anything else. Now I'm paying for the student loans, and as an eye doctor, it still amazes me how many people expect me to do my job for free even though I've been paying for my education for 7 years and still have another year to go before my $126K debt is paid. Enough detail for you? Oh, I work as a packer every weekend just so I can afford to jump. Even now. As a doctor. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -

Do you know her situation? Don't be so quick to judge if you don't know her personally. I put myself through college and grad school and paid all of my expenses making $10-$15K/year for 8 years. It sucked, it was very tight money wise, but it is do-able. I agree with many of the others, it is about where you choose to spend your money. There is lower cost health care available, plus state aid if your income is that low (depending on your state). It may not be great coverage, but in the event of major injury would be better than nothing at all. Cut out some expenses, pick up a little extra money at a side job, there's always a way. How about in our jumpsuits? Those are typically tight enough to make any toning/shrinkage easy to identify without those of us who are not young and hot insanely self conscious. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I hope that very few people heed your words. I have learned as much from unsolicited advice and information as from being a student. Sometimes the information provided wasn't applicable to me, sometimes I already knew was was being told to me, but sometimes I learned something new, or at least was made aware of some more questions I could be asking. I would far rather have unsolicited advice than have someone hold their tongue and not tell me something that I could learn from. One of the hardest lessons I've learned in this sport is that sometimes it's necessary to keep my ego in line, shut up, and realize I don't know it all. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I have a protec and use a Protrack. I made a little cloth bag (thin material) that velcros shut and the protrack fits neatly in it. On the outside of the little bag is velcro. I have the other 1/2 of the velcro in both ear holes of the protec, so I can velcro it into either ear. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Glasses now can be so much fun! Even high prescriptions can be made in lens materials that are very thin and not cokebottlish, frames are of infinite styles now. I have probably 8-9 frames... dark purple, green, black and peach, cherry red, burgundy, hot pink, brushed gold, lavendar, and a pair of beige/green/rhinestone temples on the way. They are fun to mix/match. Glasses are just one more form of jewelry. It drives me nuts to see people in scary old frames that they are afraid to update and try something new.... glasses tell a lot about personality and mood. Of course, I can afford to have 9 pairs of frames because I suck up to frame reps to get free frames. The labs all give me 1 pair of free lenses per year as the doc, so I get about 3 frames per year. Since I'm 32, my script won't change much over the next few years, so I can wear all of them Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

When you order 'Lager' in PA, it's Yuengling. When you order 'Lager' anywhere else, they look at you like you're insane... I found that out on a trip to FL, where they did have Yuengling on tap. I educated the bartender

My white outs are an old RX and my pupils are bigger than the lens pupils, so the white halo drives me insane. The ones that turn your whole eye black are scleral lenses, expensive and uncomfortable and not healthy. You couldn't pay me enough to put one of those suckers in my eyes Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -

When did you stop being nervous?
peregrinerose replied to Thomsen91's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Perfectly put, I agree completely!! When you aren't at least a little nervous, it's easy to get lazy and complacent and make mistakes and shortcuts (skipping gear checks, etc). Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
Open letter to all riggers (Long Rant)
peregrinerose replied to riggergreg's topic in Gear and Rigging
Hi... I'm newly riggerfied, but from what I've seen, the rigger's attitude means a lot more than anything else. There are some brand new riggers I'd trust with my reserve just because they take time, they are anal, and they care, and some with 20+ years experience that rush through things and are less than neat. Make sure whatever rigger you use will let you watch the repack and make at least some effort to work with you schedule wise to ensure that happens. If the rigger complains about or charges more for a Racer repack, he's not the rigger for you. Racers are actually easier than most other rigs to close, and the only part that requires a little skill/experience is seating the pilot chute well. Look at the loft... are the tools organized? Is it clean? Does the rigger leave 1/2 packed reserves lying around while he does other things then comes back to a rig that's been sitting unattended? Spend a little time with the rigger just observing, whether it's sewing a patch or teaching a packing class. You'll get to know your rigger and you'll learn a few extra things too. I once did a repack 6 weeks early just to get Greg (the poster of the original thread) to do the repack before he left our DZ for the season. I've never met a better teacher, more anal rigger, someone who truly cares about the quality of his work. He told me once that he packs every reserve like it is going to be used, though he hopes none ever are... I liked that. He was honestly my inspiration to get my riggers' ticket. California Legislator Proposes Ban on Spanking
peregrinerose replied to lawrocket's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't think there's anything wrong with a swat in the ass and I think the law itself shouldn't be passed, but realistically, 0-3 yo probably shouldn't be spanked to begin with. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-flap-heal.htm The above has a decent summary on how a cornea heals. You can see that it takes a very very very long time... much longer than 2 weeks, to have any substantial adhesion. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Focus Monthly's are the contact lens world equivalent of listening to an 8 track instead of a CD... outdated technology. Ciba is actually going to be discontinuing that lens in the near future.. no one is actively fitting them any more, there are many better options out there. No, it's not made for extended wear. The best 2 lenses are Purevision (B&L) and Focus Night and Day (Ciba). Both let about 20x the oxygen through the lens as the Focus Monthlies, which make it infinitely healthier to sleep in. Talk to your eye doc at your next eye exam as to whether or not extended wear is right for you (there are a lot of health reasons not do to it, smoking is also a contraindication) and then ask to try both lenses to see which fits your eye better when the doc checks them and you like better. The nice thing about the lenses is that there are now toric and bifocal lenses available in the higher oxygen transmission materials, so many more people can get them in their prescriptions than could even a few months ago. What I love about eye care is how fast it changes... I don't practice the same way now as I did when I graduated 7 years ago.... keeps my brain busy!! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
