Should Rigging Be a Requirement?

Should Rigging Be a Requirement?
peregrinerose replied to Andy_Copland's topic in Safety and Training
I thought the same thing. For someone with that many jumps to be that completely unfamiliar with their gear is just scary. I'm glad you started this thread. I wanted to say something in the other one, but didn't want to come across like I was bashing one person in particular. It's the scenario that is disturbing, not the person specifically. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I agree, but average looking guys are socially acceptable. Average looking girls are not (at least on TV), so I bet the ratings would actually be lower if they tried it. Though I'd watch that version too... hell, if I wasn't married, I'd be perfect geek candidate! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I'm still down 5 lbs from when I started, but considering that I spent 5 days on an Eloy trip, I'm just happy not to have gained anything last week. Particularly as we flew first class and drank accordingly Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Thanks! It was nice meeting you as well... It's nice putting faces to the DZ.com names. I wish we actually had some time to talk... I'm just starting to get video gear together, it would have been nice to pick your brain. All of us had a great time in Eloy... we'll be back next February! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I agree with all of this. I know this is a bit of a deviation from the original thread, but at what point is a person considered 'ready' to be an AFF instructor? It's next on my 'to do' list. At 425 jumps, I fly ok, have been told I'm a good teacher, but I don't feel like I've been around skydiving long enough (2.5 years) or have truly experienced enough to be a good instructor. How do I know if I'm ready or not? The people I've asked all say to go for it, but I've also noticed that people give the feel good answers face to face and often talk shit about the same jumper behind their back. There's no chance of me going for AFF before winter... my debate is whether to go this winter or wait an extra year. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

It's funny you said this. There was a guy at our DZ with a coaches' rating and 100 jumps. We got into an arguement as to whether or not 100 jumps was enough for a coach rating. I had over 250 jumps at the time and was just going through the coaches' course, finally feeling like I knew enough to help a newer jumper. This guy was pretty pissed at me for thinking that a 100 jump wonder probably didn't have the experience to be a coach. The same guy now is pushing 400 jumps and was telling me that 100 jumps isn't enough for a coaches' rating Jen Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I would pay damn good money to see someone do that! It would be the first time in history a cat was useful Though JENNR8R already has the first pelt on a pelt head. A beautiful rabbitskin from ebay. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I never thought I'd hear 'family friendly' and 'skydiver' in the same context BTW, did you get my voicemail? Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2do7fwT9Mew THIS is what you do when you can't jump in the winter. It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase 'turning points on the hill' Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Just watched it, actually thought it was well done. The jumpers were articulate, quick to point out misconceptions, did a nice job of describing what went wrong. He said that the gear did what it was supposed to do, but something was snagged on the container preventing use of the reserve. The driving analogy was also used when he was asked if he was going to jump again. It's absolutely incredible that he survived with such relatively minor injuries. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Kyle, you did a hell of job on that video... I'm impressed. The only thing I would have added is that you didn't point out Chad grabbing my ass on the way down (though it is apparent on the video). That could have been another instruction. .... 7. Cop a feel :-) Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I just turned on Today Show, they'll have another interview with the jumper eventually. I can't believe I'm actually going to voluntarily watch Today Show though Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Damn, I want one of those. I'd even settle for the slightly more boring version for $90. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

PIA Honors Dave DeWolf

I absolutely love Dave, one hell of a great teacher, he deserves this! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda -
I could have written that same post 2 years ago Be patient with yourself, at some point, something will just 'click' in your head and it will be infinitely easier and you'll look back and laugh at your first few jumps (It took me 35 or so jumps before I was standing up consistently and probably 100 jumps before I was standing up 99.9999%) Sounds like a canopy control course would help you quite a bit on the confidence end of things. My 100th was a 10 way or something that funnelled, but was fun. I was on a friend's 100th, we did a 2 way off of a helicopter, that was a blast. Probably the most fun I had on a 100th jump was another friend last summer, we did a 4 way speed star froma cessna at 7000 feet with no jump suits. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

Two short quotes taken out of the context of the whole book are basically meaningless. Only reading the entire text would provide enough background information to the author's intentions. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda

I adopted my rott mix the same way... abused and from a humane league. He was also an adult. Crate training, patience, and visit to the vet. She's a beautiful dog! Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
