    Pellet gun?

Indoor shooting is fun. My kids grew up doing that. For a while I shot 22's out in my shop. I built a heavy duty bullet trap. The problem was that my shop wasn't heated. There was also fumes from the gun powder and lead. I decided the shop was far from ideal. Particularly when the temp. was below zero. Shooting a pellet gun in the house works great. Just don't miss your bullet trap, or hit grandma when she comes walking around a corner.... It's a great way to improve your shooting skills. This new pellet rifle has about the same heft as my hunting rifles. I need to do some trigger work on it, and it should work fine....

    Pellet gun?

Maybe you should read again, what is a topic of conversation under the Speaker's Corner. Guns were the second thing listed (after politics)....

    Pellet gun?

Kill all the GOLFERS?! All yer gonna do is piss off a gopher with an air gun. 'I've heard' the best way to clean up the property is to use a .22 with CB caps, a low noise low velocity round. A bolt action is best because of the short size they don't feed well in autos or levers...and stepping back a few feet in the house and shooting through an open window pretty much keeps the outside noise to zero. . . or so I've been told. I also bought some 22 shorts. If the pellet gun doesn't work, I'll use them on gophers. I hate to get my neighbors worried when they hear a gun go off....

    Pellet gun?

...................................................... I hope it holds up. I guess time will tell. It comes with two barrels. One is a 22 caliber. I thought I'd use that on gophers. I shot it last night. It cocks fine with a little extra umph. At first it wouild not group very well. The scope mounts had loosened up somehow. I guess pellet guns are tough on scopes. There is a different type of push involved. It started grouping better with the tightened mounts, but there was still an occaisional flyer. I thought this scope was the problem. I figured it must have a hell of a paralax in it to cause flyers like that. Then the groups seemed to tighten up and stay that way. I read that a new pellet gun may take some breaking in to give consistent air pressures on firing. I think that was the problem. So, I think I have most of the bugs out of it. I thought I'd mess with the trigger next. See if I can lessen the trigger pull some. I used an old book for a bullet trap last night. I'll have to build a better trap next. I might buy that one from Walmart, and save some time..... Thanks for the advice....

    Pellet gun?

Every weapon that I have ever bought, be it a hand gun, or a pellet or BB gun, has always come with an instruction booklet. Did yours not come with one? Try googling their website for troubleshooting. I couldn't find anything in the booklets about why this gun might not be cocking. I called the company and they said I am probably not pulling hard enough. I'll give that a try tonight....

    Pellet gun?

I was thinking of building a bullet trap. It might be just as cheap to buy one of Walmart's though. They do look a little cheap though....Do they hold up?

    Pellet gun?

I bought a pellet type rifle the other day. My thinking is that this is something I could fire indoors, during the long winter months. I've noticed my shooting skills are not nearly as sharp as they once were, and I need practice. The thing is, I don't know much about pellet rifles. The one I bought is not cocking when I pull the barrel down. I was afraid of breaking something, so I hate to get too forceful with it. The trigger appears to be adjustable. Should I mess with that? I hate a stiff trigger. I read that the front screw should not be tampered with. There is another screw behind that.... I only spent about a $100. on this air rifle. It's a Beeman RS model with a scope. I probably should have bought a more expensive model, but I'm hoping to have fun with this one. We also have a lot of gophers taking over, close to town. I may have to exterminate some of them, come summer. Any advice would be appreciated. I haven't shot a pellet gun since I was a kid, and that was many years back. Maybe I'm going through my second childhood?....
  8. 377 The camels are large, furry, quadrapeds, some have one hump, some two, you can easily spot them on loads, they tend to fart a lot, moreso than the usual jumpers and they tend to be first out to form the base for relative work. One major way to spot them, there will be large piles of camel shit by the door, they tend to void their bowels jut prior to jumping. These forums are very educational. The other day I read on the computer that a beaver was a small furry creature with buck teeth. Imagine that!
  9. Nick, I'm glad you didn't quit jumping. Thanks for putting into words what many of us feel. I quit jumping about three years back. I decided I wasn't enjoying R.W. much, partly because my skin wasn't thick enough. Maybe I need to read some more of Pat's writing....
  10. Congratulations Pat! May you have 50 more. I still brag to people about how I once made a few jumps with Pat Works. Thanks for having patience with me. I still can't free-fly, but maybe I'll try it again some day....
  11. If so, Up Yours. Tar and feathers for you. DJ ................................................... Have a nice day, D.J.!
  12. ? When I was a kid in Boy Scouts ( Troop "86" Willing boro ,NJ. Burlington Council)a few of our Scout Masters were former "Green Berets". They got permission from the GreenBerets to allow our Troop to wear those berets instead of the standard BoyScout headwear of that era. So what? Does that make me and everyone else in that Troop a "douche- bag"? Or was it membership in such an organization as the Boy Scouts that annointed us with "douche -bag" status? By the way.. have you been to Wal-Mart recently? Last night at the register,on the tv screen there, Janet Napolitano implored me to snitch on any of my neighbors who may seem to be doing anything ..."Suspicious" . Apparently we should report that to a Wal-Mart employee !!!! Screw the Trident!!!! I want an SS insignia so no one questions my allegiance!! Blue Skies, DJ ...................................................................... Man! This is getting pretty far out there! Noone is going to call a bunch of kids douche bags for wearing a beret.... Is having pride in a unit you served in, comparable to being a German SS troop? I don't get your point.... This thread is about someone who was doing nothing more than wearing a pin. I really doubt if they were pretending to be a Navy Seal. Why is that worth getting your nickers in a knot over! This entire thread is over nothing in my opinion. What I have problems with is people who lie about their military background.....Again, I don't think that is what is going on here......
  13. Like I said....someone wearing a pin is probably nothing to get upset over.....I do have problems with people who pretend to be something they aren't though. That probably isn't the case here....
  14. QuoteSeriously. Only military groupies and nerds give a shit about this sort of stuff. In the general scheme of things, I could care less. reply] You'd probably see this differently if you had served in an elite military unit. You litterally work your ass off to earn the right to wear a beret or other military insignia. There's a sense of pride that goes along with all that. I had a student that finished jump school and ranger school, just a few weeks ago. In his ranger class they started with around 85 men. Only 26 finished. It's not easy to finish something like that. I agree that many people can over react to this....Possibly just wearing a pin doesn't mean much....Imposters drive me a little nuts at times.
  15. The army's black beret is another one.....
  16. I am a perfectionist with my rifles. If one doesn't shoot really well, after I fine tune it, or after I work up a good load for it, I'll trade it off. If a gunsmith patterns your shotgun, and if it is indeed off to him, I'd get a quote from him on fixing it. If it is too much money you might just sell it and buy another shotgun. I had a 22-250 once that wouldn't group very well. I sold it to a guy who didn't care too much about accuracy. He loved that gun. Sometimes, "Ignorance is Bliss". Many people never do really test a weapon much to see how it shoots. I've got a few shotguns that I have never patterned. Maybe I should do that. I'd probably find out they aren't as good as I had hoped. I still am able to shoot a turkey or two with them. They seem to work okay on ducks and pheasants. If I shot competitively though, they probably wouldn't measure up....
  17. There is a half line twist in the Psycho Pack, but before the lines are stowed, the bag is turned right side up, and the half twist is taken out. I personally love the Psycho Pack. My bag is one size too small and this is the only way I can get it in the bag neatly. I feel it has helped my opennings considerably on my Hornet. I was getting some slammers prior to starting to Psycho Packing. Some people do roll it up when they Psycho Pack. I make a series of small folds, rather than just roll it up. I feel it comes out neater that way....
  18. Have you heard that Christmas may be cancelled at our nation's capital, this year. Yes, the problem revolves around their Nativity scene. Apparently they can't find three wise men to play that part. They are still looking for a virgin. The good news is that there are no shortage of asses.
  19. I was told that Mr. Browning was a genius in terms of gun design. I'm trying to remember some of the other weapons he designed. I think the BAR (Browning Automatic Rifle) was one. They still make Browning rifles. I remember the old Browning shotguns...Was he the founder of that company? The 45's we shot in training were wore out. I'd like to shoot a quality 1911 45 someday. Or better yet, own one. I've heard they are a great weapon....Lot's of stopping power!
  20. I agree. Many people look up to various armed forces. As long as they are not being an imposter, it shouldn't matter. Some people over react to this. One summer I was jumping at Lost Prairie. I got up early one morning, and it was kind of cold. I had an old fatique shirt that I sometimes wore. It said U.S. Marines on it. I've always looked up to marines, but I sure wasn't trying to pretend I was one. The next thing you know this guy asked me, if I was a marine. I said no, I just have on the shirt. He then replied well, we should just rip that shirt off of you, in a smart alecky voice. I guess some folks can't see much further than the end of their own nose!

    Hunting

In almost fifty years of hunting I've probably killed well over a hundred deer, maybe twenty elk, a few bear, one moose, three mountain goat, at least twenty antelope, and assorted other critters. There's lot's of better hunters than me. I don't claim to be any expert, but I do have some strong beliefs on what a hunter should do or not do when afield. If we don't do the right thing, we are going to lose our right to hunt. Non-hunters have some legitimate gripes about hunting. I think you should make every effort not to wound game. That means passing on "iffy" shots. There's a lot of responsibility that goes along with owning a gun and having the right to hunt. If you wound and lose an animal there is noone to blame but yourself. I've wounded game over the years, and I always feel awful when that happens. It was a shot I shouldn't have taken. Anymore, I don't shoot a lot of shells each fall. I try not to shoot unless I've got a very high probability of making that shot. I hardly ever shoot off-hand unless the animal is very close. I take a rest, use shooting sticks, and sometimes a bipod. I also need to get to the range more and shoot a lot of ammo. Practice is important. Picking a spot, and trigger control is needed to hit an animal in the right place. I don't think it matters what you use for a weapon, as long as you stay well withing the limits of that weapon. You need to know your own ability and stay well within that limit too. In other words, don't shoot unless you are sure of your shot. If it doesn't feel right....DON'T SHOOT! Many hunters are fascinated by long shots. Many people brag about the buck they killed running. Both of these are great ways to wound game. I hardly ever take a running shot unless the animal is close. It's just too easy to wound something. I killed an elk this past fall at around 350 yards. I don't like to shoot much further than that. I had a scope and had a rest on top of a small sage bush. My 270 took out both lungs and exited on the other side of the elk. It only took one shot. A 270 is almost too light for elk hunting you have to be carefull. I'm a firm believer in using a big enough gun. I didn't mean to get up on my soap box again, but this is how I see things, when it comes to hunting....
  22. I don't know why people have to lie about stuff to look bigger in other people's eyes. I had a boss like that once. He told one big lie about how he had single-handedly disarmed three different parents who had brought guns into our school. He said the last one he knocked out with his own rifle, (after he ripped it out of his hands). The funny thing is, noone ever heard of this happening. One of his best stories was how he was a Green Beret in Vietnam. I think he was in Vietnam, but it was probably as a clerk typist, not a special forces soldier. He said that he was even trying to draw disability for PTSD, that he now had, from the war. To listen to some of his big windies, you'd think he was John Wayne himself. One of his best stories was of a halo jump he made into the jungles of Vietnam, without any training. I asked him if he used oxygen and had equipment on that jump. He said, "You bet." He supposedly made this halo jump in the 60's when he was in Vietnam. From what I have read halo jumps were not made in Vietnam until the 70's. And I don't think many were ever made in Nam. I know this guy liked Rambo movies, but this was getting hard to listen to.... So, my question is, how do you handle a boss that is full of shit? I finally told him that I didn't have any respect for him, in front of our superintendent. I guess, I'm lucky I didn't get fired for that. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time.....

    Hunting

. I guess I should have been much more clear, (I left that wide open didn't I?) I meant rich assholes that go to africa, just to shoot a fenced in Rhino, Elephant, or Lion, or Etc.) Not people that are actually using their trophy animal to it's fullest... Trophy hunters as you are reffering, watch dozens of aninmals walk right by, in easy reach, waiting for that Prize...different group...My bad! I know exactly how you feel. I hate people like that too. For many, getting their name in the record book is all important to them. Some even falsify. or poach to get a big animal in the book. There are fat cats with lot's of money who can't even build a fire on their own. They pay a ton of money for a guided hunt where about all they have to do is show up and pull the trigger on something. That is not hunting in my mind. Not all people who go on guided hunts are like that, but some are. Maybe I'm a little jealous because I'm far from rich. There are also people at the other extreme. I know one guy who killed a mountain goat with a homemade bow, here in Montana. It would probably have been a new world record. Yet he chose not to enter it in any book. He knew what he had done, and he felt it was wrong to kill and animal to make it into the record book. His name was Paul Shafer. He played football for the Bobcats in his younger days. His physical strength was impressive. He made bows for a living and was also an outdoor writer. Several years back he was killed in a skiing accident. He was a hunter who will be missed. I killed a mountain goat with a recurve about 30 years ago. It would have placed in the top three in the Pople and Young. I never listed it in any book though. I had three different official measurers measure it. One of them entered it in the state records. It was a state record for over twenty years....But I'm not a big fan of record books. Many traditional hunters refuse to enter a trophy in any book. I admire people who hunt public land. There it might be hard to kill even a small buck. If it comes hard it is a trophy in my mind....Hunting was never supposed to be easy. If it is, it doesn't mean much.... I'll get off my soap box. This is my two cents worth. This is what hunting means to me....

    Hunting

I used to trophy hunt all the time, even with a bow. It was more of a challenge than just hunting for the first doe that steps out. I don't like to end my season the first day out. Usually the toughest animal to get is one that has a big rack. They don't get old by being stupid. And that doesn't mean that I waste the meat. I make every effort to salvage any usable meat. I even tan the hide, make gun and coat racks out of the feet, and mount the head.....I don't like to waste anything on the game I take. My dogs get the bones and scraps. All this ties in to hunting ethics, and having respect for the animal you hunt. I try to never take a shot unless I can make a clean kill. (I don't want anything to suffer.) I wish more hunters hunted like that.....I know many don't.

    Hunting

I'm proud to say that I hunt. That doesn't mean that I like all hunters. I know there is such a thing as slob hunters. Some hunt with little or no ethics. I hate people like that. I don't think the majority of hunters are like that though. I grew up living in a rural area. Hunting was something most of us did. It was rarely easy. You learned to respect nature and everything in it. I feel that many have lost that respect by living in an urban setting. If you could experience a quality hunt, I think you would be hooked on the sport. Hunting is a lot more than killing. I don't even enjoy that part of hunting any more. What I do enjoy is being afield with my family.....The meat is an added bonus.
