I think overall the skydiving image portrayed on TV has come a long way. Back when I first started in 1982, if you saw anyone with a parchute on television, 99.9% of the time, that person was gonna die. Over the years I have seen skydiving being shown in more favorable scenarios, from the X games to advertising. You see it in TV show plots, (yes, usually showing the whuffos scared out of their wits, but at least they usually live now!). I think tandem skydiving has really helped people understand that this IS a survivable sport, while obviously not everyone has done it, most people at least know some one who has, and that person is still alive, and, may have actually enjoyed the experience! As far as the reality shows go, there is a plethora of tape out there thanks to digital camcorders, and of course, human misery/misfortune is great for ratings. Although occasionally, I even see positive footage (record loads, specialty skydives usually) on these shows as well. There is still plenty of room for improvement, but overall, I think we've come a long way in the last few years!! Shawn _________________

VFR rated, 140 hours in Cessna 150's, and 172's. Hang 4 (Advanced) hang glider pilot, and have my Instructor rating in paragliders. Started skydiving first back in 1982, paragliders and hang gliders in 91, and pilots license in 2000. Don't fly power much any more (too expensive!) rather spend the money on skydiving!!!

Yep, originally certified in 1976, Advanced Open Water instructor for both PADI and SSI, taught as a full time instructor for 11 years here in California. Received my SSI Platinum Pro card in 1999, just before I got out of it. Still occasionally dive for fun and abalone though! Shawn _________________

Zeg, Congrats on not being impaled! I have jumped there for many years, and as many have suggested, if you even THINK there is a question, start looking for an alternate early and often! Be careful though of the access roads surrounding the fields, often times you may encounter wires running along them, and in between fields. I have had many off DZ landings here over the years, and have only had to put it down in the grape stakes once... under a 22' SAC round reserve! That'll really get your heart rate up! Cya!
