  1. While this isn't a classy contest, I don't see how NOW could figure this to be a violation in the eyes of the FCC. I don't have a problem that NOW wants to deal with self-esteem issues. However, I am very tempted to file a complaint against their campaing when it starts because it would be using the same words and subject matter that they are complaining about now. On a side note - I have noticed that all the radio stations in town are doing edits to anything that might be considered a bad word (usually they are just playing the word backwards). These edits are happening on songs that I know for a fact have been playing edit free for over 15 years, if not longer. I recently called a local Bonneville station to see how far things had gone - I called my friend that produces a show there. I asked about Meridith Brook's song "Bitch" which used to be in their "A" rotation (meaning it would get played one or two times every four hours but they just were never allowed to say the name of the song). After the fines that the FCC handed out this year, they pulled it from their rotation for good. Bonneville is a Mormon owned broadcast company and has possibly the most squeaky clean stations in the country - they even force their morning shows to come to work in biz casual clothes despite that no one is at the station at 3am when they get there. Anyway - here is the story: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=519&ncid=519&e=28&u=/ap/20050103/ap_on_re_us/breast_contest Breast Enlargement Contest Draws Fire By VICKIE CHACHERE, Associated Press Writer TAMPA, Fla. - Radio giant Clear Channel Communications has come under fire from women's health advocates over a Christmas contest in which stations granted breast enlargement surgeries to women in four cities. In the "Breast Christmas Ever" contest, 13 women were awarded the procedure after writing essays to the stations explaining why they wanted larger breasts. A Tampa station claimed to receive more than 91,000 entries. Clear Channel said it had nothing to do with the contest and that it was a decision by local station managers to hold the promotion. The contest was aired on Clear Channel stations in Tampa, Jacksonville, St. Louis and Detroit. contest has drawn the ire of both the National Research Center for Women & Families and the National Organization for Women. NOW has urged its supporters to file complaints with the Federal Communications Commission against Clear Channel and its stations. The controversy comes within months of Clear Channel paying a record $1.75 million fine to resolve indecency complaints against New York-based shock jock Howard Stern, Tampa radio personality "Bubba the Love Sponge" and others. The station formally agreed to "clean up its act," FCC Chairman Michael Powell said in June. While neither women's group is alleging the breast surgery contest violated decency standards, they are complaining the contest promotes potentially dangerous surgery and leaves its winners with no legal remedies should the surgery go awry. Under the rules, winners must be at least 18 and sign a waiver protecting the company from all liability claims. "I try not to be judgmental about whether a large radio station should be giving away free toys to children instead of free breast augmentation," said Diana Zuckerman, president of the National Research Center for Women & Families, a health advocacy organization. NOW is urging the public to send e-mails to Clear Channel and the FCC to complain about what it considers a "degrading and unethical contest." About 3,400 messages have been sent to the FCC and Clear Channel, NOW said Monday. Jennifer Gery, a spokeswoman for Clear Channel, said the company had no oversight of the contests and didn't sponsor them. "There is no reason to be concerned because it's not a Clear Channel-sponsored contest, Gery said. "We empower our local manager to make programming decisions." David Fiske, a spokesman for the FCC, said the agency does not regulate the content of radio station contests unless it violates decency standards. The FCC only requires radio stations to conduct contests exactly by the stated rules and to fully disclose the terms of the contest. NOW has been active in lobbying the Food and Drug Administration against the marketing of silicone breast implants and has an ongoing "Love Your Body" campaign aimed at countering what it says are unrealistic body images promoted in the entertainment industry. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. And I doubt he would have said that if he has ever been to a computer forum. Most people on there are little kids giving out advice on what to do with your computer. And the website/email support from the big names are terrible - I'm still waiting for a response to any of the three emails I sent Dell two weeks ago. The advice given in this thread for her has been spot on and probably more helpful than she would have found on most other sites. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. Toshiba tends to use cheaper keyboards in their laptops as well. With daily use the springs in the keys give out quick. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  4. maybe they should send it over to the crash sites of the ones we lost during entry? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  5. I so would not lose that kind of $$$. I'd see if I could take a penalty and reschedule for another time/location or something. In the long run with some negotiation we worked it out with donations from some companies and found someone to take us in for a few weeks as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. Well, I have canceled an international trip and lost thousands, it wasn't connected to a tragedy however. It was a three month trip planned for four of us. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  7. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1057501&Sku=H24-PE387US You would still need to spend about $150 on a wireless access point and a wireless expansion card. OR there is something like this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1095668&Sku=I70-2980 Or this that comes bundled with all of your wireless needs: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1135211&Sku=T24-S206B%20KIT _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 8. Depends on your price range, what you will be doing with it, and how long you want it to last. Wireless can be done either way as long as you have an access point and a wireless card in your system. After the string of bad luck that people have been having with Dell Support, I would stay away from them. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 9. I work with non-traditional students on a daily basis and have been for a few years now. It is always harder being a non-traditional student. Your responsibilities are greater, there is more going on in your life, you have kids and bills. Plus you haven't had to work on a school schedule with homework, study time, stress of grades, paperwork, etc in years. Everything you had to do in the past while in school (sans party time) will have to fit in with your current lifestyle. Then there is always the fear of the unknown, the financial investment and the risk that you may not be able to successfully use the new education in the real world (that's more for the career changers than those upgrading a career). I've seen thousands of people do it - you can as well as long as you have the motivation, dedication and passion. With those three things any sacrifice you have to make will be small and easy to overcome because you will want to be in school trying to improve yourself. If you don't have those three things it will be easy to make an excuse to not study, miss class or drop out. Just make sure you have the support from your family - it's hard to overcome obstacles without them. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 10. counter point to your devil's advocate: If you had a trip to Lake Wales planned a week after the hurricane wipped out the town and dz, would you still have gone? Would you still have demanded the same level of service that was usually provided pre-hurricane? Now imagine that at 1000x the damage and death. Also, would you want to vacation in a spot where you not have access to clean, running water (or take the limited water away from those that needed it to stay alive). Don't forget the good chance of catching a disease from swimming in water that is full of waste and dead bodies. Then there is the health concern from being around dead bodies out in the sun. Plus the fact that close to five million people in the entire region are homeless and suffering (and most don't have access to clean water or food). Why would you let a little thing like that ruin your vacation? Would I cancel my trip even if it meant losing out on cash? Yup. In fact almost had to do that when a hurricane was headed to a vacation spot of mine about two years ago (I would have lost $200) _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. And your point? You also see The All Seeing Eye and other symbols of Freemasonry and The Order of Nobels and Mystics. Which, IIRC, wasn't put on the back of the bill until the 40s. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 13. Probably already busy doing the Habitat for Humanity thing. It's great that we have two prominent names and faces to help raise funds, but it was Carter's connections to Habitat that made it seem logical to me that he should be involved. Who knows, maybe he was asked and turned it down. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  14. Were the two ex-presidents there? I listened to the press conference and it was just GW reading a prepared script and then he took off - no questions and no comments from anyone else. I wonder why Carter wasn't involved? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  15. Thanks for that behind the scenes Chuck. They did a nice job on the show. Quick question for you military freefallers - they show the rucksack at one point as a belly mount - why do they eventually place it behind the legs with no belly mount? Would you be wearing that rucksuck on the back without any additional gear up front? I can imagine that an additional 40-60lbs on the back of legs has to be hell on any jumper. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 18. It's 55F in Chicago on New Years Eve with clear blue skies! How cool is that? I was able to go for a bike ride in shorts today and doubt I will need a coat tonight (one less thing to smell like bar tomorrow). Too bad the dz's are closed. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  20. No because he has not relocated. The school board I work for is begging for school bus drivers and they train. Construction trades are begging, walmart down here would hire him as a dept head more than likely. If he was in sales. He could work as a car salesman down here. Granted it might not be a VP job in a tall office building but there is things he could do. Tell ya what e mail me his resume and I'll see what I can do for him. Deal???? Where will he get the money to relocate? Will a bus company pay the $2000 or more moving fee? What about first and last month rent? Do you think a minimum wage job will help cover all those extra costs? What about finding new doctors that will take a patient with no health insurance? Then there is the fact that most jobs want you to have a solid local residence before they will interview you (esp if its a low pay job). The fact is he needs to focus on finding a job that won't cost him more in expenses than he would make in the first 2-6 months. He currently has me, someone else at my company, someone at WIA, someone at IETC, someone at IDES and someone at ABLE trying to help him find a job. Trust me when I say that all of us are trying all of the options, but relocation is not an option. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 21. I disagree. I went college, got loans (which I am currently repaying), and was the son of fairly wealthy parents. Want to help your kid? Take him off of -your- taxes and quit claiming him as a dependent, it worked for me. - Jim It doesn't work that way. Up until you are the age of 24 your parents must fill out the FAFSA with you. There is no way around it unless you have three years of detailed receipts showing you have been on your own (even then they may not rule in your favor), or if you are a ward of the state. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 22. And leave his sick wife at home alone? There is a shortage of jobs in Chicago. Just because someone saw a help wanted add while they were at Burger King on their lunch break doesn't mean crap. I talk to the unemployment offices several times a week - they use words like "bleek" and "terrible" when describing what the new job market is like. I used this guy as an example because he is doing EVERYTHING possible to try to make money. He isn't lazy or unmotivated. There is nothing out there for him in the professional market because he is underqualified, and no simple retail environment wants him because he is over qualified. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 23. Because college isn't cheap. They are going to a private school and are taking out loans, but were denied for most of the federal loans. He may have been out of work for the last six months but the FAFSA goes off of last years 1040. In a year's time they will be able to go back to school when they hit 24 and can file on their own and get more funds...but how long do you think a retirement fund would last while paying medical bills, mortgage, and two college bills? How much money do you think those kids can kick back to Dad? How quick can they get a job? If you have to think about this you don't know how bad the market is. They don't hire people like him that are overqualified. They turn them down and hire high school kids. The kids will stick around longer. I tried to get a job in retail/fast food while I was unemployed and they all turned me down. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 24. He said DC-3. Try 30 jumpers. At least. I've seen 39 in a DC3. When Lady Luck was running we usually needed 19 to get it into the air at regular jump costs. I've also seen it go up with about 14 tandems in it! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
  25. The same could be said for any major airport dropped into the middle of a city. If you sat in my apartment you would see just how close those 757's get to my neighborhood (I can watch approach from my couch). The GA aircraft and the National Guard choppers all go over my apartment now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
