The local news is trying to give the major ones plenty of coverage and letting people know how to contact them. Linkin Park (the band) has set up a site via the Red Cross for donations as well. They started it off with a $100k donation. www.musicforrelief.com -- that site will not go live until 3pm EST according to MTV.com. If you don't trust a site like that, you can always donate right to www.redcross.org...I know I will be making a larger donation on payday. It still doesn't make sense - 77,000 dead and counting...and it will get worse as they are just now getting to some of the islands. I also can't believe that the waves killed people in Africa as well. Yup, I've seen her as well. Then there is the older polish speaking woman that hangs around the Water Tower always asking for money in broken english. I have a hard time believing any of them anymore because, like you, I tend to run into them all the time. In fact you can associate the scam with the face you see them so often. There is one that really bugs me - a woman takes her kids and parks partially blocking traffic on the Ontario feeder ramp. She blocks enough of the lane that you have to slow down to get around her. She claims that she is out of gas - I offered to get her towed off the ramp with my AAA card and she hopped into the car and sped off when I started to dial. They have already started mass graves. If you check out the pictures on CNN, Yahoo, etc you wil find that any large hall has been converted into a morgue where they work on trying to identify the remains then they bury them. On some islands they are just lining the bodies on the beach. In just the first two days the US has donated $35million in cash. That doesn't count the cost of the Red Cross workers and other volunteers that flew out with supplies, or those that went to help with labor or search and rescue. It also doesn't count the individual donations via websites or hotlines. Ok. Here's one not so well known. I have a first cousin and her entire family who live in Jakarta, Indonesia. They are missionaries there (3 bush pilots and a nurse...plus their children) and travel alot throughout the country helping the locals. We have not heard from them since the disaster. We're still hoping and praying. ltdiver Hope things turn out ok. I just found out today that a former boss of mine was there with his family on the island of Phuket. A difference of opinion on the business model? Sure that is annoying. However, I wanted him to explain how he could justify HOW they are running the business. Could care less if he/she wanted to BASE. That is more a risk/reward decision than if they trust their own pack job. I saw a story today, they were seismic sensors, but who knows how accurate the story was - with how news info gets thrown out there so quickly after such an event I heard there was close to a two hour differance between the quake and when the waves hit (depite the 500mph speed of the Tsunami) _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I can't believe it - 22,000 dead, and still counting, and our priorities are Jet Li & some guy who's been on Oprah?! Pathetic - I have seen very few funds set up for relief of those who were affected, and almost all media coverage I've heard is concerning well-known Americans who MAY have been hurt. I have an issue with this... The Chicago Tribune has an article on the front page how a local is missing over there and the steps his family is trying to get him found (ie writting to Bush for help). It's very typical for the news to try to personalize things. This happens all the time - after 9/11 they focused on the idividual to help people understand the real impact of the tragedy, and there are plenty of other examples of this in the news over the last 50 years. I don't see anyone making light of the amount of lives lost or saying one life is better than others. CNN was talking all day about relief efforts and money being sent. Within 12 hours people from Europe were on site helping out. There are many dz's that do well and benefit the sport. These dz's do not steal from other jumpers. Stealing from one jumper to help another doesn't make sense and it isn't legal. Aircraft maintenance, carpets, airconditioning and rigging are not reasons to condone theft. I don't care that Cary owns a Lotus or what Ben does in his personal life either. Theft is Theft. That makes it bad for the sport - there is not ONE single good factor because of that. I am very familiar with capitalism. However when UA creates a new advertising scheme they do not copy the Delta commericals, steal their artwork, etc and then claim it to be their own (I know the UA internet marketing team personally so I know this to be true). Middle man or direct marketing is not new, nor is theft. The business practice that skyride uses is not a bad thing in theory...but HOW they are doing it is. Look at Jan's website, look at what teason has to say. Are you ok with his website being stolen? Are you ok with Bret Finely, McGowan, Kent, etc having their work stolen from them for profit? How about the theft of Trademarked names? How can you defend that theft?
