People from Chicago area, tell me what you think
ChasingBlueSky replied to hippydiver's topic in The Bonfire
I'd like to see that article just to see what areas they were referring to. One thing about our Mayor is that he has dumped millions of dollars into cleaning up the downtown area. Yea, areas like Rogers Park, Harvey, Munster, and the entire factory region are not that clean - then again, why would you want to go there?? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... We actively jump from March to November. You just need to dress a bit warmer for one or two of those months. If you are not a weather wimp it isn't as bad as people say. In November it is easy to make every load and have plenty of room in the otter and in the sky - it's really nice. Sky Knights in WI runs a cesna all winter long for the hard core individuals and Skydive Chicago puts up the 182 when there is a need/desire and one of the pilots is not in Mexico. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Cost of living in Chicago depends on where you live. I choose the SW side since I always have parking, have a much larger place (full building for what some people pay for a small studio), and access to the same public transportation. I spend a lot of my weekends downtown or hanging at the bars in Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville and never have an issue getting home. If you do live up on the northside you can find some decent places if you look hard enough. It all depends on your needs. What I would suggest if you are looking for a good place is try Oak Park - quick easy access to downtown, nice local neighborhood, and tons of apartments. Jobs? send me a PM and I can help you with that depending on your industry. If anything, I can use my network to point you in the right direction. I've already helped a few people on this board this year. Chicago is one of the friendliest cities you will ever find, and our music scene is pretty active. Check out www.chicagoreader.com and www.metromix.com for some ideas on that. This city is pretty clean compared to NY or other big cities as well. Skydiving has two very active chicago DZ's about 50-70 miles from most points in the city. (One of them near a beautiful state park you can easily relax at) You also have a very active club in WI just across the boarder and the WFFC is a 90 min drive away. Richmond takes 3 hours to get to and Couch Freaks is a 5 hour drive away. If you are an active jumper you can get in as many, or more yearly jumps, than those in the southern states. As far as the weather? Well, we haven't had a 100F day in nearly 6 years, winters are becoming a bit more mild but they seem to hang around a month or so longer than usual. The good things about our winters is that it keeps away those we really don't want here Hands down you would be hard pressed to find a better home than here. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... What can we do about Skyride?
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Are you kidding me? Did this really happen? How low does someone have to be to exploit someone's death. This goes beyond unethical business practices and shows the true character of those involved. How can anyone condone or continue to make excuses for a business or person that does this? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I think 5 miles was the furthest for me - that's what happens when you start to set up a 9 person tube in an otter when the exit light goes on. Imagine fitting all 9 people inside the door with no one outside and only three people deep. Luckily it is on video from someone that was behind us in the plane - you can hear him laughing and say "it worked." It was November so there was nothing but open fields for us to land in, flagged down the first pickup truck and was almost back to the DZ when the first chase vehicle passed us by. Very strange opening up and doing a 360 looking for home....and not seeing it. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... The new hotness standards of keyboards?? Huh?? Which keyboard sets the standard? The one in the original post looks cool, but it is vaporware at the moment. Most other keyboards are plain, wireless, wired, or junk. There isn't too much exciting in the way of keyboards - some will have an extra option or two involved but the software that runs with it is usually bloated, buggy, and often clunky in usage (and don't forget the occasional memory leak). Personally, I have the Saitek Gaming Keyboard after testing out eight or nine variations of keyboards in the last 5 months. My backup keyboard is a MS PS2 natural keyboard that I use to access my bios since USB is not loaded upon startup. I liked the Zboard - it worked well. However I couldn't justify the cost. If this keyboard ever came out I would try it out but doubt I would purchase it in the first generation. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I LOVE the Transformers and this idea doesn't make me that happy. I have the Original movie and the TV show on DVD...been thinking of finding the Japanese versions that never made it here....never been a fan of the animal version. Michael Bay only makes bad movies! Spielberg seems to have been infected by George Lucas and now makes bad movies that are all FX and NO story. Ivan was right - this movie will suck. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

That is why God invented the toggles. Don't want to land in the corn? Don't fly there. I've been to 6 WFFC (including Chopper, baloon, C130 and birdman jumps), 1 Couch Freaks and 2 Richmond boogies - have never landed in the corn (and Richmond has the biggest damn cornfield I have ever seen). If I go this year I need to avoid getting another damn speeding ticket. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I didn't say anything was untrue. This whole thing is just a prime example on why politics in our country is in the gutter. But, to nearly applaude Rove as a truth giver? eh. Now that is spin. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....
-
Nice spin! There is one thing as a reporter reporting the political moves in the beltway....which still seems suspect to this day (The assingment to Africa, etc). However, this does not mean that Rove is cleared for his actions. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I sent out letters today to my representatives to push this issue into the light and make sure proper action is taken. Even if Rove is going to claim ignorance of the law (how scary is that, the top advisor the the President can/will claim that??!!)....we should not have a man who will put the life of another American at stake just for political gain at such a top spot in our government. There is no excuse for this action other than personal financial and political gain. Dump the bastard, now. Then put him on trial. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Who doesn't support GWB now, but voted for him?
ChasingBlueSky replied to Newbie's topic in Speakers Corner
funny i heard the same bather about Regan. Not everyone thinks that Regan was a great President. Most of what we hear about him is post-funeral bandwagon media hype. What stands out most about the Regan administration for me? Iran/Contra. I put Regan's "I don't recall" right up there with "I did not have sexual relations with...," "No new taxes," "I am not a crook," and just about anything that came out of GW's mouth. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... You may not know it, but those non-standard questions will most likely carry the most weight outside of your skillset. Screwing up one question matters sometimes and it doesn't others. The deciding factor is who the client is and how picky they can be. I have a recruiter friend that placed someone into the interview process at one of the largest companies in the world....he missed an easy, entry level question at the end of a 8 hour interview day. He didn't get the job. I had someone snap back at the interview (don't do that) and still go the job. If it isn't my client I can't tell you if it matters or not. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Don't underestimate the "stump the dummy" questions - often known as the "bar raiser." They are there to beat you up and test your limits from a neutral point of view. At companies like MS those questions can effect if you get in at a higher pay or not....or just not in the door at all. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Longer interviews are becoming the norm. There is a large focus on cost per hire these days....and they are trying to lower that. Having all the key people involved helps make sure there is a good fit with the culture and philosphical views of the company from all angles. Normally you will not get an offer on spot after a long day of interviews....they will need to meet and discuss their notes How did you leave the interview? Did you ask THEM the hard questions as well? Did you ask them what their concerns were? You want to do that while in person so you can turn all their negative thoughts into positive ones about you - you would do that by showing how you learned from those mistakes or how the mistakes have helped bring value or some success story to help out your employer. Did you tell them your interest in the job and why? Did you ask for the job? _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... News: Skydiving may be a turn off for women.
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in The Bonfire
http://channels.netscape.com/new/html/live/scoop/ni/13.html?floc=isp-113 Guys: Women Really Turned Off by THIS A piece of advice, men: If you want to seem attractive to the ladies, cut out the dare-devil stunts, such as bungee jumping and fast driving. You may think you're impressing women, but you're really turning them off. That's the word from a team of researchers at the University of Maine in Orono that determined women prefer more cautious men for partners. New Scientist, the BBC News, and Reuters report that the study of 48 men and 52 women found that while men really believed daring stunts would catch the eye of a woman, the women said such behavior was not attractive. However, men who take risks just for the thrill of it are more likely to be respected by other men. "Men thought women would be impressed by pointless gambles, but women in fact preferred cautious men," lead study author Dr. William Farthing told New Scientist. So what can men do to attract women? The ladies are turned on by men who have a high status, so if the risk-taking behavior leads men to be respected by their friends and elevated in status because of it, then the dare-devil men could seem attractive to women. Women are also attracted to men who are more altruistic. For example, in a scenario pitched by the research team, the majority of women were more attracted to a man who saved someone's life than they were to fast driving. Empathy and sensitivity are the traits most women seem to seek. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
