I've heard some old timers say it was done "back in the day" but it could just be a story _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

In your opinion. Our DZOs would put booties on all the students jumpsuits if it were practical. Their reasoning is why learn something and then learn something else later. Oh, but the way, they've been at training students for decades. Exactly. Which is why some DZ's start students on HP canopies (re: A Sabre 2 IS a HP canopy). With a good instructor, it can be done. The problem there is that not all are good instructors, some just have the rating. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... With my Chicago accent and since I was with a group of about 20, I'm sure they figured it out. But I did go to the bar inside and had the same thing happen. My roomate got one of those huge ass containers of that red drink at HUGE ASS BEERS and killed it off in an hour, along with some antifreeze and plenty of those other drinks down there. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I was using booties by jump 14, also by request of my instructor. What is the important part in there? My instructor had evaluated me and realized I could use them, safely. Talk to your JM, always talk to your JM. People on this board will not know your flying abilities unless they have jumped with you. Plus there are people on here that will outright attack you for asking a simple question or requesting help because they have more years/jumps than you. Stick to talking to those at your DZ for now and avoid anyone that is abusive in nature when handing out advice - those are the wrong people to listen to and they will not be able to help you. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I wasn't that impressed with the O'Brien Hurricane when I was in New Orleans. They overcharge for it and it was mostly ice. I asked the bartender not to put so much ice in the drink and I think he put in more!! Now the Hand Grenade from Tropical Isle or the Jester were good! But I'd settle for a HUGE ASS BEER! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

Could a homeowner's gun have saved this woman's life?
ChasingBlueSky replied to peacefuljeffrey's topic in Speakers Corner
No, they are not safe. I just spent the last year working across the side street from Cabrini Green. In college I spent two summers living in the area of the projects doing inner city social volunteer work and avoided gunfire on a few occasions. We didn't have the option to stay at the building we were working at because it was robbed EVERY day and the cops suggested it was safer to not spend the night there. I've got quite a few stories from working in and around those areas...and I have gone up into the "reds" .....and the place I stayes was only a short walk from the corner known as "buckets of blood".... Ever been in the projects? From what I witnessed, most crimes were instant - happened before you knew what was going on - you were ambushed or a car drove up and you got shot at. I don't think in any of those cases that having a gun would have scared them away from you or given you a chance at self defense. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... HIPPA and all medical coding and biling will only grow in the next few years. All Dr offices will have to start using it in the next few years and have to have a trained professional on staff to do so (which will most likely be interegrated with the accounting job in smaller offices). Chicago's growth trend in the medical/insuance billing field for jobs is beyond the national average. People wlike you with your IT background will fit in well there and it looks like the title they are using these days is "infomedic" for that spot. Good place to be and its an area that would be hard to ship the jobs offshore. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Because there aren't any. That's an easy statement to make NOW, post war. How much would you have wagered on it before March 2003? In March of 2003 I didn't want them to invade. I wasn't impressed with Powell's speech and there was more noise about their being no weapons than there were about the fact that he did have them. I used to say back then, oh geez...well, now that we are in there we better find those WMDs, but I don't think we will. I also said that there would be an uprising from the people and that was a conclusion I made with my limited understanding and study of the middle east. Now, if I was able to come to that coclusion, you think that GW with his IVY education should have come to that as well? Yes, I would have bet that they never would have found WMDs. That is not a bet I would make with Iran or N Korea right now. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... ChasingBlueSky replied to skydiverek's topic in The Bonfire
Can you make it fit? Do you have experience or training that may pair up with it. I'm sure we would have loved to seen more than 5 resumes. Oh yea, training can fit under "Professional (functional) experience" You have to realize that when the market is tough like it is now, the job requirements grow and they become more selective on who they are going to choose. I think I have only hired two people in my years as a recruiter that were a 100% match of all the skills demanded. Skills listed as "Must Have" are the exception to that. Back in 1999 when the market was better I could place someone into a job if they could spell the skill!! (ok, that is a bit of an exageration, but I'm sure you get the point). _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... ChasingBlueSky replied to skydiverek's topic in The Bonfire
YES! YES! YES! Can I get an Amen?! Elvisio "no more resumes that read like War and Peace" Rodriguez It is not a problem to have a two page resume anymore. Most resume consultants will tell you that. BUT what you should do is make each resume custom for the job you are going for. Don't list an objective, but list Summary of Qualifications stariting with "I have ____ years of experience (total years of all jobs to show you are not a newbie). Then list profesional/functional experience. Try to stay away from using job titles that no one knows or understands (ie Help Desk Super Level III Analyst tells me nothing). Don't just list what you were responsible for, list what you did and how it helped improve the company. Make a list of the things you do the best - whatever you can't rate a 7 or higher on a scale of ten - don't bother with it....and focus on no more than five skills (usually). After you list your Professional Related experience then list Chronologially you positions - and this is not an application so you don't need to list all of them - pick what is most relevant. Never put references on a resume - a good recruiter will call them and try to hire them. If you are using Monster or any of those job boards - refresh your resume daily. If you don't you won't even show up on the first page of the 1000 that come up. Spend a few hours searching and find what key words the jobs in your field use and then put them in at "font size 1" or insible text at the bottom of the field...make it a comprehensive list. Why? For the most part it is the little and medium companies that are doing the majority of the hiring right now and they have to pay by keyword when they list a job...they may never see yours if you put just "clerk" instead of "office clerk" Some additional stuff on job searching: Apply for everything online. Some companies will get a thousand resumes for a position...but I am hearing more and more that companies are getting only dozens. The two people we just hired (I was one of them) was from networking and then from one of five resumes we got from Monster. But since the market place is still slow, you would do better off by finding networking meetings and attending them, posts like this, visiting your chamber of commerce, etc. If you went to the Job Fair at Soldier Field the other day and got in you were lucky - they had a line that was over 2 hours long to get in to see the 60 companies there and since so many people were there you were only allowed to apply with two companies. Ok, ramble done....don't have time to read or spell check....so hope it makes sense. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Quote I'm 3 times older than you and I've worked on the south side of Chicago for longer than you've been alive, and this has not happened to me - ever. Quote For those that don't know - his job is pretty much in the middle of the projects, and is one of the highest crime areas of the city. I had a friend from HS that was shot to death in his car about two blocks from John's school. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... They used to staple it to the paperwork. Dunno if they still do. You could spot a shitty driver by the number of staple holes in their DL. In high school, we'd always steal someone's brand new DL, and put about a dozen pair of staple holes in it, so their parents would think they were hiding tickets... heh...[/ex-chicagoan] You could slightly iron th old license and the holes would go away. A trick all HS students learned. They still staple the new ones. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Go to the DMV and get a State ID if you want photo proof. It is a legal ID and works for the I9 forms, getting into bars or past TSA checkpoints. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
N. Korea May Be Preparing Missile Launch
ChasingBlueSky replied to ChasingBlueSky's topic in Speakers Corner
So in the news today we have this story as well as Iran saying they will not stop producing weapons grade uranium. N. Korea May Be Preparing Missile Launch By MARI YAMAGUCHI, Associated Press Writer TOKYO - Japan said it has obtained intelligence indicating that North Korea (news - web sites) may be preparing to test fire a short-range missile, in what would be the latest provocation from the communist country. Government officials convened an emergency task-force team in the prime minister's office Thursday after intelligence showed that North Korea appears to be beefing up troops and equipment around missile launch bases, said Shigemi Terui, a spokesman at the prime minister's office. Media reports citing government officials said an immediate launch was not expected. South Korea (news - web sites) said missile-related activities had been detected in the North by U.S. and South Korean militaries. "There is a high possibility that these were part of the annual, routine activities of North Korean missile units," Rhee Bong-jo, the deputy unification minister, said in Seoul. Nam Dae-Yeon, spokesman of South Korea's Defense Ministry, said, "we cannot rule out a possibility of a missile launch, so South Korean and U.S. intelligence authorities are working closely together to follow the movements." Terui said the task force was gathering more information. When North Korea test fired a ballistic Taepodong-1 missile over Japan and into the Pacific Ocean in 1998, it highlighted its military ambitions and penchant for provocation. The North said it was an attempt to insert a satellite into orbit. The unpredictable communist nation also test fired short-range, land-to-ship missiles into the ocean on at least three occasions last year during an international standoff over its nuclear weapons program. The United States and South Korea criticized them as attempts to force Washington into direct negotiations with North Korea about its nuclear weapons program. Japan's daily Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper Thursday reported that officials believed North Korea was preparing to launch a short-range Nodong missile or possibly a long-range Taepodong. Nodong missiles have a range of about 810 miles, while the Taepodong is believed to have a 1,540-mile range. Most of Japan's four main islands fall within their range. The developments come amid troubling signs in recent weeks from the North, whose previous test launches were widely viewed as attempts to gain leverage in rocky nuclear negotiations. Angry rhetoric from North Korea's official media has said that Pyongyang could refuse to take part in six-nation talks on ending its nuclear weapons development. The next round of talks with the United States, South Korea, Japan, China and Russia were planned for late September. Doubts also remain about a mysterious explosion in North Korea's remote northeastern region on Sept. 9. Diplomats who visited what North Korea claimed was the site of a huge explosion found no sign it was nuclear. South Korea said a huge mushroom-shaped plume thought to be from the blast occurred 60 miles away from the site where North Korea said it occurred. The developments also come as the United States prepares to launch a new mission patrolling the Sea of Japan with Aegis-equipped destroyers to monitor any ballistic missile launches — an effort widely seen as being aimed at keeping watch over North Korea. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Jack, If it is an accredited school they have to disclose all costs on the enrollment agreement by law or they could lose their accrediation and/or Title IV funding. Look back at the paperwork they gave you, it should all be listed. If it isn't you may want to rethink what school you are going to. It is very typical of the military to mess with what they will pay. Almost everyone former military person I have helped go back to school has ended up in paperwork hell that usually delays their start by many months. However, the military usually only pays tuition, not fees. Sometimes fees is another word for books, supplies, activity fee, student ID, reduced bus fare card, etc. But that is usually stuff not covered by any of the armed forces. Call me if you have any questions. Congrats on going back to school thou. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Do men & women have different internal thermostats?
ChasingBlueSky replied to SpeedRacer's topic in The Bonfire
I've been told it also has to do with lack of Iron that most women seem to have. Also, it depends on where you live like Parajito said. When we were in Mexico, both the guys and girls were wearing tank tops and shorts while walking around at night - with sweat pouring out of all of us. The locals all had on long sleeve shirts and pants. BTW - speaking of temps. I always found it interesting that my mom would need the house COLD in the summer but HOT in the winter. The two temps the house were kept at were never even close. I've noticed this pattern with a lot of people - and once I pointed out to my roommate, he stopped messing with the thermostat. So, I think some of it is menatl as well. I do keep a fan on in my office all day, but only because I hate stale office air - I love a nice breeze. (duh?) _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again..... -
I guess hearing stories for over 20 years about how bad the military was from family and friends doesn't count for anything. Which wouldn't be happening if we didn't illegally invade Iraq. The action of our troops in the prisons over there may have caused it as well, plus the piles of dead innocent children. The US was the cause in all of these, as was the "honor" those troops seemed to show. I've seen the proof from the 90s as well. The fact is, we have no proof from this century. SH was being a pain in the ass, but he was slowyly coming to terms with the sanctions, and even the inspectors said there was nothing to be found anymore. No, he didn't show what he did with them, but he did show some progress otherwise the inspectors would never have left thinking there was nothing to be found. Are you for or against the UN? Here you use them to help your argument, yesterday you called them blow hards. The Security Council didn't vote for an invasion and yesterday the UN reminded GW that his actions were illegal in the eyes of the UN/World. That puts GW on the same page as SH with breaking UN laws. Which is why I don't support the death penalty. Ever talked to someone on death row? I have a few times, and a few people that were up for murder. I interviewed one man that was accused of killing a cop and was going to be killed...but there was a lot of noise about it, so I gave him radio time. Without all that noise they would have killed him....a year after his original scheduled date he was released from jail - the cops partner had hidden evidence that proved his innocence. No one deserves to have that choice over who lives - and that is one of the problems with this world - people want that power. I would do what it takes to be safe. Material goods can be replaced. I have a teacher in HS that was killed because he tried to stop someone in his house. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... What about ROI? How long before you zero out your costs compared to how much you would have spent on the utility bill? How much upkeep? Is this practical for an apartment or is it better to wait until you get your own place?
