  1. Stargate was supposed to end at the end of the last season. In fact, the two parter that ends the season originally started as the movie they were going to make, which is why it is so polished. Maybe it should have - not having Jack as a full time character this season makes it a bit lame. And I am still not sure what to make of Atlantis - the actors on that team remind me of that hollywood version they happened upon a few seasons ago. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 2. Chiana was the same actress. They changed her eyes - that is why she looked different. From my understanding, this is it for the show. SciFi feels it costs too much to produce this show for the ratings it gets (which were always close to the SG1 ratings). Instead they feel that Battlestar and those cheap B-grade horror flicks they make are more worth the investment (they get about 2 million viewers on Sat night for those movies). Personally, I would cancel Ghost Hunters and Scare Tactics (why give Billy Baldwin a show?) and continue making Farscape. Anyone think that D'Argo has the knowledge of the wormholes??? Still, a very impressive show - I would be hard pressed to choose a favorite between that ending and the Babylon 5 ending. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 3. They rerun it during the week all the time, and now it is on DVD (both Blockbuster and Netflix carry it). Usually I just keep my Tivo set to record it. When I first show the show on SciFi 5 years ago, I told myself I wasn't going to watch some stupid puppet show and crossed it off. My roomates told me I needed to watch it since they knew my taste...and I never missed an episode after the first one I saw. John Chriton is one of the best SciFi characters ever created. If you ever read the forums for the show, you will see the actors actually posted in them and enjoyed the show as much as the fans did. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 4. Some people, like myself, are usually under Dr orders to get the shot due to my weak immune system. Last year was the first time I didn't get it in years and I got sick seven times last season The problem with me is that any cold can turn into Pnuemonia for me, I'm prone to it - have had it 13 times. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 5. Anyone else out there catch this? I was pissed when they canceled what was one of the better shows on TV at the time, esp with the way they ended it! While the four hours seemed rushed, esp the first two - I thought it was a great finale. All of the characters completed their stories, and it stayed true to the energy the show always had. It was great to see all of the actors fall right back into those characters as if they never missed a beat. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 6. The puppet comment put everything into perspective and was one of the funniest comments on the show. It was incredible watching both of them treat Stewart as if he was supposed to be a non-partisian reporter on a station that is called "Comedy Central." I've caught some jabs at "comedy based news shows" on all of the news stations - from O'Reilly, Crosstalk, Hardball and even Real Time (which didn't make sense to me). I think this is what prompted Stewart to go on....plus he gets to plug his book! Stewart had an agenda on that show and I am glad he went on. He said what needed to be said - most news is now a joke or a venue for entertainment. Most of these news shows just spit out talking points, catch phrases and useless drivel. (the spin alley comments come to mind). It's amazing to think that a comedian schooled two reporters on how the news really should be. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 7. Just read that Skydive Chicago will be adding a 200' x 200' diamond shaped swoop pond for next year! For those familiar with the DZ, it will be in the north landing area behind the fuel truck. That is a huge area with plenty of outs!! _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  9. Congress has no lines, no charge for flu vaccine Charles Babington and David Brown, Washington Post WASHINGTON, D.C. -- While many Americans search in vain for flu shots, members and employees of Congress are able to obtain them quickly and at no charge from the U.S. Capitol's attending physician, who has urged all 535 senators and representatives to get the vaccines even if they are young and healthy. The physician's office has dispensed nearly 2,000 shots and doses remained available Tuesday. That's a steep drop from last year's 9,000 shots, said a spokesman for attending physician John Eisold, because many congressional employees have voluntarily abided by federal guidelines that call for this season's limited supply to go mainly to the elderly, the very young, pregnant women, long-term care patients and people with chronic illnesses. But people of all ages who work in the Capitol can get a shot by saying they meet the guidelines, with no further questions asked, said the spokesman, who cited office policy in demanding anonymity. "We leave it up to people to read the guidelines" issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and then to state whether they want the shot, the spokesman said. "We don't ask. We trust people. ... Most of the people have been very good." The policy covers legislative staffers, police, construction workers, restaurant employees, journalists and others. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., a heart surgeon, sent letters urging his 99 colleagues to get the shots because they mingle and shake hands with so many people, said his spokeswoman Amy Call. She said she did not know how many senators took his advice. Tommy Thompson, secretary of Health and Human Services, reiterated the Bush administration's guidelines at a news conference Tuesday. "What we are telling people is if you are not in a priority category, do not get the shot," he said. The target populations for flu vaccination, as described by CDC guidelines, include people over age 65, children 6 months to 23 months, people age 2 to 64 with chronic illnesses, medical workers involved directly in patient care, and several smaller "risk groups." The Capitol's attending physician's office began dispensing the vaccine as soon as it arrived on Sept. 30, the spokesman said. Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Mich., who is 50, said he got a flu shot as soon as it was available, "before I knew there was a problem." Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn., 62, said, "I haven't done it yet, but I want to. We're not in the priority category" set by the CDC. "But I think the [Capitol's] doctor makes a good case. We can pick it up and spread it" through interactions with constituents. The White House medical unit is giving flu shots only to staff "meeting the CDC guidelines," a spokesman said. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 12. This is just strange. I have no idea how a flat screen works, anyone have a clue on how this could happen? EUGENE, Oregon (Reuters) - TV hardly gets much better than this. An Oregon man discovered earlier this month that his year-old Toshiba Corp. flat-screen TV was emitting an international distress signal picked up by a satellite, leading a search and rescue operation to his apartment in Corvallis, Oregon, 70 miles south of Portland. The signal from Chris van Rossmann's TV was routed by satellite to the Air Force Rescue Center at Langley Air Base in Virginia. On Oct. 2, the 20 year-old college student was visited at his apartment in the small university town by a contingent of local police, civil air patrol and search and rescue personnel. "They'd never seen signal come that strong from a home appliance," said van Rossmann. "They were quite surprised. I think we all were." Authorities had expected to find a boat or small plane with a malfunctioning transponder, the usual culprit in such incidents, emitting the 121.5 MHz frequency of the distress signal used internationally. Van Rossmann said he was told to keep his TV off to avoid paying a $10,000 fine for "willingly broadcasting a false distress signal." Toshiba contacted Rossmann and offered to provide him with a replacement set for free, he said. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 14. Unless you outsource and use a consulting firm instead. It just happens to be that there are quite a few consulting firms that no longer keep a bench of IT workers, but bring in plenty of H1Bs. They front the cost of the visa, lawyer, etc and in turn bill them out for many dollars less than a traditional local would get billed out at. I used to post jobs on Monster and decided it was no longer worth the time and energy because the majority of the resumes were from consulting firms pushing H1Bs at me, despite my demand that no H1Bs be sent to me in the job listing. You can tell they are from a consulting firm because they have cookie cutter resume templates. The statistics just came out this week - IT jobless claims are UP again this year and those that do have jobs are making less money this year than last year! Plenty of IT workers are busting their butts to get retrained, I see them all the time here at my school. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 16. Then see this: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041019/ap_on_el_pr/kerry_film_reporter_4 Sinclair Axes Journalist Critical of Film By KASEY JONES, Associated Press Writer BALTIMORE - Sinclair Broadcast fired its Washington bureau chief, saying he revealed company business when he discussed its upcoming program on a documentary critical of John Kerry anti-Vietnam War activities. Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. said in a statement late Monday that it fired reporter Jon Leiberman and that "we are disappointed that Jon's political views caused him to violate company policy and speak to the press about company business." In his initial remarks, published Monday by The (Baltimore) Sun, Leiberman called the Sinclair show "biased political propaganda, with clear intentions to sway this election." Leiberman said he was fired Monday by Joseph DeFeo, Sinclair's vice president for news, and escorted out of the company's headquarters in Hunt Valley, Md. "I was told I violated company policy by divulging information from a staff meeting" to The Sun, Leiberman said late Monday. The staff meeting took place Sunday at Sinclair's headquarters, Leiberman said. He said staffers were told that the news division would handle the hourlong show, based on the documentary "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal." The 42-minute documentary features former prisoners of war accusing Kerry, a decorated veteran who took up the anti-war cause upon returning from Vietnam, of prolonging the war and worsening their plight. Sinclair said last week it hadn't been decided how much of the documentary would appear in the completed show. The Democratic National Committee has filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission contending that airing the film should be considered an illegal in-kind contribution to the Bush campaign. Leiberman, 29, said he told DeFeo he would not participate in preparing the program about the film and that he objected to it being labeled news rather than commentary. "We have no further comment on the actions of a disgruntled employee or an ongoing personnel matter," the Sinclair statement said. "Viewers can grade Leiberman's opinion versus the reality when the finished product is aired." Leiberman said he was not disgruntled and that the company had largely treated him well before now. "I love what I do, but I love doing news. ... And I just felt like nobody was listening." Earlier this month, Sinclair ordered its 62 TV stations across the country to pre-empt regular programming to air the show. In Baltimore, the show airs on Friday; at least some other stations were planning to show it Saturday. Leiberman was chosen by Sinclair last year to start the company's four-person Washington bureau. He said Sinclair told him that he was fired for cause and would receive no severance. "I know I stood up for the principles of objectivity," he said. "In journalism, all we have is credibility and objectivity." Note: As a reminder, Sinclair was the group that pulled Ted Koppel's reading of all the American troops that were killed in Iraq because it could be considered anti-Bush. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 20. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=562&ncid=738&e=1&u=/ap/20041019/ap_on_hi_te/spying_with_google Google's New PC Search Tool Poses Risks By ANICK JESDANUN, AP Internet Writer NEW YORK - People who use public or workplace computers for e-mail, instant messaging and Web searching have a new privacy risk to worry about: Google's free new tool that indexes a PC's contents for quickly locating data. If it's installed on computers at libraries and Internet cafes, users could unwittingly allow people who follow them on the PCs, for example, to see sensitive information in e-mails they've exchanged. That could mean revealed passwords, conversations with doctors, or viewed Web pages detailing online purchases. "It's clearly a very powerful tool for locating information on the computer," said Richard M. Smith, a privacy and security consultant in Cambridge, Mass. "On the flip side of things, it's a perfect spy program." Google Desktop Search, publicly released Thursday in a "beta" test phase for computers running the latest Windows operating systems, automatically records e-mail you read through Outlook, Outlook Express or the Internet Explorer browser. It also saves copies of Web pages you view through IE and chat conversations using America Online Inc.'s instant-messaging software. And it finds Word, Excel and PowerPoint files stored on the computer. If you're the computer's only user, the software is helpful "as a photographic memory of everything you've seen on the computer," said Marissa Mayer, director of consumer Web products at Google Inc. The giant index remains on the computer and isn't shared with Google. The company can't access it remotely even if it gets a subpoena ordering it to do so, Mayer said. Where the privacy and security concerns arise is when the computer is shared. Type in "hotmail.com" and you'll get copies, or stored caches, of messages that previous users have seen. Enter an e-mail address and you can read all the messages sent to and from that address. Type "password" and get password reminders that were sent back via e-mail. Acknowledging the concerns, Mayer said managers of shared computers should think twice about installing the software until Google develops advanced features like password protection and multi-user support. In the meantime, users of shared PCs can look for telltale signs. A multicolored swirl in the system tray at the lower right corner of the computer desktop means the software is running. A user can right-click on that to exit the program — thereby preventing it from recording Web surfing, e-mail and chat sessions. Users can also surf on non-IE browsers like Opera and Mozilla, although the software may index Web pages already stored before the software gets installed. Managers of public access terminals can also install software or deny users administrative privileges so they can't install unauthorized programs, such as Google's. In fact, many libraries and cybercafes already do so. Herb Jones, owner of Herb's Cyber Cafe in Oblong, Ill., tried out the desktop search program on his computer and likes it — but he won't install it on his two public terminals. In fact, he's written software to prevent customers from installing programs like it. "Otherwise, they can put on their own files if they want, a worm, a virus, anything, and you're shut down," Jones said. The FedEx Kinko's chain is also taking preventive measures. It's deploying software designed to automatically refresh its public access terminals to a virgin state for each new customer. So any errant software would disappear, as would any personal settings, files or Web caches, said Maggie Thill, a spokeswoman with FedEx Kinko's. But policies do vary, and no precaution is foolproof, warned Carol Brey-Casiano, president of the American Library Association and director of public libraries in El Paso, Texas. "We do our best to protect our patrons and computers and network, but as you can imagine, thousands of people can use public computers in a given week," she said. The new Google tool would not only aid people in spying on past patrons on public PCs. At home, users could record their kids' instant messaging conversations or view a spouse's e-mail. In the office, employers could index what their workers are up to. If each user has a separate logon to Windows, Google Desktop Search will be stymied, however. That's because only one person can install and use the software on a given computer. The power of Google's software relies on centralizing what's already saved on computers; most browsers, for instance, have a built-in cache that keeps copies of Web pages recently visited. The difference is that Google's index is permanent, though users can delete items individually. And the software makes all the items easier to find. The software can also betray users, said Annalee Newitz, policy analyst at the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Delete an e-mail or file, yet a copy remains on Google's index. Neel Mehta, leader of the X-Force research and development team at Internet Security Systems Inc., said the threats are real, though there are plenty of other products available for spying — ones better at doing the recording secretly. "It's not designed to be an illicitous tool," Mehta said of the Google software. "It's designed to be a search engine." _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... I WILL fly again.....

  23. And apparently that stategy has worked. In fact Cheney mentioned in Ohio today the biggest threat we have is a terrorist using a Nuke or Chemical agent in the middle of our cities. If that is still the biggest threat we have, then the GW admin has done nothing to lessen that threat. In fact, his imperialistic, authoritarian, war-monger attitude has made it even worse. So, despite bombing two countries into rubble, the threat is still there, as per Cheney's own words. Hell, we can't even keep the terrorists out of the highly guarded, military run green zone. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... 25. And with the reason changing every week on why we had to go to Iraq, I do not currently see that as a positive thing. If you want to toss in mass graves, etc...well, then we should be in the Sudan right NOW. Then there are the rumors of what is happening in Equitorial Guinea. And then there is the fact that the comission said SH had nothing to do with 9/11, which Bush has laid claim to. OBL is still missing. Dead or Alive and missing still makes him a threat to this country. Both Clinton and GW had chances to bring him in or take him out, and both screwed that up. I can't do anything about Clinton now....so I will help vote Bush out of office. If Kerry makes similar mistakes, then I will vote hime out of office in four years as well. _________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me....
