Should abortion be allowed in cases of rape or incest?
pirana replied to kallend's topic in Speakers Corner
The Fundies are againsat that too. I think they have a lot of very exact things that you are supposed to do and ways you are supposed to live; and anything else is blasphemy. No. But there are probably some Americans she hates. Next question please. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Isn't it kind of stupid to bash "liberals" or "liberalism"
pirana replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
Answer to OP: Looking at it over the long haul, YES! Liberalism as defined classically was the force responsible for the revolution against rule by divine right, monarchs, witrchcraft, etc. If it weren't for the liberal movements and accompanying mercantilist development of the 2nd millenium (resulting in establishment of a middle class), everyone not of royal or divine standing would still be covered with shit and eating mud pies. Liberalism has now become couched in political terms identified with advocates of a welfare state, but all of our mainstream political parties (and arguably, even those outside the mainstream) have liberalism at their roots. Next question please. Why is this substandard way of speaking becoming more prevalent?
pirana replied to birdlike's topic in Speakers Corner
Isn't Legionnaires disease (or Legionellosis) named after the members of the veterans group, the American Legion, who were staying in the Pittsburgh (or Philadelphia ?) hotel who first contracted it? VR/Marg Yes; but then we lose the romanticized image of Telly Savalas dressing down those in his command while wearing that cool hat with the drape. Spoken like a man who has not watched the film Idiocracy Watch it, and see if you can argue with what they're saying about the outbreeding that stupid people are doing over smart people. In case you were not aware, we have a record number of people in prison, and every city of any appreciable size has a significant problem with homeless "street people," although I'm not up on the numbers regarding French Legionnaires. (But Legionnaires Disease pops up on the cruise ships running out of Miami every now and then)... There are those who believe that the decadent nature of this pop-culture, combined perhaps with the way people take it with them and feed it to themselves almost intravenously in our modern age, has a lot to do with the burgeoning prison population, or slipping place in the world (far fewer graduates in tech and science fields, for starters, than lots of other countries)... Taking history lessons, or predictions for the future, from a comedic sci-fi B movie puts a person squarely in the camp of the accused. Pop culture and celebrity worship are a couple of the culprits, not the teacher. Every generation is convinced they are THE revolution; while the generation before them gasps at their notorious behavior. Meet the new rebels, same as the old rebels - - just in different garb. They exist at the margin, make a lot of noise, do manage to sometimes shape things a touch, and are then assimilated or tossed aside and forgotten. Remember the 60's, hippies, SDS, de Mau Mau, sit-ins, love-ins, and on and on. We survived, gleened just a touch from the whole experience and moved on. BTW - the last couple generations have got nothing on the Cavaliers (the generation of 1880 to 1900 - - I think I have the name right). Compared to the societal norms of the time, they were way way out there. Comparitavely, they made the hijinx of the current generation look as if they are studying for the seminary. Your fear that they will overrun civil society like a herd of breeding lemmings makes it appear you are as caught up as anyone in the very pop culture you criticize. Is there a chance that an Obama presidency might fuck with skydiving?
pirana replied to birdlike's topic in Speakers Corner
I really doubt there will be any special treatment of skydiving. It's such small potatoes in the big scheme. The price is likely to stay tied primarily to the price of fuel; where ever that happens to go. The bigger risk is of some skydiving related tragedy that might be cause for some nasty regulatory changes. I made an improvised point the other evening in my garage; then got it jammed under my fingernail while sanding a piece of furniture. Geez did that smart! This has got to be stopped! They do not contribute to society in any meaningful way other than giving little kids the willies while watching horror movies. We need to take zombies out of the voting booth and put them back in their box. The posts about lots of constant little movements and comparing it to walking or standing is right on. When we first learn something as adults (or near adults) we are very mechanical about it. We spend time concentrating on exactly where body parts are, where they need to go next, and how to execute the movement. As little kids, we learn by feel. Don't ignore the mechanics, but also try to pay attention to the feel. You are not failing, you are learning. As you get more relaxed, and are flying more by feel than focusing on putting tab A in slot B, you will become much smoother and be making finer and more timely adjustments. Soon, you will not need to think thru the mechanics of a good swoop and dock any more than you think thru the mechanics of walking a curved line on the pavement. You will just feel your way thru it. And ditto on the spending debrief time with the coach/instructor/qualified veterans at your DZ. Buy them a beer, stand around the fire, and soak up what they have. They've seen you fly and are your best source for feedback. (What you get here are tips and advice, what you get from the skilled people that actually watch you is feedback). Where on the spectrum would you put the outgasing that occurs on the way to altitude after a night of beer and tacos? Sport and a job 9 to 5 - is it possible?
pirana replied to bsrodeo540's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Depends on what you mean by "sport" jumper. For some that includes anybody that is licensed, but derives no income from skydiving; for others it is anybody who is licensed but doesn't enter competitions, or maybe some combination. I get 100 to 150 jumps per season (April thru October in WI) jumping Wednesdays and maybe one weekend per month. It's enough to be competent, safe, and have a good amount of fun; but I'm certainly not going to tear up the scene - - even locally. Everybody has their priorities. Why would I avoid that issue? I agree, the war was started on false premises against a target of opportunity. It is a huge waste of lives and money and if for no other reason, this President will most likely go down as one of the worst in history. So what has that got to do with an arguement for Universal Care. I understand that employers finance unemployment. My point had nothing to do with who finances it, but was a comparison that welfare programs, excepting for a very small number of very needy cases, should have limits. Free health care, free food, free housing, free money, etc should have set time and dollar limits. Then it's off your butt and get for yourself. Nor can you help yourself. I have seen you pounce on people for a typo or spelling error but it is clear that you don't apply it to yourself. You don't try and win people over . . . And that is this forum's winner for Understatement of the Year Award. Those that worry about the impact to the future of our society by the morons who can't speak the language - - DON'T PANIC. Don't even worry. The chances that the gangsta rapin, trash talkin crowd will have any long term effect on anything of significance is pretty much nil. What they effect is popular culture, and pop culture is what effects them. They are chasing cool in a blindered feedback loop without realizing that by attaining it they have lost it. But that is what most young people do. They'll grow up eventually; and find out that cool is defined internally, not by copying somebody else; even if it was the hottest, and also the coolest video they'd seen in days. Those that don't grow up end up on the fringes as prisoners, street people, French Foreign Legion, etc. Most kids make it out the other end alive and well; though I will acknowledge that the size of the prison population indicates that whatever my "most" is, it could stand for some improvement. Man: "You're lying." Woman: "How can you tell?" Man: "Because your lips are moving." Can'r remember where that is from. It's actually a very predictable (and almost expected) outcome that happens to so many people who experience overnight exponential growth in wealth. It's why so many celebreties (actors, athletes, and the like) have what we normal people call rags to riches to insane lives. Same thing happens to at least the simple majority of big lottery winners. It's not that they are all stupid (though some are) but more that they do not know how to behave like a rich person. Their first impulse is to go buy lots of toys, which is not a good idea if you want to remain rich. Mr Jackson's impulse was to try to become a white woman. So maybe his problem goes beyond the shock of suddenly being very rich. No jokes about or references to pedophilia. None.. No, the point of having insurance is for each individual to pay the average individual cost of care spread over a large group of people; plus an adminstrative fee of about 10% for whoever is running the program, be it a private or public entity. I still don't get why people think financing of health care should be provided by the government It is not the most universal of needs. I'd put food above health care as a basic need. Why aren't the communists amongst us calling for universal food? Aquisition of all food should be financed and administrated by the government. If you want to be mothered, why not take it all the way? What is it about health care that makes people think it should be provided for long term by the government? As a temporary safety net such as unemployment, fine. But other than that, people need to get off their but and fend a bit for themselves. With no incentives to do that we are headed toward a full-blown welfare state. Do we have a bottom line for this thread then? Work is good, so is saving, and "rich" does not equal evil. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

That seems twisted to me. It implies that work is bad, or that the goal is to not work, or something like that. Work is good. It's good for the body and mind. Though on the other side of the coin, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. I suppose it depends on a person's principles. If a person does see work as a bad thing, then I guess having the resources to never work is a good goal. My observation however is that people who see work as a bad thing live in shitholes, whine about having squat, bitch about "rich" people, and eat dogfood after the unemployment runs out and the welfare chack is a few days late. And it is a good thing everybody doesn't feel work is a bad thing. And what about the Palestinians? I figured as long as the thread had pulled in so many hot spots and past & present conflicts it might as well include the hottest spot of all. I'd think that would be a very long book; even in 6 point font and coffee table dimensions. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

I'll admit to sometimes getting caught up in emotion and feeding the "fry the scumbag" discussion. But I was really hoping to understand what is behind what appears to me to be a huge inconsistency in the attitudes towards society sending people to their death. True, in a capital punishment execution we are sending specific individuals one at a time, where as in war we send a bunch without any idea of which ones will die (but we know some portion of them will). Is that it? Does the uncertainty of who is going to die let us off the hook? Is it cool to say x number of you hundred will die, but uncool to say you John Doe will die? Is it because of emotive based biases? Does the nationalism whipped up by politicians cause us to be OK with sending thousands or even millions of young men to die; while singling people out makes us feel guilty?
