What a bunch of contrived-out-of-need-for-convenience BS. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley

Very important distinction which fundamentalists don't get, or don't want to get. If something can not be proven wrong, (as is true of most dogma) then it does not even qualify as a theory. It is more like an opinion or idea, and one which can not be proven or disproven. It is a matter of faith and is outside the realm of science. It can not compete with and should not be compared to testable theories; and basically belongs in philosophy/theology classes. On a funny note: if they were Tibetans, they would be considered freedom fighters by some. Being Uighur (whose demands are similar to the Tibetans and as legitimate one would argue), some will call them terrorists...

Hmmm your branch of christianity sure seems to be lacking in so many of the christlike virtues.... like foregiveness...humility....etc. What's this got to do with Christianity? Or any religion? It is about extermination of predatory murderous scum-of-the-Earth beings. You/your s/o's fetus tests positive for Down Syndrome - Do you abort?
pirana replied to Conundrum's topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah, the God is everywhere crowd. Drop nuclear weapons and the response is God is everywhere. Favorite marbles stuck under the piano and, God is everywhere. Genocide in Darfur, Zimbabwe, Cerbia, etc and, God is everywhere. The price of gasoline back down to $3.54 and, God is everywhere. Humans born with horrible diseases and destined for slow agonizing death, and God is everywhere. Seems like things actually have far less meaning in and of themselves when they are all explained by God is everywhere. Everything is OK because it's part of His plan? If you were all powerful and all knowing (and supoposedly kind and benevolent), would this be your plan? Strange plan. How long were you in this sport before a friend died?
pirana replied to iluvtofly's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
2 aquaintances, no friends. Never witnessed a fatality, and there have been none at the DZ I call home (20+ years). And to add a thought about frequency of friends dying; they will all die eventually. I did lose my best friend from college, my soul brother and kindred spirit; to a spinal column tumor. I lost my best astronomizing friend to a really stupid boating accident. Another good friend from college to brain cancer. One of my best party-animal friends to a heart attack in his early 50's. Don't know where I was going with that. I miss them all dearly. On the other hand; get your ya-yas out. Our time here is finite, and like a roll of TP, the closer you get to the end, the faster it seems to go. You/your s/o's fetus tests positive for Down Syndrome - Do you abort?
pirana replied to Conundrum's topic in Speakers Corner
My standard for abortion wouldn't change because of a disease. If brain wave activity reaches the level indicating a concious human being - then abortion is out. It's strictly my personal opinion and I'm not advocating it as something everyone should follow, but killing a concious and aware human, even in the womb - is just right out for me. Prior to said speculated level of brain wave action, a woman should get to decide, regardless of her reasons or what others may think because of their personal moral opinion. I think that represents roughly 1 week of our Gross National Output (and I'm not talking poop). All we have to do is give ourselves a free week. Everybody who contributes value to our economy needs to do so for one week at no charge. (All the lazies who do not contribute can just keep doing whatever it is they do). Well, take the opportunity. Doesn't matter much though, self-flagellators don't do much good anywhere they go. And must not have travelled or lived much of anywhere else if the USA is not seen as a place that is free. Nothing funny about actually being homeless, but the city finding things for them to do off the street to keep them away from the convention is fucking hilarious. Field trips for the homeless. I wonder if it is all being done by city employees or if they are contracting any of the work out. I could handle a job like that. Get a big van and just drive around picking them up. Once you've got a full load deliver them to the nearest cultural attraction. It would be like being one of those old fashioned dog catchers, except that you take them to the museum instead of the pound. Do extremely religious people piss you off?
pirana replied to skittles_of_SDC's topic in Speakers Corner
Anybody (as said by OP) that finds a way to turn damn near every conversation into a statement about how much they love Jesus, and how Jesus is everywhere, and how love is everywhere, and on and on and on. Anybody who is so obsessed with anything that your 1st reaction is to watch out for the Kool-Aid needs help. I have had a couple friends "Find" religion, or God or Jesus or love after having a very bad experience. They are the worst when it comes to Jesus is everything & everywhere behavior. I'll bet there is a positive correlation between people surviving bad motorcycle accidents and finding Jesus. He must be a bit of an ambulance chaser. Being anti-vaccine puts a person in the Tinfoil Beannie crowd. The only thing you will find to back you up are nutcase rants on Rense and sensationalist crap in the mainstream media with no supporting evidence. And maybe a few Chirocrackers. It's like the big scary clicky story on msn.com: Can Vaccines Actually Harm Your Child? Will The Earth's Core Stop Turning? View Alien Autopsy Evidence Here! The answer is a pretty firm NO, but they got you to click on it and that was their primary goal. The CDC statement quoted is the standard CYA disclaimer and can pretty much be ignored. Similar to the warning you get that you can die during orthoscopic knee surgery. Sure, could happen, but a stupid reason not to have the surgery. All very true, and the ultimate in subjective indices. Happiness that is. I heard that the happiness self-rating was highest in Denmark - - mostly because there expectations were so low. An FYI for those following the thread and that may care: the world economy is about $65 trillion. Of that, the shares break out roughly as: 20% USA 20% EU 10% China 7% Japan 2 to 4% each - India, Germany, UK, Russia, and France. Economic systems have their advantages and disadvantages. Someone claiming theirs is the way everybody should be, or the way any particular state should be, is very provincial. That includes our own generation of blue-hairs that still seem to think we should start wars to install democracy and capitalism overseas. Free markets do seem to be the most effective option for large economies. At a certain point in scale the apparatus to centrally plan a large economy becomes a burden rather than an enhancement to the actual means of production. The numbers are solid. Been known to be for ages. The problem is in the fact that both of our major parties (the only ones with a chance at winning) are afraid to buck the system. It's a vicious circle; the groups won't buck the system that made them, and the system does not allow entry to individuals that would buck it. That and the fact that every single dollar spent nowadays is seen as a right to ongoing entitlement. Just so happens that the Pentagon is currently the worst offender. If it were any other program/agency getting that piece of the pie, they would be just as unwilling to give any of it up. It is not a matter of what is being spent - - it is how we spend it. Related to another thread where someone thinks we in the USA are singlemindedly screaming for lower taxes and free gas; I'd be fine with the current level of taxes. I just want to see it spent smartly; the way a responsible family would budget their household. We have plenty to spend, we just spend a lot of it stupidly. (Our government, not my family). Socialism is what makes a good country run, capitalism makes a shitload of cash for a few and fuck all for most. You'll find the standard of living much higher in sweden and norway than it is in america. gas is more expensive there than anywhere in the world but they also earn more and pay more taxes. the whole "I wanna pay less tax and less for fuel and fuck anyone else" attitude in the USA is holding the country back. If all 300+ million people in the US would actually start giving a shit abpout each other then the country would truly be great. The only countries ahead of the USA in per capita GNI are very small and relatively small economies that have a very limited burden on their social welfare systems and/or are very specialized and somewhat closed economies. Norway is one of them, Sweden is not. There is no country anywhere near the size of the US economy that has as high or higher GNI. And Sweden is actually below the US. Your other statements are just a matter of opinion, and everybody is entitled to their own; but your statement about income is very misleading. Bermuda and Lichtenstein have much higher income per person too, but it is foolish to compare them to economies of scale. I have no wish to fuck everyone else; but I would like to see more people take more responsibility for their lot in life. That is the crux of freedom and liberty, and it meshes nicely with free markets and capitalism. Being mothered from cradle to grave fits very nicely with central planning and socialism. An employer should definitely be allowed to fire a person who refuses to do all parts of their job. Cherry picking amongst tasks based on a personal perspective on a highly subjective "moral" principle is absolute BS. If allowed to happen, there would be no end to the abuse of such a subjective right. If the owner does it, or lets employees get away with it, then they should be prosecuted for discrimination. Reminds me of the Muslim taxi drivers at our airport who refuse to take a fare because they have booze with them or a dog. Thankfully, the Airport Commission informed them they would need to seek employment elsewhere if they refuse to do their job for certain customers based on religious objections. Worse yet, the Muslim checkout person that holds up the entire line because some non-Muslim employee has to be found and take over the register because somebody has a pound of bacon in their cart. Why can't we handle this like we do Santa Claus and once kids get old enough to have gained enough common sense to know something is amiss just fess up, let them know it is a cherished tradition, but that it is time to move on to adulthood. p.s. - Most pharmacies are privately owned? Maybe a regional difference, but my observations indicate AT LEAST 80% of them here are either part of a hospital or clinic, or are one of the 2 very big chains. Probably due to my very non-religious and naturalist approach to things, I hardly find it worth freeing someone who mudered civilians in order to obtain dead bodies. But aside from the main source of my bias being my opinion that dead bodies are nothing more than worm food; I think it is a huge tactical mistake. Might as well paint bull-eyes on the roofs of their civilian population that live within striking distance of a border. Not only that, but Israel has just confirmed that their soldiers, even if tortured and killed and kept on ice for a few months or years serve as currency for the enemy to buy the freedom of enemy terrorists. Seems like an awful lot to give up so that they can stick to a religious principle and apply it to the bones of dead soldiers. me too, it is amazing how much he has fucked up everything possible, what I don't get is why some people can get their heads out of where it don't shine and see all the damage he has done to this country. And yes CGOBJ and lied to congress to cover it up, and I don't give a flying fuck about that, it has nothing to do with bush and does not go any way to justify bush's actions. He has walked all over the constitution, he fucked up in iraq, he is fucking up Afghanistan (insufficient resources) he fucked up the economy in so many ways, hes doubled the national debt, just to mention a few and the next president is going to have to figure out how to get out of the worst recession that we have had since the 1920s. And still some people will support him because they are dick heads who are too proud to admit they were wrong or so single issue focused that they cant see the whole picture. I can't wait until January and the recovery can begin. I think both candidates individually have more integrity than the entire bush administration. When i came to the USA I supported the idiot, I am embarrassed to have made such an error of judgment. Yeah, I'm usually fairly pragmatic in my seeking to understand the momentum of history and large change-resistant systems in which these people operate; but this guy seems to have erred so badly so many times on a personal level that there really is no such excuse. It would be interesting to see what history has to say about him from a distance. My guess is that it is going to be very bad. I strongly agree that the difference in principles and level of integrity regardless of which candidate is elected will be completely different than what we have seen from Bush. He's more of a slightly ignorant but benevolent dicatator (I know this will hurt but I know what's good for you, I think), than he is a true leader. Let's hope we've learned our lesson about electing people with a dynastic approach to high office.
