  1. For me, the Bibles main purpose is for individual edificaiton, growth, and providing an escape from sinful mediocrity. My life is a validation of that. Beyond that, its meaning becomes shrouded in controversy. ...... Agreed. If taken as great stories providing lessons for humanity, it is a very good book. 2. Goggles recommended. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  3. Why, God of course. He wrote a Book, you ought to read it sometime without presupposing what it might say. ....... Read it. Interesting book, good stories; but not something to be read as literal truth. Good at providing some lessons, preposterously bad as a source for practical information. 4. www.answers.com/topic/whine www.answers.com/whinging Thank you; I'd never heard the term whinge. Thought it was one of those slang internet terms. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  5. OK, now that I have caught up, what is whinging? Whining and winging? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  6. I wouldn't call it a cure, but belief is definitely on the wain. Humans lived for many tens of thousands of years without anything like religion. Religion morphed out of respect for living elders which led to respect for dead elders which led to worship. As survival became more a matter of learning and accumulated knowledge, worship and the dogmatic beliefs that accompany it became less relevant. Today they are matters of ritual, adding no knowledge or information. It took thousands of years (roughly 10K) to go from beginning to quickly waining. Change happens very slowly; one death at a time as a famous man once put it. A few hundred more years, maybe faster given that the one constant we seem to be able to count on is the acceleration of change, and religion will most likely be settled back where it belongs, in the realm of spirituality; with no say whatsoever on the realities of the natural world. There is a place for spirituality, but organized religion has clearly stepped way out of those bounds; insisting on all kinds of silly bullshit it can not back up with anything more than "cuz." It would be so interesting to see how society evolves over the next 20 or 30 generations; but in accordance with what the man once said, if we do not die, change is stifled. 7. Good point. Do you still believe in the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, Easter Bunny, Great Pumpkin, etc? If no, why not? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. Explain that statement. Logic is a tool. It is not a characteristic that the Universe can have or not have. Logic is a tool used by humans as part of their attempts to discover facts. Put it this way; I could say there is nothing illogical about the Universe. They are both pretty meaningless statements. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  9. You're correct that sarcasm is frequently difficult to read over the internet ... perhaps that's a lesson that applies across the board, eh?
  10. Lie. Lie. Lie. Hilarious lie. Nonsense article attacking a barely recognisable, distorted strawman of evolutionary theory. Believe me, the ignorance here goes in only one direction. Fixed it. They're supposedly all lies yet you provide no evidence that they are.....I don't have that kind of faith to accept anything without evidence. Lots of evidence. You are either unwilling or unable to go get it. There has been hundreds of years of research by many thousands of very well studied people; but you flippantly discard it as "no evidence." That tells me you have a belief that prevents you from accepting anything that counters it as evidence. Essentially, your definition of evidence is anything that supports your point of view. 11. It is the Wisdom and Reality of God. Who is the creative and sustaining force of the universe. It is antithetical to the wisdom and reality we create when God is removed from our lives. ........... Says who? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  12. I disagree strongly on a couple of these points. Maybe your statements are a little too absolute for me. For me, what is right is based on logic, not an emotion. Make it harder to get a divorce? Why would you want to force people to stay together? Marriage is a human invention. Humans were around for a very long time before they invented the institution of marriage. Occurs to me you have some dogmatic beliefs acting as very strong filters that lead to some highly questionable conclusions - - especially the one about the origins of marriage. 13. That lengthy post is mostly very vague; like the stuff politicians throw at us. I'd like to hear some specific action items they plan in order to "rejuvenate" the sport. (BTW, I don't think it needs rejuvenating. It is not mainstream, never will be, and shouldn't be). The only specific issue out there so far is the desire to exit at 400'. That is self-aggrandizement for them and their sponsor and does nothing for the sport as a whole other than provide the opportunity for something spetacularly bad to happen in front of a big crowd. So we have read their platform statement. What specific action plans do they have aside from performing 400' demo exits? 14. Yes, failure needs to be an option. We have processes in place to deal with that (things like bankruptcy and unemployment). All bailing out does is delay and spread out the pain over time; while minimizing the incentives for business leaders to make good decisions. Better to let them fail, bite the bullet, and get on with things. Saddling the economy with trillions of dollars of additional debt is a much worse option in the long run. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  15. So true. The only sure thing that comes from resolving a matter via brute force is that the problem will resurface again in short order. Guns are great for killing people; but they do not kill ideologies. Ideologies change in small increments as widely held beliefs change. You'd have to nuke everybody from the Bosphorus to the Indus to solve the problem by force. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  16. I think USPA should distance themselves from such stupidity; and the membership should vote to make sure we do not elect people who feel otherwise. As someone mentioned, they can look to the FAA for their permissions. If the FAA says no I'd give a big: "Duh, no shit!" This appears to be a bunch of young egomaniacal hotshots who are so hungry for glory, fame, and cash they would put the public image of the sport on the line to get it. If it was about personal challenge and accomplishment, they'd go off somewhere and quietly make it happen; then post the video. Instead, they want to do it for their sponsor and with a crowd. That says a lot. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  17. Depends on what way. I am all in on the war against The Propogation of Ignorance; which is heavily fueled by certain elements of organized religion. It's not a hard-on or hate. It is just my personal diligence, doing my part to ensure my kids and future generations are not taken back into the dark ages of oogie-boogie, wooo-wooo, witch doctor bullshit. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  18. More than 1 skydive, and willing to take a peek. No sociology degree; but do have several years experience working with wayward teens via a community outreach program. PM if I fit your bill. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  19. My 11 year-old is already like that. Very free-spirited kid and recognizes that at the DZ and people there. (It's like pulling teeth trying to get her out of there when it gets to be adults-only time). " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  20. Being honest doesn't mean you waive the right to privacy. If there is something you wish not to disclose, you have the right to say so, as diplomatically or as bluntly as you see fit given the situation. Telling somebody something is none of their business is not being dishonest. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  21. The Electoral College amplifies the results of the popular vote far out of scale from the popular due to the vast majority of states using a "winner take all" method of distributing votes. Because of this, the Electoral College should never be used when describing a "landslide" victory. I got a different take on this. Election strategies nowadays can pretty much ignore the national popular vote totals. Because of how the electoral college works, the formula to win the presidency is to win: 1 - Bos-Wash corridor 2 - Chicago-Detroit corridor 3 - West coast Win all 3 and you win. Lose all 3 and you lose. Split those up and you have a race; which then brings Florida and Texas into play. Most of the rest are just along for the ride. With the huge urban centers we now have, the overall popular vote is irrelevant. Only state by state victories matter; and if they win the right states, even by slim margins; the other (smaller) states don't matter. A candidate could get zero votes in 3/4 of the states, be well under a national majority, and still deliver an electoral shellacing. 22. You to young to remember Quayle? Let's not forget that Lyndon Johnson could not find Indo-China on a map of the world until after he became VP. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  23. Is that a religious interpretation of skydiving, or a sky-divine interpretation of religion? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  24. I though she was no where to be seen in the last week! Yeah., real strong! They were obviously restraining her as much as they reasonably could toward the end. Did someone allude to them keeping her muzzled as hurting the campaign?! Kidding right? Keeping her muzzled was the only thing they could do. Who knows how much more stupid shit she would have utterred had they given her free rein. She was worse than Reagan (who thought missles could be recalled) and Bush together. Could you imagine the 3 of them in a strategic conversation? They'd me creating all kinds of new words (perhaps a new language), reshaping world geography, invading countries with similar names or similar shaped coastlines. That would make a good comedic skit. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  25. No freakin' way. I do not put a lot of stock in the American public to see past their emotional biases; but to me the election night result proved that even they could see this goofball coming. I don't see her being a threat to anyone ever again. My prediction is she will have a tough time not fading into total obscurity. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
