  1. I would guess most atheists do not believe that anything like a soul (that survives after the biological functions have ceased) even exists; so probably wouldn't believe in it. I do think that because we continue on in the memory of living people, and have at least some small influence in how they lead their lives, that the "spirit" of the person continues on beyond death. But not reincarnation in the sense that those who have it as part of their religion would believe. Beliefs echo down thru the generations, spreading like ripples, ever-widening and ever-weakening. I also think there is a connection between the belief in reincarnation and the tangible handing down of beliefs from generation to generation. Similar to the idea many anthropologists have that reverence for the elders of the tribe in life evolved into reverence to the elders in death to reverence to spirits to reverence to dieties. It would explain a lot. 2. What does this mean: "coin checked him." " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  3. Where's the thread? Where's the thread? WHO STOLE THE THREAD???!!!! Oh, never mind. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  4. That is what organizing a skydive is like. I've been on those. Somebody is trying to throw together a 10-way and hollers for everybody to meet in front of the hangar. Half show up with gear, 3 are still having a smoke, a couple aren't yet manifested. you're just starting to get the exit lined up and hear the 15 minute call. 4 people depart to get geared up. They return and somebody strolls off to hit the can. You finally get the exit lined up, it's now a 10 minute call and somebody decides they better manifest and trots off while another figures they better go finish packing. Finally everybody is back, you get the 5 minute warning, the plan is almost understoofd by all when a tandem student suddenly changes their mind and opts for the video, leaving the group without their organizer. Getting on the plane everybody decides to do solo 5K hop-n-pops. 5. Yeah, these issues are far from black and white, but mostly because of the mistakes, foibles, and idiocy of a small minority. Then the politicians step in with their vision of what people should be like (usually like them) and ruin everything. Funny that those two groups (the undisciplined abusive minority and the know-it-all politicians) have somehow formed an unknowing coalition that is constantly eroding the freedoms of norml people. For the record, by far the most common element I see causing problems in people's lives is alcohol abuse - and I'm not for making alcohol illegal. So I guess that places me in the camp for not being nannied and preserving freedom at the risk that some are gonna get hurt. (But that is no reason to stop trying to educate or teach moderation). 6. Don't you get tired of being such a broken record? The Government DOES have the right to step in when what you put into your body affects in an adverse way the lives of other people. Just bringing the conversation back ON topic. And I would add that all food that causes REALLY smelly farts should be made illegal. I'm not talking your run-of-the-mill fart; I mean those real nasty post Chili & Beer festival sour squirty ones that even the producer can not handle. The impact to others from that kind of thing IS a crime. 7. Really? Maybe it is that the withdrawal symptoms are spread out, so it is not as overtly observable. So, yes, over time the person can experience withdrawal, and according to the DSM, still meet criteria for the diagnosis in argument, 30 days after withdrawal has ended. This is also probably why they give a 28 day window for withdrawal because of how long it can take to slowly withdrawal from the drug. If I am wrong, please show me evidence supporting your claim there is NO withdrawal symptoms. And studies have shown that squirrels forced to inhale the smoke of an ounce of marijuana each day for 3 straight months tend to lose their sense of self-preservation and play with their nuts instead of storing them. I have waited so long to use that. Thank you stayhigh. x " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  8. Interesting piece (by Mr. Buckley). Very well said. " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  9. I can argue that point quite well, thanks. B/c during the 6 years I was a therapist I saw it day in and day out. Parents baked, kids living in squalor. True, parents who OCCASIONALLY smoke a bowl can LATER still be excellent parents. The key word in your post was LATER. it's DURING the high that is the problem. Simple solution - don't get "baked." Same difference as someone having a glass of wine or two in the evening versus drinking a bottle of Jack every night. Should we make it all illegal so that people do not have to exercise discipline and moderation in their behavior. Fast boats get used to break laws; should they all be outlawed? Some people who have and use pot do stupid stuff. Some people who have and use guns do stupid stuff. Both should be completely illegal? Which wouldn't matter to some of those people, since they wil find other stupid stuff to do without pot or guns. 10. Saw a similar line recently. A guy is getting mirandized by a female cop. She says "Anything you say can and will be used against you. Anything to say?" Guy says "Boobies!" 11. I can herd cats. At least that's my euphemism for keeping a dozen 9 and 10 year old girls organized long enough to complete a basketball game. Sure, doewsn't have the same feel as flying a rescues chopper - but you try it. 12. Heartily agree. Dispose of body as cheaply as possible and spend the money in a useful manner (party, toys, invest - whatever). 13. But there is the argument to be made that drug use/abuse isn't a victimless crime: look at parents who neglect their kids while using (applies to alcohol too for that matter). Or harming people while driving under the influence... I think you got to focus on the actual crime without extrapolating to the excuse given (or implied) for doing it. Plenty of sober people beat their kids. The crime isn't in getting high (well, OK, it is a crime for now) it's in beating the kids. 14. In what situation and with what objective in mind? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
  15. You'd think we'd have learned by now that prohibition of substances like this and persecution against victimless crimes doesn't work. Never has. 16. That's pretty close, but I was thinking of the fine structure constant; a dimensionless measurement used in the calculation of the electromagnetic reaction of elementary particles. Think of it like the speed of light in a vacumm, except without any dimensions attached. And I'll be thtye worked that into the Simpsons episode. 17. Chatting with a criminal defense attorney this weekend. He commented that alcohol and hard drugs are his stock in trade - explaining that almost all his clients had either been under the influence or were acting out in their quest for said goodies. He said if it weren't for alcohol, he would not be in business. Marijuana on the other hand provides him with almost no clients at all. 18. 42 I get. 69 I get. 137 I get. 337? " . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
