  1. I didn't realize there were people still following the cargo cults. I may have to list that as my religion on next year's census.
  2. I for one would like to see a full blown examination in an adversarial trial like theatre. The problem is of course to find a non-biased judge. While the evidence of increased CO2, and the models certainly predict poor outcomes, no one has satisfactorily (to me anyway) explained why the medieval warm period was one of prosperity in Europe and North America.
  3. You gotta think that sooner or later universities will stop admitting students who have not been educated.
  4. I have been warned several times about sharing my theological views at work. Well, within earshot of the bosses wife anyway. Its funny how strident people are, seeing as she spends all Sunday, every Sunday at the DZ and not at church.
  5. While the goals in Afghanistan may be laudable, we need to be realistic. This war cannot be won without invading Pakistan, and possibly Iran. The future historical term "The Second Hundred Years War" comes to mind.
  6. While I agree with the sentiment I think this is a strong example of an organization losing their focus.
  7. Is there any real difference between what Hustler wants to do and what CNN perps and victims channel does? Whether they are as graphic is not the issue; at the core they are doing the same thing. That entire channel earns its living off sensationalism of crime with a particular emphasis on juvenile victims. Apparently it sells.
  8. ,..and of course Voulez vous coucher avec moi, se soir?
  9. Are you willing to contribute another 5 or 6 percent of your income to pay for it?
  10. No Quincy it isn't still that simple. If we made the laws exclusively based on the views of the victims the list of capital crimes would be extensive. I live in a country where a lot of things are closed to the public due to privacy concerns. Often I get the feeling that as a result the deals that the privileged make are kept from the public eye that way. You may say that this is a completely different situation, and it is, but the government must tread very carefully around the concept of curtailing freedom of information.
  11. No need to wait for the end of the term in this case. The fact is the political will is not there in the population to cut the deficit. Obama is not going to be able to do it and it is not certain his successor will have the ability.
  12. I agree that night tandems arent as safe as tandems during the day. I was merely interested on the legal side here. The USPA has no legal authority. The FARs do not specifically ban them.
  13. My own experience suggests that injuries are much less common on tandem first jumps than solo first jumps. On the other hand I have been injured far more frequently on tandem jumps.
  14. What is truely ironic is that anyone would flock to a metropolis of around 10 000 people (which Whitehorse was when she was a child) for access to big city anything. I do think that bringing up a 40 year old example is actually stretching things. The problems in health care in most Canadian jurisdictions are immensely more acute than they were in the 60's and '70s. The death panels weren't in place or anything.
  15. Well, we could have built LRT to Richmond (wait, that was part of it), we could have improved the most deadly highway in the province (nevermind, that was part of the 8B as well), uhm,.. build some low rental housing to mitigate the worst homeless problem in the country (uh, tick, done), improve the recreational infrastructure, mount an awesome tourism promotion campaign, and throw a big party to get the rest of the world to pop by and help pay for it all. Naa, bad idea.
  16. So you have no intention of answering the question. Got it. Don't be embarrassed. Most other people chicken out at it, too. Canuck is right. We do not live in a republic. I for one have no desire to either. Our constitutional monarchy works just fine for me. There have been a few attempts to replace the "first past the post" single seat riding legislatures, but the proposed "improvements" all have their warts as well.
  17. Canuck is so anti-Liberal you do need to sift through his diatribes carefully. However in this case he is pretty much right on. Why should Iggy be elected? Did the Czar ask his grandfather to be elected as minister of education? I think not. Have you never heard of noblesse olige?
  18. I have long been of the opinion that people obsess about throwing the pilot chute down on IADs. As long as the pilot chute is released after the jumper is away it will be going down. If it is released from a point above the tail it may cause a problem, but as long as it starts out below the tail, it will not go up unless it is pivoting up after encountering resistance (the pin or the tree rings). In this case the j/m clearly releases after the jumper is away. I do have a problem with her not actually placing the p/c outside the aircraft.
  19. There are alternatives. http://en.video.canoe.tv/video/news/world/1896809959/porn-for-bibles-exchange-riles-texas-campus/69502744001?canoerid=MKTYLB
  20. So do you have to sign the card to be a member or after a certain percentage of unemployed in your neighbourhood join are you automatically a member and have the dues come off your unemployment benefits?
  21. Yep, we are tied for the most gold at a winter Olympics ever. What we lacked was the depth of talent that larger countries showed. Congratulations to the US, they smoked the competition in total medals this year,... ...but we got the most gold. Did we mention that? The games will certainly lose money. The construction was done during the boom that drove construction materials and (especially) labour rates through the roof, followed by the bust that left some tickets unsold. The weather produced extra costs, particularly on Cypress Mountain, site of the freestyle and snowboard events. They shipped in a lot of snow. They also lost a lot of spectator sales as they had to close some viewing areas as the snow they were built upon melted. The third big factor was the unprecedented $900B security bill; outrageous but what are you going to do. On the other hand the blow from the recession was softened considerably due to the preparations. Call it stimulus. BTW we got the most gold.
  22. Since when did you own Orca Bay Sports and Entertainment? That building was built with 100% private money, on time and on budget. Lucky: You must be kidding. If you think The IOC takes pissant shit like this into account over billion dollar + decisions you really don't understand.
  23. The IOC has been a bit edgy ever since the US Hockey team trashed the athletes' village a few years back.
  24. You guys keep talking about drinking. It is illegal to smoke in that building and British Columbians are serious about anti-smoking laws (for tobacco). The issue is they disrespected the venue.
