Dead Marine's father ordered to pay protesters' legal costs
Andrewwhyte replied to lost_n_confuzd's topic in Speakers Corner
There was never a case. (Strong hint, video cameras are not allowed in Canadian court rooms) Sorry, does the Levant inquisition set any kind of precedent in Canada? The human rights tribunal is below the court system. Precedent can only flow from the court of appeals or the SCOC. In this particular case the plaintiff withdrew his complaint. The system is used frequently by a very few people in order to put a chill into peoples speech, and has been very effective. Despite Skydekker's opinion about how "the system works" the cost of defending oneself has been a very effective stick wielded by these people and groups. When Mr. Levant fought back the bullies backed away, stating they didn't understand how strongly Canadians felt about freedom of expression. -

No other publication in the country was willing to publish the cartoons. Many because they didn't see it as part of their mission. Many more because they were afraid of the repercussions. This little event caused Levant many tens of thousands of dollars. You think the lawyer sitting beside him in that room was free? For most Canadians the idea of being hauled into a inquisition like that is enough for them to forego their rights. We know about this case because Levant had the courage (and the resources) to fight it. Not everyone does win, you just don't hear about those cases. What is really sad is that the government will not change the human rights law because Levant's own people, the B'nai B'rith, is pressuring the Tories to leave it alone. Intolerant Islam buttressed by intolerant Judaism; wonderful. -

It doesn't work. The Levant case shows it doesn't work. Mark Steyn/McLean's magazine is another example. -

I suggest you watch this video. It is Ezra Levant facing the government of Alberta grand inquisitor after publishing cartoons deemed offensive to a dead profit. This is why the Canadian limits on free speech are inherently evil. Personally I think Levant is a bit of a dink, but he is my hero over this incident. His defense is brilliant. -

I am not recommending violence. I am suggesting that anyone with that much hate in their soul should be fairly easy to provoke into violence. A gay couple standing right beside them necking ought to do it. Even a mild assault could be fairly construed as a hate crime. The hate these people have for gays is pretty obvious. -

Perhaps some patriotic members of the gay community could engage in a little public tenderness in these folks presence. I'm sure a little hate crime activity shouldn't be too hard to provoke. -

Exactly! If people are unhappy with the results of the constitution they can lobby to have it changed. Other than that people need to recognize that this truly is the price of freedom. -

I am not a fan of letting people jump with me on tandems unless I have jumped with them a bunch before and know how they will perform. If the jumper does not know the tandem passenger my general feeling is about 1000 jumps or so. Really a jumper has no right to impose themselves on someone else's first jump experience, but the imposition can be positive so I am ok with it if they are a senior jumper and I know them. If they are friends with the student my number is 500 jumps although I have bent that rule for jumpers that I have jumped with and trust. I am much more lenient for a bellyflyer than a freeflyer.

Read WILL by G. Gordon Liddy. The dirty tricks committee of the GOP in '72 is famous for botching the Watergate break in, but that was far from their only activity. They contemplated having a dirty hippy piss on the carpet in McGovern's hospitality suite in front of reporters. I think Bob Haldeman put the Kaibosh on that one because he was due to have that suite the following week as the GOP convention was also at the Watergate hotel.

I've told you before, we are not a republic.

I know someone who pulled the chicken handle when the TM wasn't taking care of business. Admitedly it was during phase II and not a refresher, but it happened. I would like to believe that that certainly would never happen to me, but hubris has killed more than one skydiver.

Are federal laws subject to state constitutions? That seems unlikely. Regardless, hopefully this ruling pushes congress towards more general tort reform rather than sectoral ones where they protect the interests of their contributors (notably the AMA and the gun manufacturers) while leaving bad laws of general application to be suffered by individuals and smaller industries. I am not holding my breath.

Canuck is right. The hate speech laws do not encompass Americans. Bigotry against Americans is accepted without exception in this country.
-
My plan is to do 3 jumps on my own gear followed by one tandem with a senior jumper. Yes we will wear the chicken handles.

Haven't got time right now to look it up, but in the '80s two high profile cases of anti-Jew nuts went to the SCOC. Jim Keegstra was charged with disseminating "false news" by teaching his high school class that the holocaust did not happen. The law was thrown out. At the same time Earnst Zundle was charged with promoting hatred against an identifiable group. The same court upheld this law. Both votes were 5 to 4 with one justice swinging. You can say the Jews are assholes, but you cannot say we should kill them.

Actually he didn't threaten her. He gently reminded her that the limits to freedom of speech are different here than in the US. The truth is she has said things in the past that could get her into trouble here. BTW University VPs don't press criminal charges, prosecutors do.

Go the video store and rent "Fandango." All your questions will be answered.

the really sad part is that 800 people showed up..... Damn them for not properly hating any conservative, anyway!! I vote conservative, but I wouldn't go to listen to a lightweight like that speak. I really think Limbaugh, Hannity, et al understand that they are entertainers and while the general thrust of their arguments is true to their beliefs, the extent of the bombast is just the show business. I don't think she gets that.

"Time-In-Sport" as criterion for instructional ratings?
Andrewwhyte replied to GLIDEANGLE's topic in Instructors
In the example you cited not much. However in my experience Slow Sam does not make 10 jumps every 3rd weekend. He makes 3 or 4 jumps every weekend. He packs, he helps gear up students, he bothers the rigger with endless questions, he hangs around the fire listening to the gray beards tell lies. This is what makes him better prepared than Fast Freddie. -
If Joe reduced the pay for tandem masters I would suspect it is because he has the supply to do so. Tough times in southern Ontario probably mean more part timers indicating they want to work more this year. It has nothing to do with "fair" (whatever that is) and more to do with supply and demand.

Give them a little more time to work the data - you know, revising the 30's downward, getting rid of the 'warm blip' in the 40's, stuff like that - and I'm sure they'll be able to show how there was a HUGE surge of man-made CO2 around 1000AD (see 'histo5.png', above). This is why a court like setting might be useful. The data cooking scandal of last year has the ability to do huge amounts of damage to the general population's confidence in the scientific method. We already seem to have a population that is retreating into religious superstition, both here in North America and abroad. The way forward must be scrutinized for veracity every step of the way. The forces of ignorance are ever vigilant.
