  1. You may not like it but it is often the truth. Sparky Although it usually is an important (or the prime) factor, it very rarely is the only one. Just as the Swiss cheese model is used for other types of aviation it should be for skydiving. Yes pulling would have prevented the fatality, but so would have more attentive instructor/ jump-mates, an aad, a better fitting rig, et cetera, et cetera. Quit trying to lay it off on something/someone else. You can have the best instructors giving you the best instructions; you can have an audible in each ear, 2 altimeters, good friends looking out for your young ass, a custom tailored rig make of mink. But if you don’t pull you are just as dead as the guy who is self taught wearing a B-4 cheepo and chest mount. That is the one any only thing a student or experienced jumpers needs to remember…….pull before impact. . But then of course even if you pull you can still die and that’s a reality people seem unwilling to accept. Sparky Then why even read the incidents forum? You know the answer before you click. Every time.

  3. Incorrect. No-one was asking to be allowed to engage in public displays of affection. All that was asked for was not to be discriminated against based on their sexuality. Military service is supposed to be based on honor, sacrifice and trust, yet that very military was forcing people to live a lie. There's no special right being granted here.
  4. One thing I have constantly heard outside the country, but seldom if ever by US commentators is that the policy of giving tax breaks on mortgage service costs is a subsidy on debt that made the crash inevitable. I was hearing this as early as the late '90s.
  5. Sounds like just a dosage issue. I would be curious to know what the back side of the episode is like. This would be particularly important on a long campaign like Everest, or a week long bigway record attempt.
  6. Canucks look similar to last year; good enough to win the division, not good enough to win the cup. But you never know.
  7. They have accused Canada of being a dangerous place for Iranians to travel.
  8. I will eventually replace my 12 year old factory diver with another factory diver. I have never seen anything I like better. I have had my shield flip up in freefall. More often than not it was on exit because I forgot to close it. it just slides out of the way and can be refastened with a quick motion.
  9. My problem is this: 1. Some traitor in the US system created the link. Ok they got at least one of them; clearly a crime. 2. Asange et al publish it on the web. No one is sure whether they can be charged under US law or not (no warrant has been issued so I would presume not). 3. The New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, Toronto Globe and Mail, et al publish parts selected for bombastic merit. No problem! Furthermore the press goes on to explain how they are virtuous (as opposed to the internet scum) because they filter the information for what is newsworthy. Ya right.
  10. I think you have it wrong. This guys problem is that SA is throwing donated toys in the trash rather than give them away because they thing the toys' message is wrong. Dude isn't trying to stop SA from giving anything away. He is saying they should give away what is given to them for that express purpose. "OPEN YOUR WALLET AND BUY A TOY FOR US TO GIVE AWAY! WE WILL PASS IT THROUGH OUR CHRISTIAN PURITY FILTERS AND IF IT PASSES IT WILL MAKE AN UNDERPRIVILEGED BOY OR GIRL HAPPY ON CHRISTMAS MORNING. Otherwise we will deposit your contribution in the landfill."
  11. If price is your main decision point then maybe you could head out and have a look. Other than that you have one of the two or three top DZs on the planet just a bit further down the road. Furthermore Skydive AZ has a wind tunnel which has no rival as a training tool. Most of us around the world would kill to have a tunnel to train our students in. You would be foolish to pass up the opportunity to start your skydiving career on such a firm basis. Have fun whatever you decide.
  12. Hi Robbo23, Sounds like you are doing fine. My roomie has MS. He has had one severe attack so far with near blindness the main symptom but some balance issues as well. He has also struggled with the medication at times. Nonetheless he has continued to train with his 4-way team as well as packing and load organizing. Will it ground him some day? Who knows, but not today.
  13. I was thinking the student would end up wearing a specific 'student' suit that has an even smaller wing.
  14. I have received a few tips from AFF students over the years, but it is the exception rather than the rule. Always it was from those who could afford it (above average incomes). As others have said, bring beer.
  15. You are starting to sound like a bureaucrat. SAFETY is not a binomial choice; risk aversion is not the same thing as risk management. Having video increases the risk, are you in favour of banning video? When the Icarus tandem canopies came out and people started swooping tandems I was horrified. Induced speed landings are more dangerous than straight in ones. We learned a long time ago that toggle whipping sport canopies was like fishing for wheelchairs, how could it possibly be justified on tandems. I waited with trepidation for the sad evidence to pour in. I am somewhat stubborn and clung to that position for years and years as millions of tandems were toggle whipped. Eventually I was forced to admit that the rash of crippled and killed tandem passengers and TMs has not materialized. Although I am not willing to sacrifice my knees for stand-up landings I have noticed that when I do them many of my students get a value worth pursuing. I now engage in induced speed landings. Tandem wing suit jumping really is taking this to a new level of "plug and play" adventuring. It certainly sounds like something I will never do, but I am not willing to say it should never be done. Should it be the norm at various centres? Absolutely not! That does not mean that it cannot be an option for some students who are interested in a higher level of adventure and are willing to accept a higher level of risk. Someone asked above whether there had been several hundred test jumps done with experienced wingsuiters before introducing it to the public. Good question. Icarus and the Australian federation should embark on that if it has not already been done. The APF did a great job of leading the way on hand-cam, let's hope they do the same for wingsuit tandems. How much tandem experience do you need? How much wingsuit experience? How many practice jumps should you do? How much additional training will be needed for the student? These are all questions that need to be answered before the thing takes off as opposed to a muddle through approach. The container manufacturers in the US are no doubt going to fight this for legal reasons. It will remain to be seen whether they will actually take action against TIs who engage in it. If they are too aggressive they risk losing market share to less risk adverse European manufacturers. For those who are accusing practitioners of endangering the entire industry (similar arguments we heard over hand-cam) I would only say that people in other countries do not owe North Americans anything when it comes to our foolish litigation laws. I am really uncertain whether this is feasible for large groups of the public from a technical point of view, but I am very sure the market exists. I also think it looks like a great training tool for teaching wingsuiting to experienced jumpers.
  16. Backwards. The more custody you have, the more support you receive. The less you have, the more you pay. I if you have no access to the kid you are the sole payer. If you are the custodial parent you are the sole payee.
  17. That lettuce had to die just so you could have a salad! Have a heart, eat a rock.
  18. Since the D is not required for anything except a course facilitator (I/E) rating, that would be all you need. I have a C license and that was good enough for Strong and UPT for tandem ratings. CSPA used to have an E license but deleted it when they re-did them about 6 years ago. They have never had an F license.
  19. People forget whose side the republicans were on during WWI.
  20. I presume you mean the position of her left hand. If she was taught to use both hands on the cut-away she could easily be transitioning from hands on the cutaway to hands on the reserve. Not the way I teach but still not wrong.
  21. Another key is that the CSPA DZ insurance will not be valid if a Canadian resident does not have CSPA. Most dzs will not allow that.
  22. Thats great to know, but I think I'd still like to have an idea about what those things are. Maybe know for sure at least one or two things that I'd like to attend. It just seem strange that they have zero information up two weeks before tickets go up $100. Someone must be booked already. I have been to 2 symposiums, '99 and '03. I can't remember which one I attended which talk but I remember going to a seminar by Brian Germaine on canopy dynamics, Ian Bobo and Shannon Pilcher gave one on swooping, Omar on structured learning for free-flyers, a couple of french physicists on alternating forces between shoulders during a spinning malfunction, Rob Warner on re-lining a canopy, Roger Nelson on Training methods for canopy training and on BoC throw outs rather than rip-cords for AFF. AAD introduced the Vigil, Bill Booth the Sky-hook and magnetic riser covers, PD the Navigator Canopy, all in the lecture halls. John LeBlanc gave a trio of lectures on canopy Flight. there was a guy talking about Aircraft financials, another about press relations. John Sherman gave a rambling lecture about some new things in the industry (I remember reserve pins were topical that year). I am not a rigger so I didn't attend any of the "how to sew this" or "how to pack that" talks although there were many. Hope this helps.
  23. So does every employer in the US have the right to curb their employees' political activities or is this somehow limited to the press? Is that through specific legislation or is their judicial precedent?
