  1. I thought he defeated the Saxons. He was a Norman of Frankish descent. Who exactly are the "English?" Are they the Britons? According to Churchill's "History of the English speaking Peoples," they were 90% eliminated by the Saxons. Probably the remnants were intermingled with the other Celts in the Welsh mountains. Are they the Romans? Are they the Anglo-Saxons? Bloody German interlopers. Perhaps the Danes, the Vikings, the Normans or even the Huguenots that followed are the true English. As long as you don't include those damn Pikeys they all have a claim.
  2. The Executives of the banking sector tend to be outliers within the context of the private sector. The CEO of Rio Tinto has delivered 500% share price growth over the last eight years while Goldman Sachs has been flat yet the CEO of GS makes more money.
  3. The brotherhood has not been a supporter of terrorism against the west in the past as far as I can tell. That said I think the Shiites and the Christians have good reason to be concerned. Is it any worse than the BJP getting elected in India or the crazy Jews (not sure about party names) having the balance of power in Israel? Not sure. Since The US just lived through eight years of a fundamentalist Christian and Canada presently has one I think we just have to watch what people actually do and say rather than what the crazy wings (both sides) of the chattering classes say about them.
  4. Makes perfect sense. Most people are more interested in how much gas it takes to go on a trip of a certain distance. Also it's easier to calculate averages this way - such as a 100km trip that is 50km highway and 50km city. Have to disagree with you there Doc'. I have a 50 litre tank. What I really care about is how long until I need to fill it. It usually crosses several trips of 10km or less as I live in the city (as do most people in Canada). When planning a longer trip I usually look at my trip meter to determine whether I need to fill up now or can make it to my destination, or a known gas station. Essentially I care how many km are left in the tank. Km/l would be much more intuitive. As a result the switch to thinking in terms of l/100km has not occurred for me as easily as most metric switches. I think it has even hampered my intuitive switch to thinking about distance in km as opposed to miles even though I mostly think of speed in km/hr.
  5. The only thing I object to is poaching students. Generally moving around inhibits a good and timely progression.
  6. Dirty oil for sale! Secure supply! Local aboriginal participation! Approved by a democratically elected government! Dirty oil for sale! Dirty oil for sale!
  7. There are lots of 7 cell canopies out there that you will enjoy flying. If that is what you can afford then go for it. Get your local rigger to have a look at it before you buy. Just remember that it is not a bargain, it is just a less pricey canopy.
  8. You are correct. However I have resigned myself to the sad truth that, despite my opinion to the contrary as an eighteen year old, that is in fact a possibility.
  9. We all used to have 7 cells. Then we mostly all switched to 9 cells because they fly better and land better (very high performance canopies excepted). My experience over the last 15 years or so is that there is usually a plethora of intermediate jumpers trying to dump the 7 cell they got dumped on them when they were juniors. Some people will howl with outrage as they defend the 7 cell, but the dumping of 7 cell canopies on juniors continues unabated.
  10. Actually the policy is because some of the heavy gear's warranties are based upon engine hours, nothing to do with conservation or the environment. We're too busy protecting the ducks for that shit.
  11. The boss told us at morning meeting that if we are not planning on moving the vehicle for more than 4 hours that we should shut it off. I mean, what's next?
  12. Quade: it was meant as arrows, not math... Really dude... In either case, it was bound to create the kind comments found in the first and second response. There's simply no way people were going to let it go unsaid. So SC is now the place for all threads about guns, religion, politics or China?
  13. Only eligible for a runner up prize unless they were rendered unable to reproduce.
  14. The article claims 30% of Alabamans are not born again Christians, but they didn't quote any of them.
  15. Thanks for the educated clarification Andy. I kind of thought it was obvious, but apparently not.
  16. 5% growth is likely what a "crash" would look like if it happened.
  17. Do hate speech laws apply extra-territorially?
  18. Didn't someone get banned for saying that a few years ago?
  19. My bad. Had just perused the site and did not notice it.
  20. It's a very tricky situation. While Terry Jones is an asshole and of course has no rights in UK, the argument can be made that the rights of UK citizens are affected when the voices of foreigners are silenced. Here is a story about a British MP banned from entering Canada either for having the wrong political views or being a terrorist, depending on your point of view. Those who invited him felt their rights were infringed. Here is a story referencing the Federal judge's opinion on the matter.
  21. Yes, good for Minister Moore. Very bad for the institution. The cancellation shows how the bureaucracy has fallen into this "avoid violence or threats of violence at all costs" mindset.
