  1. I think a closer inspection will show that the airspace is marked "Advisory" rather than "Restricted."
  2. Maybe it's just because there is no "Non-Professional" Skydiving Industry Employees Forum. I do most of the weekday packing during peak season and all of it during the curb season. On weekends anyone approved can pack. This generally means one guy. Keith went with us to a boogie in Kamloops this spring and was showing a marked reluctance to pack the tandem gear. Why? because he could pack two sport rigs in the same time while exerting less effort. Tandem rigs are heavy. They require more effort every step in the process. When you stop doing what you are doing and help out by packing a rig it may not be that obvious, but pack tandems continuously for a day and it becomes more clear. If it is still not clear to you, cut your rate to $5.00 and watch the unpacked nylon pile up on the floor. Compare packing a brand new set400 in a brand new Strong container to packing an 800 jump Stilletto 120 in a ten year old Vector II built for a 135.
  3. What will get you into a good drogue throwing position? 1. Getting the student to arch, no question. 2. Having a good exit. This is why I turn head up out of the king Air despite the fact that it means turning my back on the camera. 3. Outflying your student. I have never had a big problem with a student who had less surface area than me, nor do I have problems with big heavy folks. Trying to force people into position has always been the precursor to stability problems in my experience.
  4. Are you suggesting that there has been a student who preferred to learn from your fat bumbling ass than me? I find that hard to believe.
  5. There was one fatality at the Baldwin location two years ago. The enquiry came up with no answers as to why the double malfunction happened. As far as any other incidents, I have not heard of them and am positive there were no other fatalities.
  6. If you're in the Vancouver area Pitt Meadows is the closest DZ to the city. It is about 45 minutes from downtown in the northeastern suburbs. Since the aircraft are provided by the same company as Niagra's, and the DZ is owned by Tim's partner Ian, you will find the procedures and coaching progression more or less seamless with Skydive Niagra. We have a C-182, C-205 and a King Air.
  7. This is a new term to me - how would you go about doing it, and what would the lesson be? Because most of us have a very clear idea where the stall point is along our toggle stroke, and because we have arrived at this impression by achieving a stall at normal g loadings, we are in danger of dynamically stalling our canopy when we are confronted with the corner and are 'stabbing' our way out of it.

  11. Remember to stress that almost landing in the safe bit really sucks. Not recognizing that they are not going to make the field and thus foregoing the perfectly good field next door in favour of the blackberries (or worse) is a particular habit of the 25-100 jump crowd.
  12. I leave the radio in the bowl. Which ever instructor lands closest to it picks it up. On one on ones the increased chance that I won't get to it (still pretty small) is offset by their increased canopy experience. Our students do not do first jump PFF, but have at least one solo IAD jump first. On these jumps I insist on having an instructor stationed in the DZ.
  13. I log 35 seconds for a Cessna (10 000) jump and 50 seconds for a King Air jump (12 500). Can't say I've ever timed the video. I do know that riggerrob falls a lot faster with the fat guy than I do with his cute wife.

  15. I am not sure that is true. What more likely dooms it is the fact that it is being forwarded by a Conservative member of a legislature dominated by a Liberal government. Private Members' Bills almost never make it into law in Canada; especially Opposition Private Members.
  16. I IAD'd a few students from a BEECH-18 a few years ago. We used a C206 type of sitting/dynamic exit and, aside from the wrong side of plane exit, the big challenge was to keep them from being blown back into the rather narrow door in the big prop blast. What I did was grab their main lift web with my right (non pilot chute) hand. Once I felt the student commit to leaving I pushed hard, helping them clear the door. This worked quite well but did have the potential to rotate the student outward until I got the hang of it. This rotation was not a great hazard as the path from my left hand (the pilot chute) to the pin was not obscured, but it didn't teach well. I am not sure whether a static line would allow a large enough rotation to become a hazard to deployment. The problem was solved rather quickly by anticipating the backwards moving centre of gravity of the student during the exit. You might want to try a practice load if the owner will.

  18. Well . . . fuck. Kelly Well I was a bit depressed about this, but if you're going to be there with me that's not so bad. Maybe you could come up to Vancouver in the winter for a test run. It's pretty similar. We can go hunting for mean dogs.

  20. Have to disagree with you there. I have been in one four thousand foot side spin and a couple of "here it comes" situations where I rolled over and got out of it before it got wound up. When I watch Bill Morrisey's side spin video and commentary, and think back on the jumps, I have to conclude that they were all caused by trying to force the tandem into position rather than just getting big and finessing our body position when the student misbehaved. I was not reaching for the drougue on any of them. When I have been lazy and drougue happy I have on occasion rolled over toward my side. This, however, has never caused a spin. I do not believe side spins are so much connected to accidentally presenting your side so much as creating the 'side spin profile' which will find its own way into the side down attitude. BTW All three of the above mentioned students were both taller than, and lighter than me.

  23. I generally just go for a stable exit. If the student requests a flip, I will usually give them one. That policy backfired last year. A couple came to jump on Riggerrob's day off so I was going to take them on successive loads. The lady was about my height and about thirty pounds lighter than me. When she asked if we could do a loop I said sure. When she told her 250lb husband he said, "Oh, I didn't know we could do that. That'll be cool." Her loop went nicely but he didn't arch to come out of his and I spent about 1000' on my back. Video laughed his ass off at me when I landed.
