So - I have an idea how to close off the leak in the gulf.
rhaig replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
exactly. provide a good place to connect to, and ensure you're not increasing pressure with whatever you connect to it. I think the top-hat idea was much what I'm talking about, but using an open structure instead of a closed one. and yeah, I completely ignored the ice accumulation in my idea above. Thought about it didn't come up with anything good, so left it out. -- Rob -

ok.... completely brainstorming. I;d seen mentions of "huge bladders" in some leak related story (might even be this thread). speaking conceptually, with a very large volume collection space, wouldn't the methane end up at the top and the oil at the bottom? they could be both pumped off appropriately. Separation would happen naturally. construction of these huge bladders and their position and connection to the leak, is another issue all together. but to solve one part of the problem isn't a bad thing to do. I think the hardest problem to solve is going to be connecting something to where the oil is leaking. Once they can solve that problem, I'm sure they have other technologies that can do the jobs we're talking about. And even that problem has been solved, but not by ROV a mile away. -- Rob -

At least I have the want to try to fix it. Unlike those that are just posting dribble and expect someone else to do it all for them. Someone else does have to do it for us. Someone else has to do it for you, too - no matter how many DIY 'solutions' you want to post here. None of us posting here has the expertise or resources to head off into the Gulf and plug the leak. no, but a completely unworkable and asinine solution we might come up with here, could give an engineer an idea that is workable. it's called brainstorming. Evidently it won't make any difference - because ideas don't actually mean anything anymore. - just see the post above yours, Just give up - don't try - lay down and roll over and submit. The New Liberal Mantra Ok Mr Hero - who have you told about your idea? OK Mr smartypants, read post 9 in this thread. -- Rob -

all of your sarcasm aside, this is where the solution lies. Punishment for employers of illegal immigrants. -- Rob

I know the personal safety situation is different there, but securing your home from an intruder is all about degrees. Why worry about picking the lock, when there's a small window next to the front door? It's extremely expensive to make a home intruder-proof. So it's all about degrees of safety. Tradeoffs between cost and security. Lock picks don't bother me. Anyone subtle enough to use lock picks will likely go to the back door, and ensure nobody is home. They can have my stuff. That doesn't bother me as much. -- Rob

Study shows Liberals have different view of basic economics
rhaig replied to loumeinhart's topic in Speakers Corner
the sample size was appropriate. (4835 respondants) Some of the questions published seemed to me to be pretty objective. (things like restrictions on production of goods would tend to increase the prices of those goods -- it's simple supply & demand, reduce the supply, and the price goes up.) Others were not. Throwing out half the questions before publishing the results is unacceptable. Whatever the motivation and results of the culling, it looks like they picked the 8 questions that gave the results they wanted. Once again, numbers can be misleading without exposing the underlying questions, sample size, and analysis involved. This is why I tend to completely disregard these type of published numbers. (when published by someone who has ANYTHING to gain from the results they publish) -- Rob -
so you agree that gun registries are all about confiscation then. -- Rob

we need a sarcasm flag. Clearly you're being sarcastic, but with no sarcasm flag or a smiley, it's hard to tell. -- Rob -

is that relative or absolute pressure? The absolute pressure at 5000 feet is about 152.5atm which is slightly over 2200 psi. well, if the internal pressure is 2220psi, and the external pressure is 2200psi, it should be fine, but again, I don't know what the pressure being generated by the well is. And the list time I dived, the Al tanks were filled to 3000psi, I seem to recall some going to 3500, but it was a long time ago. There were some old steel tanks that would only take 2250. -- Rob -
Meh... It did though lead me to the Stanhope version of the joke which was incredibly funny. -- Rob

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_pen_is_mightier_than_the_sword The Author died 18 January 1873. You quoted a dead man. -- Rob

you DO realize that's what you've been doing with "The pen is mightier than the sword"... don't you?? -- Rob

What does literacy and gun rights have to do with each other? The opposite - yeah, there is a relationship. "The pen is mightier than the sword" is that the only thing you can find on quotefinder? -- Rob

true, but then why would you suggest cameras be tacked onto the 2nd amendment? nice dodge by the way. you contradicted yourself. you got caught in it. -- Rob
-
yes yes... let's not re-hash jr-high... I was pointing out that you might want to re-think your 2nd amendment suggestion as then it would (by your thinking) limit 1st as well I know what you were trying to do I'm simply pointing out that in one thread you made note that you disagree with individual right to bear arms and that only state militias should have them. Yet in this thread you seem to think that cameras should be added to the 2nd amendment thus assuring that everyone could still carry and use one. You contradict yourself. Or seem to. you can dodge the explanation if you like. I don't ever expect one when I catch someone contradicting themselves. Take your time. Make up a good one. Or dont. -- Rob

Can you back that up, or just use the strikeout feature? Because you have not been able to back a single thing you have said so far. No. I will leave that as an exercise for our readers ah... the classic "no, you should think about it" argument. what, you're 13? -- Rob
-
The 2nd Amendment - frustrating liberals misinterpreted and abused by gun nuts since 1787 so you disagree with SCOTUS's ruling? That the 2nd DOES indicate an individual's right to keep and bear arms. -- Rob

This surprises you? That is his MO. That is how he rolls. Still struggling with intellectual honesty, I see. Still struggling to answer the question, I see. From the forum rules, post #1, thread#1, this forum: When discussing in this (or any) forum, a good rule of thumb is the one we learned in 2nd grade soccer--play the ball, not the player. If you find yourself directing things at a person rather than at what they say, chances are you are out of line. what I find interesting is that it's become common place to use the term "intellectual dishonesty" on this page rather than calling someone a liar. Don't act like it wasn't meant that way. Someone might consider it intellectual dishonesty. What I've noticed recently is that things here seem to get nastier when people try to skirt the PA rules. On other forums I follow, there's a good healthy "fuck you" ... "no fuck you", and things don't get drawn out into such heated discussions. -- Rob
