Should Corporations & Unions Be Allowed to "Influence" (Buy) Elections?
rhaig replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
I didn't see where he mentioned limiting speech by people or entities. To put it simply, I don't believe corporations are the political equivalent of a person, and are not guaranteed the same constitutional rights as people. That said, I agree that we shouldn't limit their speech, or prevent them from running ads of a political nature. It's up to the business, the board, and stockholders what they do. Not government's business. But I'm not saying the bill of rights applies to corps. Corporations are legal entities formed on paper. Not people. They may be formed by "the people" but they are not people. Should there be an amendment granting the same rights to corporations, then I might change my mind regarding the protection of corp rights. -- Rob -
in our area there are home school co-ops popping up to handle just that. parents that can teach certain subjects do. periodically they bring in an expert on something or another. They get around the "being a shool" bits of the law by being a co-op. Every parent has to teach or assist. -- Rob

I don't think so... Marriage is a covenant between two people, God, and their community, and a change in legal status shouldn't affect that at all. Current marriages would be recognized as valid civil unions. All it would require is a simple grandfather clause. The church ceremony no longer bestows legal rights, your trip to the courthouse to get your civil union license does that. or (as now) the minister would license himself to perform those unions and kill 2 birds with one stone. -- Rob

nope.... as a former USENET admin, I'm an expert in godwin's law. There was no mention of Nazis or Hitler until just now, and that doesn't count as it wasn't a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler. -- Rob

GSUSA has always been over protective on outdoor activities, and as of late is removing outdoor activities from many of it's requirements. As a result, many units have zero outdoor activities on there activities schedule. My daughter (6) is in daisies, and keeps asking about camping. Her leader said "maybe you can do that when you get older". I did some looking and found (so far) 2 (of 12 investigated) units (I forget what they're called for 11-13yo girls) that go camping more than twice a year. (by camping I mean in tents, not cabins) My daughter now wants to join boy scouts when she turns 14 (venture scouts are co-ed) and I told her I'll try to make sure she knows as much or more than any boy in the crew. -- Rob

I am happy that in 40 years I have never been in a situation where I wished for a gun. I plan to at least make it another 40 years without that happening. I currently own several, but have never been required to fire them in self-defense. I could not imagine living without the ability to defend myself should my plans fail. -- Rob

Those like you who don't learn the lessons of history will make bad decisions. so you don't think something like that is up to parents to handle? The government should tell me how to raise my kids? -- Rob

What type of handgun do you have for "home defense"

I have a friend who's been through several classes there. Highly recommended. They come to visit the krtraining folks once in a while I mentioned earlier. -- Rob -
governments are good at providing infrastructure, order and standards. I think that private companies do a more efficient job of providing services. Drawing the line between services and infrastructure is the dicey part. Is a city bus line services, or infrastructure? Well considering they're usually contracted out anyway and run by private industry, that part doesn't matter. Utilities? I pay corporate entities for all my utilities. don't know about you. USPS? I use a contract office, not owned by USPS. My mail carrier is a contractor not hired by USPS. And private mail services seem to do a better job of delivering packages anyway. The question is should the government be in the business of providing a service to us? so let's drift this thread. what service does the US Govt provide that isn't provided equally or better by a private company. The discussion between the difference of a service and infrastructure is expected. -- Rob

I was referring to the increase in the size of americorps, and hitler's brownshirts. Note that I don't think Obama is hitler. or anywhere near. but my reply was to someone who said that nothing they did was similar. (though both hitler and obama asked citizens to report when people they know are passing around information they believe not to be true) I agree that correlation does not equal causation, I was just cherry picking an example to disprove a broad generalization. (I was being an asshole. I'm good at that) -- Rob

the extreme sports park and water park have been put on hold north of austin. (between round rock and cedar park) Not cancelled, put on hold. I live 5min from the proposed site. Know people on community boards. That's how I hear these things. the assertion earlier in the thread was that the waterpark and extreme sports park were the same site as the proposed wind tunnel. -- Rob

The one you enjoy shooting and will actually spend considerable time practicing with. With out that, all the debate about caliber and load is moot. Its just a bunch of dick measuring if you don't actually go shoot and get good at operating the weapon. Same with a flashlight. If you don't have a light on your weapon or next to your weapon, you're now a danger to yourself and every single person in your household. Not only do you need to be able to identify what your are pointing your gun at, the light does disorientate people. You have to practice with your light. You have to make sure it doesn't effect your weapon. For instance some lights can make your Glock malfunction if you have it too tight on the frame. It changes the weight of your gun and it adds another step to the presentation of the weapon (turning on the momentary switch or the on switch). The biggest thing to do is to practice and practice a LOT. Not with your favorite big gun, but your every day carry gun. "It hurts and sucks to shoot." Then its time to buy a different carry gun. One that you'll actually shoot and practice with. Be sure to practice in the dark, since if its a home defense gun, that's what you'll be in. All that plus if you have the time and money, try to find some tactical handgunning courses near you. Around here, I refer people to http://krtraining.com -- Rob -
Just to support thread drift... That's an interesting question. I think the answer depends on the ultimate goal. If the goal is to secure the border from possible terrorist crossings, then the answer is a wall with sensors, jeeps and choppers on patrol with tons of video. If the answer is "there's too many brown people" then the answer is make sure it's fucking illegal to hire them and enforce the hell out of it. Fewer jobs == less opportunity == less immigration. I think the latter is the wrong reason, and the former is an unrealistic solution. But I don't know any other. -- Rob

well, both Hitler and Obama created or greatly enlarged volunteer service corps. These volunteers are (and were) trained by the government agency they work with how to interact with others to represent their organization (one could say indoctrinated, but that word has negative connotations). So there is at least one similarity between the actions of the two men. -- Rob

I try to keep my diet 20-25% calories from fat, and the rest equally balanced between carbs and protein. That means for my 1800cal/day diet, I need at most 180g of protein a day. (4cal per gram approximately). that's about 0.4lb of meat per day. I don't know that I'd call that "meat heavy". -- Rob

Since when did the Police go from protecting and serving the citizens to acting like the Borg ... resistance is futile. I haven't seen a force do more than react to crime in a long while. Our neighborhood hires an off-duty officer with a take-home car to patrol and park at th entrance for a few hours a day. But if he wasnt on the HOA payroll, we wouldn't have that much even. I don't know if they teach protect and serve in academies anymore, but it's not externally visible. -- Rob
