I always thought it was rather obvious...After all, he is 'Head' Master BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

I met and jumped with Rich back in 1975 at a small DZ in Lower Alabama. It was very odd that a cousin of his was one of my close neighbors, and childhood playmates. What an awesome guy! I'll see you again if I make the list. Jay Smith "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything" -
No big deal Hoop...If it weren't for events like that, I wouldn't have any good stories to tell when I get old(er) Not being sure if I was parked in Frenchy's kitchen or not, I've added a red arrow to HW's ZH's pic in the spot where Sally and I parked that night...with all the accuracy that 27 years will allow. Thanks again for your hospitality, your part in skydiving history, as well as holding some awesome skydiving events! Seeing the roof of that shed reminds me of my 'close encounter' with Hoop when he was DZO at The Hills. It was the Turkey Meet of 79 or 80 (John Cutts had his Tiger Striped DC3 there) and my new wife and I drove down for the occasion. Since she had recently bought a new mini Japanese pick up truck, we decided to take it, and camp in the bed. Shortly after arriving at the airport it began to rain, so to stay dry we backed the rear of the truck under that shed. After the drive from Alabama, combined with any liquor or substances floating around, it was no surprise that the sun had been up for a while before I opened my eyes. However, I didn't get to sleep too much longer before one of Hoop's staff approached and said "Dude, what the hell are you doing parked under here?" After explaining that it had been raining when I parked there last night, he seemed OK with it, but added..."Well, I quess that's OK, but if you're still here when Hoop shows up, he's gonna ream your ass good!" Needless to say, we quickly took a more traditional parking spot and continued on to have a great time. I guess it took me being a DZO myself about 20 years later to understand what it takes to hold that position, but I'm still glad not to have been busted by Hoop that morning! 90% of my CReW experience was in the late 70s, bare footed and usually drunk. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything" -
Now, there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Back then, Tom and I were both on USAF B-52 crews from different bases. We were both at Carswell AFB on the way to SE Asia, and he saw the Starcrest patch that I wore on my flight jacket. I met a few AF jumpers that way. Anybody know if Tom is still around ?? Kevin K. If it was Julian 'Tom' Manship you're referring to, I regret to inform you he was killed on a B.A.S.E. jump on New years Eve 2005, in North Carolina. PM for more info. No dig on you, Z Man, but I don't believe that to be true. First parachute decent from an aircraft? Yes, but not first decent...that had been going on for some time with the Chinese, long before. Yes, B.A.S.E. jumping began before Skydiving! BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

Radio instruction - can you tell them to cut away?

If I feel a student needs my input in this situation, that is my preferred instruction. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything" -
What's an "OSI"? A slider? I notice two pilot chutes. And risers about 5 feet long! An OSI is an Opening Shock Inhibitor. I used to jump a Delta II that was so fucked up, it took 3 MA1's to drag it out and deploy. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

I remember a crazy nurse from Ft Hood, named Laura Hood who was jumping around that time. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

In late 1991 when I retired the 'first' time, I took two months to fly my highly modified and polished 1954 Cessna 170B all over the US. On my way back down the west coast in December, I decided to land at San Francisco International (KSFO). After approach control asking several times what I was flying, and was I sure I wanted to land there, I was cleared to land on runway 28L. I was asked by the tower to keep my speed up on final, so I decended with power at around 140mph, which had me nearly flying formation with a Boeing 737 landing on 28R. The looks on the pax faces was priceless! I only used the last 500 feet of the runway, and was guided to GA parking by ground control, where I paid a $28 landing fee. Good for you. Better that, than ending up with a signature line like mine... "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

I still have most of those old Skydive Mobile tee shirts, and came across "I survived 1992 at Skydive Mobile" just the other day in storage. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

Altthough it was loosely based on the Cessna 170, and shared many parts, the military version O1, was known as a Cessna 305 in civilian circles. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

The Helio Stallion in HW's second pic (N5779N) was Mike Mullins. It was totalled in a crash in Mobile, AL on 29SEPT1990. I missed the load by 15 minutes. Since I was in the towing business and had enough equipment to recover the Stallion to a secure location, Mike gave me the OK to cut the wings off with a metal saw. That broke my heart, but the thing was in a helluva shape already. From crashed to stashed was about 4 hours. I think I still have a piece of the torn wing spar in my storage someplace. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=wickety+whack Yeah, I checked there before posting. As you can see, 'wickety whack' has yet to be defined there. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

Thanks! That's the input I was looking for. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"

I'm sure 'straight up whack' is just clearly defined 'whack'. Just not sure about 'wickety' whack. BASE359 "Now I've settled down, in a quiet little town, and forgot about everything"
