  1. If you can find a used stilletto 170 for a good price, it is hard to beat. Heatwave is good too, don't spend a lot of money on a big crossfire, they seem dog slow at low wing loadings (they fly big), you can buy one one day when you downsize to a more readical loading. a stilleto 170 has very consistent openings and still quite fast for a canopy that big. I jump something much smaller, but I look back with fondness on the 40 jumps I put on a stilleto 170. ramon
  2. I saw several people busting there butt yesterday...It was bumpy

    Swoop!

I hate telling people what to do , but it is better than not telling them. If you want to experience a little extra speed safely. When you are on final ('100-150' up)...keeping your toggles in your hands grab both your front riser and tug down on them 2-3 inches. at about 15-20 feet (higher if the speed is disconcerting) slowly let them up and get ready to flare normally. With the extra speed you should surf a little bit, if you are used to flaring very hard, the extra speed may pop you up in the air a little due to the lift. Be safe, cutie. ramon

    Swoop!

Read the following http://www.skydiveaz.com/resources/book_canopy.htm http://www.afn.org/skydive/sta/flynland.html Worst mistakes 1. I have to swoop. 2. I'm really going to hook it this time. Best habits 1. plan your swoop on the ground with several outs, and use your outs rather than stay in the swoop if something is in your way. 2. If anything looks different in the air from your plan, get into the pattern and land normally. 3. Practice far away from the congested 'close' landing area to lessen unexpected obstacles (unseen canopy, child, dog, car plane, relatives with camera's, RW 10 ways high fiving each other in the middle of the landing area
  5. John Matthews, Colon Berry and Rob Romey (Z-tribe) used to wear full face helmets. It may be that they wore a different brand (Renegade?) that may be tighter. I do know that later in their careers they jumped full faces with now lenses and wore goggles underneath. bloo ones ramon
  6. Very forgiving, stable fun canopy. bloo ones ramon
  7. Just stirring it up. My friend Conway is demo-jumping the pre-competition model (I think it is a 95). It is slamming the crap out of him (he does RW only). I told him to use small rubber bands and leave 3-4 inches per stow with 18 inches left over, but still slamming him. this is not a freefly friendly parachute, but the Atair reps swore it was not a hop-n pop chute designed only for competition.. My friend Levin demoed a normal 75 and loved the openings. bloo skies ramon
  8. It is hard to get a demo in reasonable time if you work odd hours. My friend Wane can't ever get a canopy.
  9. No Offence to the Yankee skydivers but I always forget how nice Southerners are till I go up North. Skydive Chicago was great and the people basically nice, but the morons working in and around Ottawa restaurants and hotels.......ha ha ha ha. rude and stupid. The difference in service at a fast food joint in Illinois and Arkansas was amazing. at least service industry southerners are polite and caring. bloo skies ramon
  10. There was a short article in Skydiving Magazine. Basically the XAOS 21 appears to be an FX clone (I guess we can assume that the 27 will be a VX clone), however George Galloway says he has made improvements in the nose and crossbracing. They are also experimenting with new line material an aramid fiber and continuous lines (better canopy shape and more drag, but thinner lines would be less drag and so may balance out). He says the demos being jumped have 1000 jumps on the same lines. Shaylan Allman did win the distance event at Perris on a Xaos21 but we all know consistency and luck really come in to play at one of those events (unless you're Jim Slaton and place in every event every time..ha ha ha) bloo skies ramon

    Ninja Canopy

Quick look there is one right behind you. I thought Brian Germain was making one called the ninja also. He told me he was so busy he did not have time to work on that project much. ??? Actually I checked the website..not much info is there.

Con The drive sucked from Houston. I lost my main (6th jump)although we flew the Cessna looking for it. I failed the atmospheric Dolphin test (really...so what, now I really have a good idea about my skills) Pro Oh yeah I forgot, I saved my own life that was my first save for a reserve pack job. Every dealer helped keep me jumping with demo gear (John Leblanc is cool). Did several tube jumps with my friends. Made a jump with one of the DZ.com-ers. Did 4 coach jumps with Mike Swanson Did a jump with Steve O Did a jump with Dusty Did a jump with Brad Chatelier Saw some old buddies. Did a 5 point 3 way freefly with my friend Levin and Mike Ortiz (Flyboyz). Olav gave me a School Patch. Ate good food, drank a lot of beer. Had a great time ramon
  14. You just sit tight waiting for that knock..... They always knock first. wait I mean oink first, but you have to listen carefully..
  15. Come to think of it, Every opportunity for costume at Spaceland (Carbone's latest haunt) he has been in drag. skydiver's mardi gras is getting cancelled by the pigs. sheesh ramon
  16. I had some little poor englsh speaking miscreant pack old faithful for me at Chicago. What is funny, before I jumped it I told everyone not to use the little bastard, my bridle was exposed, twisted and my risers were poorly tucked. 0. jump with Mike Swanson, world Cham. 1. pull 3500 2. snivel open 2700 look up line twists 7 " long and getting longer 3. 2500 spinning bad and getting worse, dytter flat lining.. 4. chop. 5. main and free bag lost in corn field with crops 8 ' high. 30 people knew exactly where it went, but .....you know how that goes after looking for it for 5 hours and making fly overs in the cessna. Cest la vie.
  17. Chopped my main at Chicago so I was jumping demo gear. I am 220 out the door, I jumped a Spectre 150. I have 450 jumps (270 in past 10 months) I jumped everything down to 109 FX straight in conservativley, though I get a little radical on a 150 or 135. My thoughts....I thought I was overloading that canopy a little bit. a vengeance 135 will land softer... I felt...maybe because of the way I fly that I had to build up a little speed to land and did so softly although I was running full speed. I think I would rather a 9 cell at that wing loading. I think If I landed one straight in I would be ok, but I am not sure I would enjoy doing that all day (sore ankles, know whut ah mean). Why don't you demo one and demo a similar sized 9 cell. For me I like a 175, 9 cell (1.28-1.3) In fact after flying that canopy I declined to jump demo gear with reserves smaller than 143....period.
  18. 1. Be careful on the demo if you have never flown a high performance canopy. The samurai especially can seem very tame in the toggles, but it can dive and it requires some skill to land softly. 2. There is a big difference in flying charaecterisitics between the samurai and a jedei so keep that in mind if you like the samurai and then see a used Jedei for sale. Jedei is more radical in flying, but amazingly the samurai seems capable of diving longer and surfing further. bloo ones ramon
  19. There are probably 20 different types of Jedeis as Brian Germain kept on makig changes and improvements. The swept wing had a tapered leading edge if I remember. You can e-mail him (Brian) at zenfreefall@aol.com
  20. You know...If i thought about all the times I should have been hurt and wasn't....I guess my personal answer might have been different. 32 yrs old, 10 years in military, did lots of drugs in college, owned motorcycle 10 years, 450 jumps some swoops, swam in ocean, skateboarded, skied, all the stupid shit punk rockers did in the 80s .........never a broken bone or hospital trip (cept nose 8years old, baseball) knock on wood. ramon
  21. I'll jump with you anytime you catch me early and make me commit. (underline early and make me commit). I have a bad habit when my friends are there of constantly only jumping with them, but I do in fact try to jump with at least one newbie (pardon the expression, if you aren't on your head) every weekend. Ground coaching and dive planning is available at all times unless I am frantically putting on gear and looking for my altimeter ramon
  22. I bought a goddamn Volkswagen....new.... almost 4 years old now and about 12,000 worth of insurance (12 inch flood waters destroyed my engine) and extended warranty claims on the POS. And, my airconditioner just went out..again. Why am I paying a car note for this crap. Ok, maybe it's not the dumbest, but it is something I regret every couple of weeks.
  23. If you were like me a year go, your wuffo friends are probably also sick to death of listening about skydiving, ha ha ha. Once you really become entrenced in skydiving one day you wake up and realize that all of the people you hang around during the week are skydivers...hahahah bloo skies ramon
