Hey that would be a good name for a team the freefly death traps. I've seen lots of Javelin main flaps open in freefall. Lately I've heard of some riser flaps too. Seen a voodoo with riser flaps opne in free fall more than once. Never seen Levin's shit open though unless he was having a cutaway. Get a Mirage or a vector 3 ramon

Macromedi flash 5.0 had instructions for installing on Linux supporting GLIBC 2.0 and up. I am amazed. Oh and nice site Dan. Still waiting to see the Onyx I was out of town when Eric Butts was slumming over at Spaceland so I didn't get to inspect it if that was the onyx . I still want to see a skydiving canopy with a 3.5 aspect ratio and inflatable stabilizers...dammit

that is right, a person would be hanging from their RSL all the way down. ramon

The cordura pouch is fine and it won't wear out like spandex. Bungee on leg straps for free flying is a good option. I only have one video where anything is open on mine (riser cover) and it was open on exit not because of freeflying. ramon P.S. Make sure you keep your pop top tight and have your rigger tighten it (if you watch him/her make sure they jerk the closing loop as opposed to pulling really long and hard. Always check your reserve pin to make sure it is not kinked. a kinked reserve pin will kill you with out a cypres to cut your reserve closing loop if you have a mal.

Question about Straight in landings/wing loadings
ramon replied to Viking's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
1st (like Hook said you can land almost anything straight in.. but...a spectre or..(yuk) a falcon at 2.0 might not be as good as an FX at 2 infact I never want to land a regular 7 cell more than 1.5) At some DZ's (mine is not really an example) you can become freinds with someone, they can overestimate your abilities and offer to let you fly their jedei 135/velocity 105 whatever....as long as you turn on to final high and come straight in...... At 50 jumps I don't think you should make a radical departure. from what you fly. at 150...if you are landing well...have all your d license accuracy landings and there is good weather..... try what you have the balls to try, ...but more than 2 sizes away from you current canopy and you are taking a significant risk...traffic/funny wind/unfamiliar gear/weird spot/and finally....a known killer...the BRAIN FART. You signed the waivers..buddy..you saw the biff. I fyou try a canopy at 1.7 amd have never jumped one at 1.5...shame on ya. My best instructor always told me..."don't downsize until you are tearing up your current main trying to get every last bit of performance". -
The main problem with the sport is that a device intended to save the life of a pilot (round or large square) has transformed into another flying device. But non-pilots are flying them (disclaimer, I know of a jump pilot wuffo that strapped a on a rig with a stilletto in it and did an illegal jump and landing successfully). When they have these flying canopies on the market available to anyone, that can and will maim you with an error, (no touch and goes with a canopy only digging your brakes until accelerated stall) we have a recipe for lots of injuries. Talk to any old timer...they used to hook paracommanders (no I can't imagine what it looked like) but typical injuries were bruises, broken ankles...but they lived. We are close to having an unregulated extreme flying sport, but skydivers are very protectful of their freedom...so what do you do.. peace ramon

I am afraid I am one post away from tying my jump numbers. Can't let that happen. Therefore I must make sure to reach 601 jumps this weekend so that I have a little breathing room for next week. I have been reading too much in the wrong sections. Doh ramon

Surprisingly better than a lot of mass marketed Fantasy. I threw The Sword of Shannara in the f***ing garbage after I got off a 12 hour flight. I had to read all the Harry Potters though. ramon

couldn't finish Riverworld series started good though. Read ringworld series Asimov is fun (foundation etc), esay to see how everyone copies him in theose robot movies (I robot). You like Science fiction try some of the old old stuff (Alfred Bester books) right now I'm reading City by Clifford Simak (very old)

'I Claudius' Robert Graves 'Dune' Series Frank Herbert 'War and Peace' Tolstoy (I swear I never would have read this had I not been bored in Abu Dhabi for 2 months) 'The fountainhead' Ayn Rand (she is full of shit, but a good writer) 'Slaughterhouse 5' Kurt Vonnegut I read so much that I picked those 5

Will it be running by week of April 13ths (this is Umm Al Quan right?) I want to come jump there while I am in abu Dhabi. Ramon

Must be the issue. I'm always looking for easy answers . Maybe after I put 300-400 more jumps on my FX I'll have a better feel for a carve set up. thanks ramon

Hey D. I started doing hard hooks because the good pilots...ie. you Super and Chris were doing them. Pilots not as good as you three tell me not to do them because they are dangerous...though I am more accurate and pretty much hook at my correct altitude or take an out. The Pros talk of carving also...looks to me like they are hooking though.. Drew Lipinski even said that he is more of a hard turner than a carver... Is there anything inherently more dangerous n a hook than a carve...if you are dialed in and turn at the right height? There isn't any greater chance of canopy colapse from a rotor in either technique...right?. ramon

Lately I have been experiementing with carving instead of snap front riser turns. Everyone says it is safer etc.. I have tried very gradual carves that end up with me yanking very hard on the riser (maybe 45 snap) to complete a 180 turn to final and I have tried sort of tight hard carves. Seems like the gradual carves do not build as much speed as I would like and my accuracy is really bad and I wind up low and off heading. When ever I watch the pros who are carving they seem to be doing slightly better than a slow snap hook. Is the idea just to complete as steep a dive as you can without really snapping yourself above the canopy? I am not sure I have ever gotten the speed I can get from a hard 180. newly wet from the ditch (done with 180 snap for accuracy) Ramon

Some PISA gear (Hornet Heatwave) can be demoed from American Skydiving Systems in Biloxi MS. they advertise in Skydiving magazine and Parachutist. Also www.bigairsportz.com...Brian Germain's site can tell you how to demo a Samurai (good canopy) or Lotus (no experience with that one). Brian is very easy going and has talked to me (someone he does not know from Adam) for 15 minutes about canopies over the phone...very nice guy and neat canopies if you want something a little different. Also if you really love Jedeis...hint...he still has the patterns and will make you a brand new one if you ask nice.

It is probably because you have a good flare technique. All the parachutes I had been flying were very forgiving of poor technique (though surfs would not be as long as possible). I had been doing an exagerated...late two stage flare. This really showed itself when I first started jumping an FX...I had to re-learn how to flare. I think a Safire wants a very smooth controlled flare not stabbing...but that is my very limited experience opinion. Sabres, stilletos, vengeance...all extremely shallow brakes and forgiving. Good technique will probably make a safire land just as well. r

It was great Ann. thanks for showing me at your house since I couldn't manage the plug in at home on Linux. Hope your sunburn gets better. ramon

luv it. I could hardly land Hooks 189 Safire...stood it up..but...almost didn't

Given no other flying vehicle flies quite like a weight suspended from an inflatable wing... hmmm The Fokker DRIII...the Red Barons style plane had three wings. It had lots of lift and control surfaces for maeuvering and so could maneuver very well, but it was slow. In this case you have (theroetically only, and by no means true or exact)...three times the drag, a potential for three times the lift at a given speed and angle of attack... but you still have the same thrust....gravity. sounds big and slow, but it might turn fast (not dive so fast) If the wings were far enough apart to not steal much air from each other maybe it ould be like this...like a 120 VX with low aspect ratio. Or I could be totally guessing....QUADE??? ramon
