Hi Eric, Re: it looked changes that had been carried out by the manufacturer (in particular on reserve closing flap) which at least affected the certification of the parachute since FAA has not being notified. I am going to comment on this based upon my own personal experience. Many years ago ( about 20+ yrs ), I received a routine letter from the Seattle Aircraft Certification Office. It went out to all certificate holders ( TSO holders to most of you ) within the Seattle ACO region. It said that we had to notify their office of any changes ( i.e., Minor Changes ) within 6 months of the effective date. I telephoned the letter writer & told her that there was no FAA req'ment on time-frame for submittal of changes and that she had no authority to issue such a letter. She agreed with me but asked that I do as the letter said. I informed her that I always submitted my changes within 6 months. That was the end of that. Also, back in the '60's, Security Parachute Co. was the depository of their specifications. Specifications being all of those drawings, documents, etc, associated with a TSO. What that meant is that Security merely made changes & never notified or submitted them to the FAA. The FAA became aware of the changes during their Safety Inspection visits. IMO it is a very loosely enforced 'req'ment.' Hope this helps in understanding some of this 'Minor Change' stuff. Jerry Baumchen PS) I have been out of the parachute business for 3 1/2 yrs now, so I am not aware of any changes to the FAA regs, guidelines, etc, since then.

Hi Rob, Re: SBs carry the same weight of law as FAA issued Airworthiness Directives. I disagree. A mfr may make a SB that they have issued 'mandatory' but it is still not mandatory by the FAA. An AD is issued by the FAA and is mandatory. IMO as to how this splitting of hairs' would stand up in court is not really known. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Joe, Re: After Johnson pushed the legislation through that gave rights to 'those people', that changed. With the Civil Right Act of 1964 & the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Nixon saw his chance. In 1966 he began making speeches in the 'New South' about how we would only nominate Supreme Court judges who were in thinking with those 'new Southerners.' It worked as he got the nomination & the Presidency in 1968. * It is still working today. Jerry Baumchen * Nixon once said his favorite song was Dixie. Hi Rob, Re: This static-line operated system was a bag-deployed piggyback system, with the main mounted on top and the reserve immediately below. The XBO system came on the market in the early Spring of '64. Later, Summer/Fall of '64 there was strong rumor going around about the Soviets having tried a piggyback system in the '30's. Apparently, the Soviet design had the main container on the top & the reserve container on the bottom. The result was a number of fatalities, so they abandoned the concept. Or it may just be urban legend. Jerry Baumchen PS) When Security patented the XBO container design, they patented it for the reserve container on top of the main container, on the side of the main container & below the main container.

Post trump Legal Actions, Including his Enablers
JerryBaumchen replied to Phil1111's topic in Speakers Corner
Hi Joe, I really do not know. My folks owned a small house on a large lot in North Portland. When I looked into putting two houses on the lot, I found that, back in the mid-40's as I remember, there was some re-doing of the property lines and the result was that I could not put two houses on the lot AND I could not appeal that decision. After the fire, I just made a deal with a developer who cleared the carcass & built a larger, single house on the property. C'est la vie, Jerry Baumchen -

Hi Joe, Re: Just hoping to rezone SFR land to High Density Commercial goes nowhere. As you probably know, if you are in Portland, OR and you want to rezone that SFR land to High Density Residential, the city will be your friend. 'Parking problems; I do not see any parking problems.' Hi 13, Re: the faa is pretty clear in definitions OK, that got the hairs on the back of my neck excited. Having deal somewhat extensively with the FAA since 1965, as both a rigger with numerous field approvals and as a mfr with multiple TSO's, in my personal experience, the one thing the FAA is really good at is NOT being clear on definitions. IMO they do their very best to not put anything in writing. Once it is in writing it is open to challenge & comment. IMO the FAA does not want that. Now, down off of my soapbox. Jerry Baumchen PS) The last discussions that I had with the FAA, I asked them to put what they were demanding in writing & I would respond. They said that they would. Later that day, I had a voice message from them that they would not be putting anything in writing but I had to do what they said. I never did. Outside of the ATC guys, I have no respect for the employees of the FAA; with two exceptions in 55 yrs.

Hi Ken, Re: although I don't see why it's not Gerry. For the most part Gerry or Gerri, is a nickname for a woman; i.e., someone who's birth name would Geraldine. When you are a Gerald => Jerry, you tend to notice those things. Jerry Baumchen PS) Over the years I have noticed quite a few people named Jerome who also go by Jerry. It is what it is. PPS) I once asked J. Scott Hamilton if he preferred to be called Scott, Scotty or Hey you. He replied, 'Yup.'

Hi Joe, Great post; I could not have put it better. Re: My legal name is "Joseph", I generally go by Joe. Either is fine. I don't like the nickname "Joey" and those who use that are so informed. I am legally Gerald; a name that I truly despise. I am 'almost' always called Jerry; my preferred name. I do not like to be called Jer; I really despise that one. All of you are warned. 'Jerry' Baumchen PS) I do my very best to call someone just what they prefer to be called. I would consider that just being respectful. PPS) I named both of my children ( with my then wife's approval ) with names that are very difficult to turn into nicknames. Their names are short, simple & very distinct.
