Hi Joe, Here is something an old rigger taught me back in the mid-60's. His name was Eddie Brown and if you were a rigger on the west coast back then, you knew who he was. He taught me how to calculate the strength of a stitch pattern. Let's take a typical 3" long, 4-point stitch pattern. A 4-pint stitch pattern is 8 legs of stitching. This is easily seen on the harness ring attachment on a Vector, Infinity, etc. 1. The thread has a strength of 45 lbs. 2. You should assume 5-6 stitches per inch; let's use 5.5 3. You should discount your calculations by 15% due to thread damage as it passes thru various places on the sewing machine & thru the needle; the needle does the most damage to the thread. Therefore, a typical 3" long, 4-point stitch pattern gives us: 45 lbs x 3" long x 5.5 SPI x 8 legs of stitching = 5940 lbs / 1.15 (our 15% reduction) => 5165 lbs total. Just a little historical info for you. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Stumpy, Re: the biggest thing as a child that brought me to the conclusion that it was all bs. For me, it was about 1956. I was 16 & my brother was 15. For some unknown reason, our mother decided we should attend Bible Study. This was at a church that my family attended maybe twice a year. What triggered the idea of attendance at two random times of the year, I have no idea. Anyway, during these studies, the pastor was telling us about how if one accepts Jesus Christ they will go to Heaven. I got into a discussion with him about this. We went back & forth. He told me that a person can live any type of life that they might want; good, bad, evil, does not matter. If they accepted Jesus Christ on their deathbed, they would get into Heaven. At that time, I thought that was about the nuttiest thing I had ever heard. I've been a heathen ever since. Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, I've known Joe for over 30 yrs. I can say that I have never seen him in a cowboy hat or wearing cowboy boots. And, I don't think he has a gun rack in the back window of that F-150. Jerry Baumchen -

Hi Lee, Re: I thought I was a radical when I ran a horizontal below the leg junction on a harness. It has been a number of years ago, but I read & saw photo where Sunpath did this for one of their Jav rigs that they built for a VERY short member of the Golden Knights. I don't have the photo, or I would post it. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Rob, Re: 90 degrees is not the perfect angle for upper leg straps (ULS) to meet the main lift web (MLW) and lower leg strap (LLS). I agree. Here is a photo from Paraphernalia's/Softie website: IMO this is a nicely splayed webbing at the hip joint. I'm not sure why Quag wants to do it like this; I'm sure he has his reasons: Jerry Baumchen

Hi folks, I own two 2015 vehicles, both gas-powered, from a mfr with a great reputation for reliability, that I think will be the last cars that I will ever own. However, I do see the proliferation of EV's to continue & expand. What's in the White House plan to expand electric car charging network : NPR From the article: A big barrier to buying an electric vehicle . . . is figuring out where and how to charge it. I've been thinking about this charging network problem. * I think the answer might be to just use existing gas stations & convert one bay to EV's only. The real estate is already there; only a larger electrical feed would be req'd to convert them. Yes, of course, some changes to the existing gas fuel islands. So, what do you think the answer is? Jerry Baumchen * Somewhat driven by a family member who is planning on buying an EV later this year.

Hi Robert, Re: Ban ‘idiot’ anti-vaxxers from flying I've concluded that this is probably the best approach. The federal gov't doesn't seem to have the firepower or incentive to force them to get vax'd. Use the marketplace and let the chips fall where they may. If we cannot get them to vax, then let's keep them away from the rest of us. The 'ban from flying' is a form of isolation. Jerry Baumchen

Hi Quag, I can tell you what Rob is talking about. 1. Cut a piece of T-8 at 6" ( 150 mm ) long 2. Turn both ends under 1" ( 25 mm ) - you now have a piece 4" ( 100 mm ) long 3. Place over your hip junction on the underside of the MLW but centered on the hip junction so that an equal amount of the T-8 is above & below the hip junction 4. Now sew it with a 4-point stitch pattern for the entire 4" ( 100 mm ) both above & below the actual hip junction - you now have stitching both above & below the hip junction that only connects this piece of T-8 to the MLW What John Sherman found was that by doing this, some of the load at the actual hip junction would then be supported by this longer piece of T-8 where it is sewn to the MLW. This allows the T-8 that is above & below the hip junction to carry some of the load; thereby reducing the load that the stitching at the hip junction has to carry. Do you understand this? If not, get back to us. Jerry Baumchen PS) When I saw my first SST back in the early 70's I could understand why this extra piece of T-8 was there. Now, I know. Here what I worked up. The black outlines the piece of T-8 & the red is the stitch pattern.

Hi Quag, Re: What about rotating the webbing so it doesn't meet at right angles? It is almost impossible to form this joint so that all the stitches load equally. People are simply too different in stature. A ring does allow all of the stitching to be loaded equally. 'All of the stitching' means the stitching in each portion of the hip joint, not all stitch patterns. Al MacDonald of Flying High in Canada, a number of years ago, did some comparative testing of hip joints with & without rings. The ringed hip joint was substantially stronger. Jerry Baumchen PS) If it were me, and not using a ring, I would rotate the stitching 90*, so that the stitch pattern is in line with the horizontal back strap. PPS) Shoot me an email & we can discuss this more; and in more detail.

Hi airdvr, Re: I've always felt education is how you at least start to solve it. I'm talking about K-12. IMO anyone, here in the USA, who thinks that just a high school education will take care of your financial future, should ponder the thought a little more. Unless, of course, that you are fortunate to possess the skills of Michael Jordan or Tom Brady. Re: I've always felt education is how you at least start to solve it. I could not agree more. This why I support free tuition at Community Colleges; just keep the GPA up. Jerry Baumchen
