Fantastic. We take a quarter million years learning how to come down from the trees, dodge Saber Tooth Tigers, figure out how to curse and build things (which are inseparable), develop rocket fuel and fly off to the moon so, viola, we can move back into caves. No wonder that crazy spelunker guy was willing to go with only a one way ticket.

That's been the conventional wisdom for too long, I'm thinking. These day's I don't buy it that people need to send people to support the space program. In fact, if we didn't send people, the few people who need us to send people would become as blissfully unaware that we even have a space program as the rest of the people. We should just give it to the marketing department for rebranding and then stop talking about it. Sure people are better at problem solving than rocks. But I'm thinking that if all of the problems that are due to life support are eliminated things become all that much easier and vastly cheaper. For example, those pesky people problems like the Space Station crapper going on the fritz and the heroes needing to come home wearing diapers. Now that's some high tech problem solving, right?

I don't know, but it seems to me that whatever insight a human might offer would be seriously overwhelmed by the information obtained by other less expensive means. Mostly, we don't need new knowledge to build probes etc. We already know that if the budget is there we'll figure it out as we always have. Maybe in the next century we'll know how to send humans into space for some useful purpose. I just don't think it makes sense now.

Scowl is my guess. We don't need anymore American Hero's since the insurrection so screw the manned space program. Time to put money into probes, landers and deep space telescopes, I think.

I agree completely. We've proven beyond any doubt that using even vastly better than existing technology we won't be going anywhere soon and certainly not fast. When I suggest faking it I'm being serious. We should focus on exploring our environs virtually. Well, at least until Zuckerberg tell us where he's from and how he got here.

I flipped and rolled a '53 Chevy coming down a mountain, no seat belt of course. Talk about getting your cage rattled. Even though I have valuable personal experience, and a swell anecdote I trust the science and wear one now. Of course, if I read any studies out of Delhi showing that ejection is the way to go for 97% of all participants, I'll surely reconsider.

Not really. Bats have few natural predators. Hence, nature provides diseases like white nose syndrome to control populations. Maybe more wind turbines equals less disease over time. In any case each wind turbine is killing +/- 10 bats per year. Science should be able to sort that out long before we run out of tree bats.
