Andy's dead on with this one. I used to work for Seagate so let me expand a bit on this. Disk drives, specifically the read/write heads, work because when the platter spins, it creates a cushion of air above it. It's known as an "air-bearing surface". The heads float on this cushion, literally tenths of a millimeter above the surface. Now, this is some nicely thick air, so if you were to move the drive, or only submit it to a few G's (30-60G's for most desktop drives, up to 100G's for laptop/portable drives) the head is cushioned and shouldn't slap the media. If it does slap, the head will score a groove in the substrate of the media faster than you can blink, and the head will be destroyed. Anything above 10K feet MSL is really pushing it for drives and you really should have the drive in a specially pressurized chamber. The higher the density (capacity), the more fragile it's gonna be. And before anyone says that 100G's is a lot, you can generate 200G's by simply slapping your hand upon a table-top. It's duration that matters it doesn't take much to muck up a drive. CYPRES 1 Batteries (Was: cypres 2 maintainence price announced at PIA)
Kris replied to tdog's topic in Gear and Rigging
It's a fuseable link. If you try to install the battery plug backwards it will blow to protect the Cypres. If you blow the link, you have to get another set of batteries. My rigger explained that one to me after he had one of his less-than-bright customers try to change his own Cypres battery, and fail. Real quick-does anybody know Ralph Hatley's website?
Kris replied to windcatcher's topic in The Bonfire
I have to add my story as well... I had ordered my reserve and custom Heatwave main through Ralph a few years ago. The Heatwave started getting a gradual built-in turn that, by jump 30-ish on it, had to be countered with several inches of opposite toggle. I contacted Ralph to see what he could do for me and he offered me full credit for what I paid on the main towards another canopy if I didn't want to wait for mine to be fixed. I paid the difference and picked up my Stiletto for a really great price. IIRC, he didn't even charge me shipping and it was on its way before I had sent the old canopy back. Now that's customer service! -

I would post a really lengthy reply about how cool this news is, if I didn't have to spend a year dead, for tax reasons. Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

I think we could do the wedding, too. After all, nothing says romance like vows in a balloon. -

Yanno...I never gave that stuff much thought when I saw it in the store, but put a couple of drops inside a condom and it's a night and day difference. Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

I've done just that on a number of laptops over the past 10 years. Maybe things have changed, or maybe it's different on the consumer side, but on the business class IBM, HP, and Compaq laptops we have at work, simply yanking the battery won't do it, and they don't have CMOS clearing jumpers. If a user can't remember their password, a tech has to be dispatched to either unlock it or swap the board. Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Yup...and Firefox is just about the best thing since sliced bread. Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

You can't do that on most laptops. You either have to hope they use a master password that a tech can use to unlock it, or if you're unlucky and have IBM lappies, like at my work, you have to replace the motherboard. Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

I don't read Phree's post like that at all. Then again, 6 years in the sport and an Instructor rating have shown me that there definitely are people that have no business skydiving at all. Personally, I hope it never becomes "mainstream". Sky, Muff Bro, Rodriguez Bro, and Bastion of Purity and Innocence!™

Yup...learn to wring the piss out of the canopy you have now, and those skills will transfer over to your next canopy. Hell, I've got over 300 jumps on my Stiletto 190, and everytime I think about getting rid of it, I learn another nifty new trick. Another advantage is that I'm comfy with it, so it's mentally easier for me to try certain new things (flare turns, etc...) and to keep refining things I've been doing since I got it (flat turns, bringing down my flare height, etc...).
