Well, my tax dollars do pay for some assholes. They also pay for people who smoke too much, people who drink too much, people who drink and drive, people who chose their parents badly, people who have made some bad choices, and some people who just have bad dumb luck. You know what? It affects me too in my professional life. But I CHOSE my line of work, and to be an asset to the people I serve and to do my job well, I try my best to do it without being so judgmental about the people whose health they place in my care. Now, my colleagues....I'll go toe-to-toe with them when I think it's necessary or in the interest of the patients we serve. There are definitely people in the healthcare professions who get off on flaunting their superiority to their patients. See it all the time. They're a detriment to the health professions...a waste of energy, imho. I hope you're not one of them. That really should read: can protest something the employer doesn't agree with. Either way, if they are employed by me, then they're hired to do the job that I hired them to do. Work time isn't their personal time. If they saw fit to NOT work during work time, then I'd have to let them go. These are some of the things that might lead an employer to hire white men rather than an equally qualified minority. White men don't usually protest on their employers' time. Edited to add: on second thought, maybe they do. There are unions. So I don't know if that statement holds or not.... Well, it's easy to do that in any employment-at-will state, which is the majority of US states. But it's easier to do it, without consequence, to a white Protestant male under age 40. As I said above, defending against an employment discrimination lawsuit, even if you win, can be extremely expensive; you usually aren't covered by insurance for the claim (and thus you pay your own legal fees); and even if you (the employer) win, it's next to impossible to get a court to award you your legal fees back (in the US). I think I'd have to accept the risk. I do get your point, but I'd rather pay legal fees than have people working in my office who think that it's acceptable to leave me in a lurch so that they can protest. Good point in concept, but as a practical reality there are 2 difficulties with this approach: 1. He's in California, so those employees might have the ability to muster up quite a picket line of like-minded protestors against his office if they were really up to doing it. 2. Defending against not 1 but 2 race-based employment discrimination lawsuits, even if he wins both of them, would be incredibly expensive if he hires outside counsel (say in the range of about $30,000 per pop). Oh, and since alleged discrimination, generally being a willful act, and not mere negligence, is what's known in the insurance industry as an "intentional act", most insurance policies don't cover it, so he'd have to pay all those fees and expenses (as well as any settlement or judgment) out of his own pocket. Food for thought. That's unfortunate. I guess that's part of the beauty of living in rural Arkansas. I think I'd have to let these employees choose between working and not working. If they want a job, they come to work. I don't want to look angry and tired because I'm not therefore I'm getting Botox. So there! Yep. It's hard to look angry if you can't move your eyebrows. I have one friend who has found other, less subtle, ways to look angry despite all the botox. At least botox isn't permanent, and if you decide that you want to have facial expressions again, you just wait until it wears off. If you like the effect you can go back for more! Look at it this way, if you had to have heart surgery would you prefer a doctor who has been hired to fill a quota, or would you want the one who was the best person for the job? Not the same thing? Am I being silly... I know, let's have a list of jobs where it is acceptable to hire based on quotas... I agree with that. But the point that I think a lot of people are missing is that what happens far, far, far too often is that it's the man who is the most socially compatible with the hiring group that gets the job, rather than the most qualified person. When the most qualified person is a minority, that person is often over-looked in favor of the white guy in the izod.... That being said, I still don't agree with affirmative action because I think it results in the very same problem.... I think there is probably some middle ground in there that can result in more productive solutions. I do think that over time we're making progress. Here's an example of another, very annoying, side of the issue.... When I was preparing my application for medical school, a friend of mine, a black woman, was doing the same. Her grades weren't too hot because she really wasn't very diligent. She did have a child and was busy being a mom, but so did I. She said to me once (and as it played out she was correct), "I don't have to worry so much about my grades, because as an African American woman with a good vita, I'll get into medical school." Don't you think God carries a bit more weight than O.J.? I do. But some people don't, and those people's opinions are just as valid as the Believers'. A person can use a small amount of meth without becoming "impaired." The fact is, all drugs are ok in small amounts, but not ok when abused. Anyone who thinks that alcohol is better than these other drugs is - as I've already said - horribly misinformed. Drug abuse is drug abuse - alcohol is a drug - if you abuse alcohol then you are a drug abuser, no different that someone who abuses meth, coke, whatever... I just don't agree with that....at all. But we can't all expect to have the same perspective. I think that some drugs are more detrimental to society than others. I can't think that the idea of children sitting around the house with parents on heroin could be good in any way. That's just not comparable to children sitting around the house with parents having a glass of wine. I'm all for people doing whatever they want....as long as it doesn't hurt others. you already qualified that by saying that maybe some shouldn't be. Where do you draw the line though? Should MOA inhibitors be available OTC? Even though taking one with a swiss cheese sandwhich could kill you? No. I don't think MOAIs should be available OTC. Zyrtec probably should.
