There are so many things in this world that put children at risk. But ya' can't raise 'em in a bubble. Educating children about how to be safe when there are hazards in their world (whether that's learning gun safety, learning traffic rules for when they ride a bicycle, teaching them how to swim, or teaching them that strangers sometimes try to "trick" them), will go a lot further in their raising than teaching them to stay away from things that are potentially hazardous. In my experience...and of course this is with examples of middle class folks...both parents usually choose to work because their work is fulfilling to them. Working doesn't mean their families are less important, that they are uninvolved, or that they are working in order to have bigger and better (though with 2 incomes they probably do have more). You might have a correlation with kids who aren't good swimmers having easy access to a pool when nobody's watching.... I think the same prob'ly holds true for guns. I bet you see the problems when you have 1) kids who haven't been taught how to handle a gun safely (or to leave them alone) 2) in a home with unsecured guns while they're 3) not being watched. linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. That is some skewed thinking right there. You're categorizing people who choose to work outside the home as uninvolved parents???? Not raising their kids??? That's some powerful blindness creeping in. Not working outside the home doesn't make one an involved or effective parent either. In fact, I think a lot of parents who don't work are just lazy....and that laziness bleeds over into their parenting. We just finished a long game of monopoly. My son IS the Slum Lord. Really. The world has changed, but that doesn't preclude one from being a parent. Before Monopoly we cooked ribs on the grill and cleaned red gatorade (partially) out of the carpet. AND we chased the cat down, cornered him, and caught him out of the bamboo forest next to our house. Since our right wing detractors like to point out that 16 is the age of consent in DC....I STILL have a problem with a 52 year old man propositioning a 16 year old boy... I wonder how these same right wingers would react if it was THEIR SON.... Of course there's a problem with it. It's just not a problem that will land one in jail, and it's not pedophilia. 30 yr. old homosexuals[ I refuse to use the word gay to describe them] do not target 50 yr.old men. I think that most 30 y/o homosexuals probably date people close to their own ages. People who "target" other people are usually up to no good. I think you'll find a lot of women whose "personal experience" tells them that there are a lot of older heterosexual men who like to target teenage girls. I was thinking, driving home today, about the Slave Auctions our church youth group used to put on when I was a kid. We kids were the slaves, of course, and we were auctioned off to people in town for one weekend of labor. We had our slave auction every year. One year I painted Sara Beth Mays' baby room. Sara Beth is grown now with her own kids. I picked a lot of peas. I washed a bunch of cars and mowed several folks' lawns. And we raised a lot of money for one cause or another. Also, and this couldn't be proven without blatant honesty, that the largest number of pedophiles are homosexuals. That's really not true. In my years as a social worker at Arkansas Children's Hospital, I was involved in many, many child sexual abuse cases. I can only remember a handful in which the abuser was the same gender as the child. I doubt that the trends here are dramatically different than across the country. Edited to add: until we are honest with ourselves and realize that the correlation between being a white heterosexual male and pedophilia isn't coincidence, none of our children will be safe.... linz -- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. It would seem that the moral outrage liberals have exhibited doesn't always carry over to pedophilia as depicted on stage. Umm...that's silly. Do you really expect the same response to actions in a play that you expect to actions in real life???? Why do you only expect it from *liberals*? I think there are plenty of conservatives who are also outraged by real examples of pedophilia who aren't protesting this play too. At least I hope so. I would expect that most adults could tell the difference. That was my favorite place back in '84 and '85 when I lived at Perdido Key. Was so drunk on tequila there the night before I got married. And they used to have the very best boiled-in-beer shrimp to be found. It was such a little hole. Even though the place has changed dramatically, it'll always have a very, very, very special place in my heart.
