countries that don't allow hand guns in public and always havn't have less gun crimes due to less availability. I don't know whether that's true or not, but to say any difference is "due to less availability" is stretching it. The evidence about how safe ya' really are totin' or not totin' a gun isn't clear-cut, obviously. But when you KNOW that the folks who would be most likely to break into your home, or to attempt to harm you and yours otherwise, will likely be armed, there are a lot of people who *feel* safer having a gun themselves. And maybe they are. Given that gun crime by folks who generally obey the law is probably very, very low, I just can't see the logic behind taking their guns away, even if there's no clear benefit to having them other than a relative feeling of safety. I think time will tell what happens when we disarm law-abiding citizens and leave guns only in the hands of thugs. We'll always be able to find reports of isolated incidents that support both sides of this argument. The reports of people fending the bad guys off with an unexpected pistol at an opportune time carry more weight with some folks while others become more cautious when they hear stories like these. I ran into this homeless guy when I stopped in at our local airport to use the bathroom. Just couldn't hold it any longer. This guy, some might call him a bum (even to his face) told me all about the N-word. He had used it one night in a confrontation with our 1 black city police officer. Now I have problems with this cop too, but I refrain from calling him names. Well, this homeless man said he was arrested after calling this policeman a nigger. He went on to enlighten me about the *real* meaning of the word, and that to him it means a "sorry person." Said it doesn't matter what color your skin is, any sorry person can be called a nigger. Friends are a bit different situation, I agree on that point. PC feel-good bullshit aside - I think it's damned hypocritical to claim that a word is 'hurtful' when you're tossing it around 50 times a day in casual conversation. Wouldn't you agree? If I call a girlfriend a bitch 50 times a day, but she knows I love her, it's different if some asshole guy calls her a bitch 50 times a day but tells her he loves her. There's a difference. When I read his post I thought the same thing. Then I thought about issues that I've developed some pretty strong opinions on....abortion for instance. I believe that abortion is wrong. Don't like it one bit. But I also believe in a woman's right to make the choice for herself. My belief in her choice is stronger than my belief that abortion is wrong....or maybe it's that even though I believe abortion is wrong, I see that her thoughts about it are just as valid as mine, so politically, I'm pro-choice. Not sure that his thinking that children shouldn't grow up in a home "like that" would mean he'd want them to legally not have the right to have children. thus it is not the norm. Thus, no one should be subjected ti this kind of upbringing or the consequences that can result. That's an interesting thought process there. I'm certain that our situation (mine and my son's) is not the norm either. Wonder if it's okay for me to be raising him. They might just end up being good parents. I think that's probably what matters most, and I don't see what in this situation precludes them from being good parents. They may teach their daughter some important lessons about what's right and wrong....REALLY right and wrong. Maybe she'll even grow up realizing that what doesn't fit the norm can still be good. Ask yourself, would you want these types of parents; or would you even let said couple babysit your son/daughter? Since I don't know these folks, I can't answer that question. But I wouldn't exclude the possibility based on their having a child of their own. The kid is going to be confused throughout life to say the least. I don't find it all that confusing. Are you saying their child is going to be stupid? It's not that difficult to understand. I think these folks are no more likely or unlikely to be good parents than anyone else. What may tip the scale in their favor is that they obviously WANT this child. That's a good thing, imho, regardless of how the "birds and bees" talk goes. There's plenty stuff better than that that happened today. For instance, the kids cleaned up the back yard. He was a person who I didn't like too, but his death today hasn't helped our world even one little bit. Any damage he would cause has already been done. Condolences to those who loved him.
