Girl banned from wearing "purity" ring.
Nightingale replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
That's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that the purity pledge isn't the right way to go about educating kids about sex and making sure they wait until they're responsible and ready. Too many parents and programs just let the kid pledge and then are done with it. There's no follow-up, no extended education or conversation, and no information about how to prevent pregnancy and STDs should they choose to have sex. Parents hear "I promise I won't have sex..." and think that's the end of it. They forget that teenagers are constantly learning and reevaluating, and they need to continue to provide guidance and information. -

Really? I'd love to see that study (and specifically, who funded it). All my research says that those things don't work. "Researchers from Columbia University interviewed a group of 12- to 18-year-olds when they first took the pledge and again six years later. They found that 88 percent of teenagers who had pledged virginity until marriage ended up having premarital sex and that their rates of STD were identical to those of teenagers who had not signed the pledge. Most troubling of all, the Columbia study found that virginity pledgers were less likely to use condoms, less likely to seek out medical care for an STD and less likely even to know they'd contracted one. They proved more irresponsible than kids who took no pledge at all." -Tribune Media -

A lot of the kids that are asked to make those pledges do so in junior high, as pre-teens, so I'd hope they'd abstain for at least a few more years (I think the average age is 16). Also "pledgers were significantly less likely to use a condom during first sex" -Yale Abstinence Pledge Study, 2005 -

As a parent, that's fine if it helps the kid learn what's really important. Where else should kids learn their morals? Surveys say that most people who make abstinence pledges break them a few years later. I think what he's saying is that the kids are making an empty promise to satisfy their parents rather than from any personal desire to keep their word. It's just one of those things that most kids say to keep their parents happy and off their back. -
I wouldn't do a teddy bear deployment without permission from the dropzone, so everyone would know what was going on. =)

hmm... Dylan?

I want to make the rig myself. Thanks, tho.

We've done teddy bear deployments at Perris before, and of course, will follow anything they say about it (including "no", if they want to say no). Why do it? because it's fun. I wasn't planning on buying a cypres 2 new anyway, so there probably isn't any reason to return the cypres to the manufacturer.

The problem here is that then you get one group deciding what it's okay for another group to know. And honestly, in this age of technology, I can find out pretty much anything I want to know on the internet. Restricting what's in the library isn't going to accomplish much. We've already managed to create a black market for drugs and weapons. Do we really want to create a black market for information as well?

The job of a profiler is to get inside the mind of a criminal, figure out who he is, what he's thinking, and what he's going to do next. Research studying sexual predators and their methods would be very valuable. In addition, the research could be used by psychologists to attempt to diagnose and treat pedophiles. Again, I do not believe that information itself is positive or negative. It is how that information is used that is key.
-
I would hope that books like that would be available. I imagine that the information would be quite valuable to anyone profiling or studying pedophiles. The thing is, information lacks intent. It is a neutral tool. There is no good or bad information. It is how we use that information that gives it a positive or negative character, and that use reflects far more on the user than on the information itself.

They should always listen. They should not always obey. Listen means listen, not follow.

I'd recommend buying the Multistate review book by Finz. The questions are much closer to what is actually on the multistate. PMBR is an awesome review class, though, but I'd practice the Finz questions more. I used both books equally, and Finz was much more help (So I ended up using PMBR strategies on the Finz questions, which raised my score considerably).

Before the bar I kept having nightmares that I'd open the test book and all it would say is "explain the rule against perpetuities."

Donating books for a library to add to their inventory is pretty common. It's the job of a library to make books available, not to decide which books are appropriate for people to read. Special interest groups donate books all the time, and most of the time, the books are just added to the shelf. The Second Amendment Foundation actively encourages their members to do so. http://www.ulster.net/~jperz/saf02.htm.

Well, the local library here has a pretty extensive section of books on various religions, books in many languages, and cultural literature from pretty much anywhere, but then again, I'm in LA, and there's a ton of cultures here, so there's demand. So, yeah, pretty much anyone has a spot if they want it, and if the library doesn't have a book you want, they'll order it from another library.

Do 3 hours sleep make you feel weak or sick?
Nightingale replied to FlyinDawg's topic in The Bonfire
Less than 5 makes me feel both weak and sick. It's also a migraine trigger. Unfortunately, I'm doing it three nights a week because after work I have about five hours of homework. Get up at 5 am to go to work. Get home at 6 pm because traffic sucks at the hours my boss is requiring. Have dinner, play with cats. Do homework. Fall asleep sometime after midnight. Lucky for me, I only work tuesday-friday, so I only have to do this tuesday, wednesday, and thursday nights (sigh... and this friday night because I have traffic school on saturday.). -
You generally have to ask for them.

Or have him kick me in the balls for even thinking about it. Hehe... I don't think I'd ever get married without a prenup. It's a way of protecting the person I love from anything I might try to do to them financially should things not work out. Agreeing on stuff like that beforehand when you love each other is a LOT easier than agreeing on it after everybody's angry. Since 50% of marriages end in divorce, it's a coin-toss chance that a contingency plan may be required... hope for the best, and move on with your marriage knowing you've already planned for the worst. Marriage is a contract, and a prenup is just a vehicle to define the terms.

You probably won't get too sick. I usually ask for Vicoprofen (hydrocodone/ibuprofen(advil)) instead, because Vicodin (hydrocodone/tylenol) upsets my stomach, because tylenol upsets my stomach, and vicodin has a lot of tylenol in it.

What is your opinion of the Bonfire forum?
Nightingale replied to cocheese's topic in Speakers Corner
It's usually pretty frivolous, but it's a good place to go to get info about what to put on my Netflix list. -
No more or less appropriate than libraries carrying Playboy or Hustler or Anne Rice's Sleeping Beauty trilogy, and many libraries do.

You don't say where you live, but I'd look into city government. Pick your local big city (Mine is LA), and go to their website, and click on their personnel/HR/available jobs link. Big cities are always hiring clerks, typists, management assistants, etc... You get great health care, every national and state holiday paid, and usually a decent paycheck to go along with it.
