  1. It's been an interesting topic, that's for sure. I just hope it doesn't turn into the "I'm a Christian...and proud of it" thread all over again.
  2. Wow.... can I steal that for my next sig line? That is so true. Probably about half the people I've dated have been christian, and the other half a mix of everything else, but nobody I'd describe as a zealot or fanatic. I date people who can discuss things with me. I don't want someone who always agrees, because that would be boring, but I don't want someone who states absolutes and refuses to examine them either. I'm always willing to listen to a different opinion, and I'd like whoever I'm dating to grant me the same courtesy.
  3. I just insist on a paper ballot. I either vote absentee, or in the last election, just went to the polls and said I didn't want to use the machine, could I have a paper ballot please? The guy running the polls tried to talk me into using the machine, and I said something like "Remember what happened in Iowa?" and he just shut up and handed me the ballot. As I left, more people were asking for paper. The guy wasn't pleased.
  4. Awesome... so we'll have at least four! lol. I just realized the link in my sig line didn't work. It works now.
  5. Not necessarilly illegal at all. Where'd you come up with that? the child was in custody of the CPS. There was a history of abuse in the family. They weren't allowed to take the baby... The article wasn't clear on this... it said "CPS has custody", which I took to mean that CPS has custody at this time, but it didn't say whether CPS had custody at the time of the incident. The incident may have been what got CPS's attention, and if so, the doctors probably couldn't have stopped the guy from leaving with his kid if he wasn't happy with their treatment at the hospital.
  6. I put in the request to form the team. It's called "Skydivers", and I will post when the request goes through.
  7. I was going to do the AIDS Walk LA on October 21, and was wondering if anyone wanted to get together and form a team? The info is here: http://www.aidswalk.net/losangeles/index.html
  8. The death penalty isn't a deterrent because nobody thinks they're going to get caught, just like increased speeding fines don't deter speeders. What acts as the deterrent is police presence or another immediate threat.
  9. My mistake. I'm afrikaans. In afrikaans, a medical doctor is called a dokter, while someone who has their Phd is called a doktor. I'm not studying languages
  10. Many are self selecting, but there is more tangible incentive to self-identify as minority (scholarships, affirmative action, part of a group, etc...) than as white. There was a study done (I will try to track it down.... it was from my anthro class) that said that people with one white parent and one minority, if asked to pick a race, will choose that of the minority parent. The study, at least the part I read, didn't go into why... my guess is the factors above, as well as that minority features such as skin color and hair color tend to be more dominant.
  11. Well, an important thing to consider is that whites are having children with minorities, and those children are usually classified as minority, not white. It's a flaw in the way they look at the numbers. Yes, minorities are reproducing more and faster than whites, but the margin is probably not quite as great as studies want us to believe. However, I don't really see why people care about whether there's more people of other races.
  12. You could try going to your local drug store or orthodontist and buy a container of dental wax. They use it for the rough spots on braces, but it might help temporarily.
  13. Part of this is the way minorities are traditionally counted. It's called "hypodescent" and means that if someone has some minority blood (usually 1/8th or more), they're classified as minority. So, if your great-grandmother was mexican and everybody else in your family was white, you'd have been classified as mexican because of that 1/8th. While the policy isn't official anymore (in most states), it's influenced the way we classify ourselves, and also, there are benefits from claiming minority status, such as scholarships, affirmative action, etc.... In the last 20 years or so, we've had a lot more mixed race children born than before, and they're probably classified as minority on the census, even though they're actually mixed race.
  14. Well see that's your problem right there, a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of science. We can't prove a negative. Also, in scientific terms God, or religion, fulfills none of the criteria of a theory. It's not even a testable hypothesis. And theories don't turn into facts, either. I am amazed at how many people don't know the difference between a theory and a fact. Theories are not just fuzzy, uncertain ideas that are a step on the path towards becoming facts. A theory is not a fact, and a fact is not a theory. A fact is an observation, something that can be seen to be true or false with little or no interpretation. A theory is a conceptual framework that explains existing observations and predicts new ones. Theories explain facts. They do not become facts.
  15. If a god was actually looking out for you, you would not had broke your leg. A god did not place you where you landed. That was your screw up. Learn how to use the stearing lines. They work better than leaving fate up to a god. As for medical people being at the dz, not uncommon. If you are counting on a god to bail you out when you fuck up in this sport, you should consider playing checkers instead. I'm just frightened that she's going to medical school and doesn't know how to spell "doctor".
  16. Since the dawn of time, people were convinced the world was flat until it was proved otherwise a few centuries ago. The existence of an idea for a long time has no connection whatsoever to its accuracy. We started a war over weapons of mass destruction. The fact that we started a war over it has absolutely no influence over whether or not those weapons actually existed. Just because people are willing to fight over something (or claim that's what they're fighting for), that doesn't make that something real.
  17. Ugh. He needs to call his congressman, not the senator. There are only 2 senators per state, and a lot more congressmen, who are more accountable locally. I had an issue with social security, and my congressman took care of it quickly when the social security people wanted to sit on it. A "Congressional Inquiry" stamp on a file goes a long way.
  18. Teachers don't get paid for the summer, though (at least not in CA), so most teachers I know either have spouses with a second income, or find work subbing in year round schools or doing other things. Most people can't afford three months off without pay.
  19. I was answering your question of where the bible says if we fail to accept him, we burn in hell. Since heaven is where god is, and hell is where he isn't, it seems like John 14:6 was a good answer.
  20. That's pretty stupid. If someone's going to use a weapon, they need to be able to practice with it. A lack of appropriate training and practice is a recipe for disaster.
  21. What Bible verse says that? John 14:6?
  22. Anyone got an audio file of that? It was great!
  23. I hate what WalMart does to communities, and how they treat their employees, but I admit, I do shop there sometimes. The thing is, since they came in, everything else shut down, so what else can you do? I'd probably have to fly to Alaska to find a nice 'Mom & Pop' to buy from. I'll order online if I have the time to wait for a mail order. Otherwise, pretty much everything WalMart sells can be found elsewhere if you're willing to drive a bit. I guess if you're in a small town with not a lot nearby, going to WalMart might be a necessity sometimes.
