I just got a call that I have wanted for 35 years
Nightingale replied to Duckwater's topic in The Bonfire
That's a wonderful story. :) Personally, I was adopted at birth, and could really not care less if I ever meet my birth parents. I'll admit to curiosity, but I don't have the pressing need that a lot of adoptees have. That said, I have seen what some of my friends have gone through trying to find birth families/adopted children. There's a lot of pain and anguish involved. I don't want anyone to go through that on my account, so I've made myself very easy to find in five minutes on the internet if one has the right information, such as birthday and case number, which a birth parent would have. It's wonderful that your reunion is working out so well! I've heard of some going really badly. It's good that they wanted to meet you, and you're open to meeting them. Too many times, adoption is a dark family secret that either birth parents or adopted parents don't want known. -
Whats the best way to make some quick $$ in college?
Nightingale replied to Floats18's topic in The Bonfire
I made really good money for a college student. I went to the career office and got myself put on the list of tutors for local schoolchildren. Got paid $20-$25 an hour to help kids with homework. Sure beat the $5 an hour student worker jobs. Most schools keep a tutor list somewhere. You just have to ask around and have the patience to work with kids. -
I know Loyola and USC and CUSF here in southern california don't require previous work experience, just a good gpa and test score. Chapman offers the MBA/JD option. I've already got a master's, and find business extraordinarily boring (not the actual running of a business, but all that theory!), so I elected to just go for the JD. Business law holds no interest for me whatsoever, so I didn't think an MBA would do me much good. I'm looking into family law, elder law, or school law.

due to a time issue, I took the LSAT cold. I got a 157. Take a class if you can. I got a lot of the details about the classes from friends after the fact. Some of the strategies you'll learn there probably would've gotten me another 5-10 points. And yes, I still have time to jump, except during midterms and finals.

Just finish your project by the rules and get the degree. If you're in a time crunch, check with your professor/dean and ask about taking an incomplete to get a time extension for a semester. If you've already put 3 years in, just do what it takes to walk out the door with that piece of paper that says you've graduated. It'll help you in the long run. An example: A friend of mine at my last job left school before he got his degree, figuring he'd make more money if he just started work. Well, he and I did the exact same job. I got paid over $10,000 per year more, just because I had a degree. We were doing exactly the same thing, and honestly, he was probably a little better at it than I was. However, what it came down to is that I had a degree and he didn't, and it was reflected in our paychecks.

Questions about purchasing 1st gear
Nightingale replied to GratefulDreamer's topic in Gear and Rigging
Most of the newbies I know are flying spectres, sabre2s, silhouettes, and pilots. Personally, I love my silhouette. Talk to your instructors about what kind and size of canopy is right for you. -
Debt resolution firms are usually kinda shady. You'd probably be better off hiring a tax lawyer.

ARAB / ISLAMIC vs JEWISH NOBEL WINNERS

You said exactly what I was thinking. It's probably not so much a religious thing, as implied in the original post, but an economic thing. -
Southern california is not built around public transportation. Unless you want to spend your entire day commuting, rent a car. Fun stuff to do: BodyWorlds at the Science Center in Los Angeles Aquarium of the Pacific Ice Dogs Hockey Game (minor league...the mascot skates better than the players) Venice Beach (only on weekends during the day) 3rd Street Promenade (near venice, good place to go to on weekend nights) Disneyland Knotts Berry Farm Universal Studios Sea World Wild Animal Park Medieval Times (Medieval dinner and joust) Skydiving at Perris or Elsinore Wind Tunnel That's all I can think of at the moment.

I would have to see what the leaflets said, exactly, before forming an opinion on them or the UN's actions.

Failing to neuter a pet can actually cause physical and psychological problems for the pet if not allowed to breed. From a pamphlet in my vet's office (who will perform spay/neuter, but never declawing): "Forced abstinence should only be chosen as a short term solution. Intact tomcats are compelled by physiological changes to mate. Forcing them not to mate causes them undue stress and discomfort. The eggs of an intact female who is not permitted to mate, and therefore can not ovulate, become encysted in her ovaries, which may lead to cancerous tumours. Unlike declawing, any form of sterilization provides a net benefit for the feline species' and is therefore justifiable.... Ideal age for Female Spaying is 4-6 Months. Cats have a less than 1% chance of developing feline breast cancerif spayed before the first heat cycle. If spayed after one heat cycle, this risk increases to 8%, and after two heat cycles, to 26%. Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancer. Ideal age for Male Neutering is 4-6 months. Neutering eliminates the risk of testicular cancer and greatly reduces the risk of prostate cancer. It reduces the risk of perianal tumors and eliminates the risk of feline sexually transmitted diseases." -
it says "incentive to use a fitness center". Many community centers/homeowners associations provide fitness centers free to their community. The WEYCO press release doesn't say whether home fitness centers or community ones would qualify for their incentive pay, but they might.

I think pets would choose to be warm and safe and loved and fed and never having to worry about just surviving like strays have to, over keeping their reproductive abilities. Personally, I'd never, ever get my cats declawed. I used to volunteer at a shelter, and I saw so very many kitties with major problems from infection to claws that have grown back twisted and mangled. It was a no-kill shelter, so the kitties received medical care and were rehomed, but seeing the damage declawing operations do to cats is heartbreaking. In most cases, cats get declawed simply because the owner doesn't take the time to train the cat about where it is appropriate to scratch. If the cat can't be trained, there is always softpaws, which are little vinyl caps that glue over the claw so the cats can't scratch. They're easy for the owner to put on, and a groomer will do it for about $10. Much easier and cheaper than surgery. Surgery involves the feline equivalent of chopping your fingers off at the knuckle near the end of the finger. -
I wouldn't have diverted bombs to auschwitz. simply because if that camp was inaccessible, the trains would have been re-routed to other camps. Auschwitz was not the only camp, just the most well known. Best way to help was to end the war as fast as possible.

I solved the issue by buying a mac. I have a legit copy of windows on my home pc and my laptop, and I've found the updates cause more problems than they solve.

Perris and Elsinore both give go-arounds, no problem. Sure, if someone's really f-ing up and taking minutes to exit or just being a moron or asshole, someone'll talk to them, but if the spot just ends up long due to a plane full of solos or lots of small groups, a go around is no big deal. The green light goes out, you sit down, the plane turns, green light goes back on, you jump.

New Skydiver-obsessed and wanting to get certified
Nightingale replied to skymom2's topic in Safety and Training
I did level 5,6 and 7 all in one day. Three levels was about my limit. I've seen people start AFF on a saturday morning and finish that monday afternoon. You can go as slow or as fast as you want, as long as you're keeping your own learning curve in mind. Don't try to cram too many levels into one day, because you can get tired and lose your focus. I did better on the levels I did as the second jump of the day, because I wasn't nearly as nervous as I was on the first jump of the day. Since I'd already done it once that day, it was easier to get past the nerves and do it again. -
the only reason he got the job in the first place is that his sister in law was the district manager. otherwise there's no way in hell. He had no experience in either management or leasing.

try rats instead of mice. rats are just as cute, but much, much smarter. you can train them and they're very social. mice and hamsters are more solitary critters and after a while can get aggressive when you want to socialice, plus, they're brick stupid. I've got two rats, and they're wonderful. plus, my cats are scared to death of them!

look for a new job. find one. leave your current job on your own terms, before you're asked to quit, because employers ask about that on applications. you don't like your job. find a new one. I had a total asshole of a boss two jobs ago. He would take away our bonus on a lease if we misspelled one single word or forgot a comma. He once took away a $300 bonus from me because I misspelled a resident's last name on an internal office document (the resident wouldn't ever see this, but if he did, he'd understand...his last name was Armenian and 16 letters long!) This guy was such a prick that out of a staff of 13, within a month, 10 had quit because of intolerable working conditions. Complaining to the district manager didn't help. He was her brother in law. So, I started quietly looking for a new job. I found one and gave the boss notice. That day, he went out of his way to be a total prick. Way out of his way. So, I called my new job, and asked if I could start the following day instead of in two weeks. They said "sure! can't wait to have you." so, I didn't say anything to the boss until closing, then I handed him my keys and told him that it was my last day, shook his hand and thanked him for the experience. He actually had the gall to ask why I was leaving. I just said "a $12,000 pay raise." which was the truth... partly. I was well aware that I was screwing him over by leaving him very shorthanded. I was the best leasing agent he had and he knew it. There was no way he didn't know it, because that month I'd had 27 leases and the next closest leasing agent had 3. and this was a usual pattern. So, I got my revenge by screwing him over, because without me there was no way in hell he was going to meet his quota, and he knew it. If he didn't meet his quota, the district manager couldn't help him, because the general manager was going to come down on him. When I last heard about him, he'd been fired and was back in the navy (enlisted). He always talked about how much he hated the navy. And I walked away to a $12,000 pay raise. Karma...gotta love it.
